The Dark Tower movie was acutally more a bad copy of Last Action Hero, than an adaptation of the books. The lengths was probably a decision made in the post production, when they realized they had at botched the adaptation and it was cut down to a passable action fantasy movie. They should have changed the names of the characters and just call it Guns and Secrets or something generic.

Re: Canceled movies you really wanted to see?

Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World sequel(s) - great movie, well received, part of a trilogy (and more) of books so had source material, even just ended abruptly like there was far more story to tell. Lot of false started sequels and even a prequel that may be currently in development?

Pixar
1906
- Pixar's live action flick in conjunction with WB with Brad Bird attached to direct
Newt - Pixar's version of Rio but morphed in to Inside Out so that's a plus

GDT's version of Haunted Mansion - always rumored, never materialized.

Spielberg's Halo - although with the mediocre TV show out it's kind of killed my curiosity for it. Although I am curious if Halo would be a property better suited to the movie format then a long drawn out TV show.

Legend of Zelda - Netflix show (does that count?) Nintendo freaked when it leaked out they were working on it and pulled the plug.

Metroid - sometimes rumored, never really stuck

Re: Canceled movies you really wanted to see?

Like Allegiant there are a couple more movies that come to mind, where there was definitely a sequel in the minds of the creators, so they ended on a cliffhanger or teased a sequel
- Jumper
- Cirque du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant
- Alita: Battle Angel
- Hellboy 2
- The Mummy (2017)

Not all of those were good, but it ruins the re-watch value for me a lot. I'm not sure if I would have watched Dune: Part One ever again, if it had just ended there.

On Her Majesty's Secret Service
Yes, the movie got made. And never was it ever not going to be made. But it got delayed twice and can't help wonder about the movie that would have been made had it not been delayed. The version we got is about my all time favorite movie but would love to have seen the Connery version.

First it was going to follow Goldfinger. The original UK release had James Bond Will Return in OHMSS in end credits. The Thunderball lawsuit settled and they went with Thunderball instead to get it made while they had the chance. When Goldfinger was released in the U.S. and internationally three months later, end credit was changed to Thunderball.

Then OHMSS was to follow Thunderball. End credits of Thunderball originally had James Bond Will Return in OHMSS. The weather wouldn't cooperate for filming so OHMSS got bumped again. They edited all the Thunderball prints, removing the frames that have OHMSS in end credits. Ever since the end credits has James Bond Will Return, then a jump in film because of the missing frames.

Yes, this was real. Charles Bronson was supposed to play Lee Marvin's part. But, this version was canceled and re-developed with Marvin.

And Chuck Norris was originally cast as the lead of American Ninja, but dropped out. And the script was re-worked with Michael Dudikoff

Not so much cancelled, but never really announced...

The third film in the intended Danny Embling trilogy, by John Duigan. The Year My Voice Broke, Flirting, and ?

Would also love to see 28 Months Later, and I'm not writing it off, yet.

I don’t know if even in the works at any point, but I think there was talk. I would have loved to see a prequel or sequel to Wanted.

Re: Canceled movies you really wanted to see?

James Cameron’s Spider-Man.

James Cameron’s Jurassic Park (lost the book rights to Spielberg mere days after they were up for grabs).

Tim Burton’s Superman Lives

David Lynch’s Return of the Jedi (was preoccupied with Dune at the time.)

David Fincher’s Rendezvous With Rama

Denis Villeneuve’s Blade Runner 2049 Sequel (at least we’re getting a show, 2099).

John Carpenter’s Escape from Earth.

Luc Besson’s The Fifth Element: Mr. Shadow

Rama wasn't a particularly deep book, so it'd be fun to see what Fincher would do with it. The Escape From... movies were great. The super-campy sequel might be my favorite of the two.

I still would have loved to have seen Aronofsky's The Wolverine.

The 1980's Silver Surfer movie.

https://screencrush.com/silver-surfer-concept-art/

I remember seeing this mentioned once in Starlog or some sci-fi magazine, but of course it was never made.

Re: Canceled movies you really wanted to see?

^ Jim Steranko's Mediascene Prevue magazine (I think it was still a tabloid newspaper style at the time) had a big cover story on it in 1980.

Revenge Of The Jedi- Character sacrifices, pyrrhic victories, a bittersweet ending... the story that was intended to close out the middle trilogy, when Gary Kurtz was still involved with Lucasfilm.

John Hancock's version of Jaws 2.

Re: Canceled movies you really wanted to see?

The latest issue of the A24 zine is titled "Never Coming To a Theater Near You"
Guest edited by Jon Dieringer of Screen Slate, Issue 21 investigates a selection of film advertisements published in trade magazines from the late '70s through the early '90s that were never actually made. From David Cronenberg's Frankenstein and Rainer Werner Fassbinder's Cocaine to mysterious titles like SlayRide and Fetus®, there's a bizarre backstory or evidence-based speculation to go along with each ad that never came to be.

Featuring an essay from filmmaker Owen Kline and a conversation with genre film legend William Lustig, Never Coming to a Theater Near You offers a glimpse into an alternate film history we can only imagine.

Re: Canceled movies you really wanted to see?

What about movies that were changed because a lead was signed and insisted on rewrites? I'd love to see the original concepts for Terminator: Salvation and Russell Crowe's Robin Hood.

Re: Canceled movies you really wanted to see?

Maybe not exactly a "cancelled" movie, but I recently watched September, and reading about it afterwards, discovered Woody Allen originally shot and edited the movie with Sam Shepard, Charles Durning and Maureen O'Sullivan, didn't like it, and redid the film with Sam Waterson, Denholm Elliot, and Elaine Stritch. I liked the movie quite a bit, and the academic in me would enjoy seeing the prototype version of the film.

Re: Canceled movies you really wanted to see?

That Girls Gone Wild movie from MGM announced a few years ago never happened.

Airplane III was teased at the end of Airplane II, might have been a joke.

Similarly Dr. Detroit II: The Wrath of Mom was teased at the end of that movie.

Ridley Scott's "I Am Legend" with Arnold in the lead. Instead we got that abomination with Will Smith. They even spent twice as much on the Will Smith version, because the Ridley Scott one was budgeted at just under 90 million or so.

As much as I liked the "His Dark Materials" TV series, I really wanted to see the sequels to "The Golden Compass" with Nicole Kidman and Daniel Craig. I loved that film.

Agreed, it's still one of my favorite King (er, Bachman) books, I've read it at least a half dozen times since I was a teenager. But if it got made, they would probably need to age up the characters, considering the era we live in these days with kids being killed in school shootings, etc. (but damn, that would make a great fucking grim, dark movie!) The same reason why an adapation of King's Rage ain't never gonna happen.

Re: Canceled movies you really wanted to see?

Conan O'Brien is currently doing a podcast series where he, Dana Carvey, Kevin Nealon, and Robert Smigel read selections from their unproduced 1991 screenplay for the SNL movie musical (!) Hans and Franz: The Girlyman Dilemma. They also tell stories about writing it, meeting with Arnold, etc. It's only two episodes in so far, but I am cracking up. SNL movies are hit or miss - mostly the latter - but I would've loved to have seen this come into fruition. It sounds very, very silly.

I was really looking forward to Timothy Dalton's third Bond movie.

That cancellation really bummed me out. Still does.

David Lynch's Return Of The Jedi would have been a trip. You would find out that Luke and Lea are the same person instead of brother and sister.

David Cronenberg's TOTAL RECALL. (early-mid '80s?)
