There was a teaser before the FNAF movie last weekend and it seemed to get a decent reaction from the crowd, and it looked really good on the big screen.

Been reading a couple of early reviews of this. There’s some very interesting touches in it: the human “hero” is a kamikaze pilot (shades of Yamasaki’s ETERNAL ZERO from 2013) who faked his way out of his duty, and this being set in immediate postwar Japan means the country has an ineffectual government and no military infrastructure remaining to fight the monster, and gets no help from the U.S., which doesn’t want to provoke the Soviet Union. If this turns out to be any good, then Yamazaki was indeed a long-overdue choice, and it might be interesting to see if he gets another shot.

Back when I visited Japan a lot more compared to now, I'd try to time my visits around when a new Godzilla movie was playing (back when there was one released every year for awhile). I saw a handful of them over there, the bad thing was there were no English subtitles, but one cool thing was that the lobby sold a bunch of merch like film programs, souvenirs and theater exclusive Godzilla toys (which I stocked up on and later flipped on ebay
). I miss those days. The new trailer looks great, glad I'll be able to see it in a theater here.

Oh, hot damn! It is actually playing here in IMAX on the 29th! I don't usually pre-purchase tickets, but I picked up the first ticket to the 8:00 showing!

If I had written it, I would have had the monster appear while the war was still in progress and the U.S. was preparing to drop the A-bomb. When Gojira begins its rampage of destruction, Japan thinks it's a secret U.S. weapon. President Truman cancels the order to nuke Hiroshima and opts to wait it out. When G gets done with Japan, it heads to American-held territory on Okinawa or Iwo Jima and only then does the U.S. drop the bomb--directly on Gojira!--effectively ending the threat. Then Japan surrenders, amidst criticism that the U.S. allowed Gojira to complete his destruction of Japan before intervening. Had they dropped the bomb sooner, even at the loss of a Japanese city, some parts of Japan would have been saved.

I'm excited to see this on Wednesday. I don't think these early screenings are giving anything away like a poster or something. Especially since this isn't a US studio movie.

"The Godzilla series had lost that kind of taste. I think that back in the '70s Godzilla movies had more power and speed. He was very fast and he was very strong. So in my Godzilla, you know, less dialogue and more action. That’s more fun than watching people discuss what we should do about Godzilla. As a Godzilla fan I want to see Godzilla punching and kicking, beating up all the other monsters instead of somebody talking again, you know, just discussing. Showing the monsters in order to understand their story and why they end up like this was a crucial choice for this film. That's what I wanted to do is to revive that, but not in the same way, I have to update. This is the updated version of '60 & 70s, crazy, monster movies."
As mentioned before, I still think the new director seems to be a better match for the material based on his prior work, and the technology available to filmmakers today is beyond capable of making this all feel properly realistic. His previous movies have their talky moments (which Kitamura probably hates), but not in the same way that many later Godzilla movies (including SHIN) did, with endless scenes of bureaucrats debating stuff when we already know how it's gonna play out anyway. I'd imagine this new one will have that too, but hopefully they find the right balance.

I was lucky to see SHIN GODZILLA and FINAL WARS in theatrical screenings in NYC packed with G fans. (SHIN GODZILLA twice!) The films probably don't play as well at home. (I still haven't watched my discs of either film.)
At yesterday's post-Thanksgiving get-together with my daughter and nephews and their families we watched GODZILLA VS. SPACE GODZILLA (1994), my 11-year-old great-nephew's choice.

Both films were shit. Not because of changes to G-Lore, but because they were just shit films.
that said, i can accept the changes for Shin Godzilla because it was more or less a reboot. So yes, it DOES change the essence.
Final Wars was going off of G-History, so not sure that even needed to be mentioned.

I still haven't managed to catch Shin Godzilla, though it was one I really wanted to see. I missed out on the BluRay for $10 (or less) a few times, and then simply forgot about it. Is it streaming anywhere?
