4K UHD getting released on May 1 in Japan (no English subtitles). It looks like Godzilla Minus Color edition is Blu-ray only.

$80 USD for that set. That will make most here gulp.

Well, at least we know bonus content exists and there is a 4K master. Now it just needs subtitles for the international market.

and that is almost 6 months after it came out in Japan. Other markets will probably be a lot longer.

My hope is that this was such a buzzy hit that they might actually move a little faster to capitalize on that as much as possible.

It's $73 over at CD Japan... until you add shipping.

Now can someone convince Arrow to scoop up the rights to the movie and all the bonus material (as well as somehow comission A 4K master for Minus Color)?

GODZILLA MINUS ONE | Talk with Director Takashi Yamazaki

To commemorate GODZILLA MINUS ONE, a film about the power of home in the face of despair, which was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Visual Effects, guests were invited to a special talk event with the renowned director, screenwriter & VFX visionary, Takashi Yamazaki.

Director Yamazaki flew in from Japan for this occasion to share the backstories of his dramatic storytelling, filmmaking, and process of deploying innovative techniques to create unique visual effects that turned imagination to cinematic reality. During this talk event, which was moderated by Peter France (@PeterFrance @CorridorCrew), an animator and VFX artist from Los Angeles, California, guests gained unique insights into the VFX production process employed in Japan for this is particular film, where a nimble team and a modest budget delivered a world-class screening experience through Director Yamazaki's directorial magic.

For those of you waiting and waiting for a digital or disc release of Minus One, you might not get one in 2024.

Legendary has exclusivity to the Godzilla character for this year since they have a movie coming out this month. That's why they forced Minus One to leave theaters by February 1st even though it was still making money.

They don't say it explicitly in the article that it sounds like it also pertains to home video in which Legendary has an exclusive window to Godzilla.

I know this screws those who simply don't go to theaters and you've missed out on a really great movie. Possibly until 2025?

I actually kind of like this uncertainty. Takes me back to the old days when I missed my chance and it will be a long time before I see it. When I do, Iíll be excited and it wonít just be something on a checklist.

That's upsetting for those who didn't see it and those, like me, who want to see it again.

On a historical note, when I was a kid I used to have to wait till highly anticipated movies finally came to neighborhood theaters. I remember IT'S A MAD, MAD, MAD, MAD WORLD opening in November 1963 and I was so anxious to see it but I had to wait till it finished its successful Broadway run and finally came to my neighborhood theater in February 1965. And if you missed something in a theater you had to wait till it came on broadcast TV, sometime years later. It was called delayed gratification.

I like your attitude.

I didnít see this in theaters and was eagerly anticipating watching it on Blu-ray but I guess Iíll just wait a bit longer.

It sucks that an actually decent Godzilla movie is getting shoved aside for, most likely, a loud, chaotic, shitfest in Legendaryís next Godzilla movie.

I figured the delay came down to Toho being squirrelly, not Legendary being dicks.

re: Godzilla Minus One (2023, D: Yamazaki)

apparently Toho’s president was against submitting Godzilla Minus One for an Academy Award because they were sure it had absolutely no chance of winning, and was only convinced to do it because some very insistent person was like, "cmon, the submission fee’s only $200"🇯🇵

The YouTube (?) video linked by WTK ó which I assume was a clip of their win? ó doesnít seem to work for those of us outside of the U.S., so hopefully this one will:

They should have planned their acceptance speech better by having a designated English speaker read it or having Yamazaki read it in Japanese with an interpreter on hand. As it stands, no one understood it on either side of the Pacific. Toho Pictures really should have done adequate preparation. A historic win is botched.

That lenticular poster is really tempting... esp as a flipper.

I hear you, but the chaos regarding the Godzilla's team award speech is just one in a long line of Oscar acceptance speeches that were not well thought out. The Oscar is now and forever connected to the legendary Kaiju that is Godzilla.

I wonder if Legendary is going to be able to use big G's Oscar win in the marketing for Godzilla x Kong.

re: Godzilla Minus One (2023, D: Yamazaki)

My career began 40 years ago, after the shock of seeing Star Wars and Close Encounters of the 3rd Kind.

To someone so far from Hollywood, even the possibility of standing on this stage seemed out of reach.

The moment we were nominated, we felt like Rocky Balboa — welcomed into the ring as equals by our biggest rivals, which was already a miracle.

But here we stand.

To all the VFX artists outside Hollywood, Hollywood was listening, and this award is proof that everyone has a chance.

Finally, on behalf of the cast and crew of Godzilla Minus One, I want to tell our producer, Shuji Abe, who we’ve lost too soon…

We did it! Thank you so much!!

While I had to, and was glad to listen, closely, I feel like I caught essentially all of that.

Our whole family cheered when they won!

I was really rooting for Godzilla and was thrilled to see it win.

I have a bunch of Japanese Godzilla toys I've been meaning to sell on ebay for some time, guess I should strike now while the iron is hot.
