I don't know. Not sure why Gunn would use Angie as the villain when he could use Brainiac, a legacy Superman antagonist who has yet to appear on film.

Plus it still seems kind of weird to think of Angie running around the DC Universe apart from The Authority. And, on top of that, having The Authority integrated into the DC Universe still seems weird.

Can someone provide a quick "For Dummies" explanation of how The Authority joined the larger DC Universe? Was there an event that brought them over or have they now "always" been there?

I really find it puzzling that this well known Superman villain has yet to appear in a film.

Brainiac was, at one point, supposed to be in Superman III but apparently they couldn't afford both him and Richard Pryor, so Brainiac was written out of it.

After Jim Lee sold Wildstorm to DC, I remember the Wildstorm Universe remained a separate entity from the DC Universe proper, and I think they finally integrated the Wildstorm characters into the DC Universe with "Flashpoint" and "New 52."

Sort of like how they used "Crisis on Infinite Earths" to integrate the Captain Marvel/Shazam and the Charlton (Captain Atom, Blue Beetle, Question, etc) characters into the DC Universe.

The reticence about Brainiac showing up in the films has always been about one thing for WB - the fear of runaway expenses when filming what is likely a pure CGI creature. That's why they've always nixed Brainiac before and resorted to "human" villains like Lex and Zod every single time. Remember how they threw up their hands and gave us a disastrous gassy cloud Parallex in Green Lantern? It's also why we'll likely never get a Superman movie set in space even though that is a huge chunk of his popularity in the comics.

It didn't help Brainiac's case when Ultron didn't go over that well for Marvel in Avengers 2.

Right. In the New 52 reboot, Martian Manhunter was part of Stormwatch, Grifter had a book in the new DC universe and Zealot was supposed to play an important part in whatever was going on with the rebooted universe (not sure if that ever came to fruition). This was pretty much met with a collective shrug from the audience until Warren Ellis started a separate continuity Wildstorm book, but I'm not sure that did anything either.

Not sure if it was a rumor or not but supposedly this movie is based on (potential spoilers)
Spoiler:
the comic What's So Funny About Truth, Justice, and the American Way, which was also adapted into a direct to video cartoon Superman vs. the Elite. The Elite were basically Authority stand ins since DC didn't have the rights to the Authority, so the thinking was they would use the actual Authority this time

Brainiac was meant to be the villain at the end of Superman III, but we know what happened instead.

The Wrap is reporting that Jonathan Kent has been cast. I'm not familiar with him and IMDB shows that most of his recent stuff is low budget movies and TV.

It's an interesting choice. I knew who he was. He's been on The Walking Dead , Deadwood, and Stranger Things.

Wasn't he the Priest in the Liquor Store from Constantine? He's been in a tons of stuff.

I don’t understand the point of that drawing next to the photo of the actor?

To show really dumb people who the comic version is?

Would it be better if they showed John Schneider or Kevin Costner instead?

Okay maybe but that’s not even the typical look of him in the comics.
Its just a random comic book drawing of an older guy.
So like I said including the drawing of a comic book random older guy is an odd inclusion by that twitter account

I always remember him in Highlander and Beautiful Girls.

I recognize the actor's face, couldn't name him to save my life. Tells me Superman's dad doesn't play a huge role in the story.

I've known him ever since Jacob's Ladder, but especially after James Mangold's first film Heavy where he was the lead

Pretty good actor, but his eyes make me want to puke. They constantly move around. I know he has some kind of condition, but lazy eyes, and eyes that bounce around make me queasy.

Yeah, he often plays kind of creepy or shifty characters. Seems an odd choice to play Pa Kent.

I thought he was solid in that one-man show IDENTITY in 2003. ;)

Yeah, he's been in about everything except for Star Trek and Star Wars somehow.

Natural Born Killers, JFK, Wild at Heart... and he was the plot twist in Identity...

He's one of those character actors who you instantly recognize, either by name of face, as having been in something else but you can't quite remember what.

But he doesn't really strike me as being very Jonathan Kent-y.

Yeah, he's been around in various roles for a while - I think I first became aware of him in the show Alias. Indeed seems an odd choice for Pa Kent.
