Over the weekend I wanted to catch up on some of the Oscar nominees I'd missed, and watched Elvis and The Banshees of Inisherin. They combined for 0 wins. (I did really enjoy Banshees though, so it was hardly a waste of time)

Yeah but that was all booked pre-Oscars and she's not even a lead there. She's probably going to command more work as a lead actress is what I was going at. American Born Chinese was filmed last year and the Oscar win will probably help sell the show more even though she's only a supporting character there as well.

Didn't he just die? I thought the memoriam is for people who died in the prior year? So he wouldn't make 2022's list.

Though I wouldn't be surprised if he gets snubbed on next year's show.

They made a Robert Blake In Memorium joke on the telecast. They couldn’t include him.

Was Tom Sizemore in the In Memoriam? If so, I missed must have missed it.

He wasn't. Neither was Bert I. Gordon, who while being the literal opposite of an Academy Award filmmaker, he was synonymous with 50s sci-fi cinema

They even left out Anne Heche who went out in a speeding car crash that erupted into an inferno that burned down a house. Not to mention she was famously linked to Ellen Degeneres who hosted the Oscars. How do you miss that? I swear they have the biggest idiots working on this show.

The yearly complaints about the in memoriam segment are so tiresome. They should just ditch the segment. SAG did it far better anyway.

They included Raquel Welch, who died about a month ago. Blake and Sizemore were very recent, though. I could see them including Sizemore next year. I doubt they'll acknowledge Blake.

Well, she was wearing nothing. Maybe he was distracted (?) Seriously, her outfit consisted of granny panties with a see through skirt, a bra, and a cape. But yes, he was rather rude and clearly wanted to be anywhere else. So why the hell did he walk up to talk to her?

I don't know why they don't just schedule it to run for three and a half hours. They always schedule if for 7:00-10:00 PM CST, and it always runs over a half an hour.

Or is there a fear that if they give it that extra half hour, it will naturally expand even more?

That was a hell of a good show. Of course it helps if you love EEAAO like I have for almost a year.

Re: The 95th Academy Awards --> 2023 Oscar Awards Show Discussion

As I went to bed last night, I couldn't help but think there was something missing from a mostly solid show. Then I realized that it was the complete lack of star power. Off the top of my head, and these are just actors, we were missing:

Affleck
Damon
Denzel
Bradley Cooper
Pitt
Leo
Adam Driver
Chalamet
Clooney
Joaquin
Jackman

Cruise skipping the ceremony (while not surprising) left a big hole. And was Tom Hanks there? If he was, I don't remember seeing him. Even the ones that were there fell a little flat for me. The Rock (and his peach tux) was there and gone in the first few minutes. Jonathan Majors is about to take over Hollywood, but he seemed oddly uncomfortable in his bit with MBJ. Even the Brendan Fraser win, which should have been a nice moment, felt off because he looked like he was having a stroke on stage.

Fraser is a strange man, gets more obvious as the years go on.

I don't think Joaquin Phoenix unless he is in contention for an award is the guy who loves attending awards shows.

He said in interviews in the past it was silly to give awards for art and saying how once piece of art is that much better than another.

Maybe Netflix can flex its muscles now that it won Oscars for best international film Al Quiet on Western Front and Pinocchio for Animated feature and they can use those wins in their ads to boost subscriptions unless All Quiet losing best picture cancels out the wins they got?

I noticed the lack of Star power last night as well. I heard Cruise was off filming a movie so that understandable. Tom Hanks was noticeably absent considering Elvis was nominated for so many awards.

I suppose when you’ve got 16 first time nominees and the dominating film of the year is the Little Indie That Could, you’re not going to draw the biggest, most established stars.

I hadn't seen a reunion photo with Ke Huy Quan and Kate Capshaw until last night. It seems like she didn't attend any of the previous award events with Spielberg until the Oscars.
