It's probably going to tie in with Cobra Kai. The press release said "The return of the original Karate Kid franchise"

I'm guessing Hurwitz, Schlossberg and Heald pitched something.

Yes!! Bring on the legacy sequels! This is a no brainer - 40th anniversary, everyone still looks great, momentum from a successful show. Now, I do hope that this feels more like a film and less like Cobra Kai: The Movie, that'd be my only reservation.

I guess I donít really see much point in a new film when Cobra Kai has had five seasons and is still going.

Still waiting for the fight between Daniel and Julie about who Mr Miyagi loved more.

Bad idea, nobody is going to pay to see this. If the series was never made could make money with the return of Larusso, Johnny, Kreese,Chozen, Barnes, etc. However, probably for the best that they went the TV route as they could give all the characters more depth.

Is the movie perhaps meant close out the series (and possibly leave the door open to continue the franchise with just the kids)? I would actually like a big screen sendoff to all the legacy characters.

None of the Cobra Kai creators have confirmed any involvement with this on their Twitter accounts yet. It’s most likely that deals are still being worked out on who will take this on.

Iím hopeful with a movie, they can do something bigger in scale, for example having the entire main cast go to Japan (and not just a quick trip for Daniel).

In fact, seeing Johnny in Japan and reacting to the culture would be worth the price of admission.

Iíve always preferred when a franchise goes the TV series route, instead of a film. I want 8-10 hours of content, not a 2 hour film.

I saw an article on some (not particularly credible) website a month ago about another Karate Kid being in the works ... it didn't mention anything about the Cobra Kai creators being involved. It credited someone else. It doesn't seem like this has anything to do with Cobra Kai. The plot is about a kid who is the teacher now. And it once again is Kung Fu, not karate. And if that is the case... wtf is Sony thinking.

I don't want Cobra Kai: The Movie so I'm fine with it. Of course, they should follow the established storyline as much as they can, maybe bring in the best couple of actors from the series (and their really is only a few that are good imo) but there's a way to acknowledge the series but still work around it.

I wonder if itís going to be another reboot then and not actually a sequel. That would make more sense probably.

re: Untitled Karate Kid film (2024, D: Entwistle) S: Chan, Macchio, Wang

This is the plot I saw reported a month ago, before it was officially announced. I'd still keep this in the RUMOR category:

Sony is looking to cast a teen lead for a new Karate Kid film. Sony is looking for a 17-year-old male, Chinese actor who speaks both Mandarin and English. The character is referred to as Li and is said to be small for his age, but tough, smart and scrappy. He is said to be a skilled fighter and a student in Beijing who finds his life uprooted after his mother moves them to Brooklyn, New York.

Li is said to be struggling with a past tragedy, which drives a wedge between him and his doctor mom, who has managed to handle the same tragedy in her own way. After Li meets Mia, a student from his high school, and her father, Victor, at a local pizza restaurant, he’ll soon find his life has changed yet again – for the better. Li soon finds himself training Victor in the art of Kung Fu, despite his mother’s stance against violence and fighting, and ultimately back in the ring himself.

The film does not yet have a director attached, but Rob Lieber (Peter Rabbit) is attached to pen the script.

Sometimes... I'm so over this place and its stupidity.

Why not just cast the Chinese kid from the 2010 film and have his character Cheng be the one highlighted in the plot synopsis?

re: Untitled Karate Kid film (2024, D: Entwistle) S: Chan, Macchio, Wang

So... will this be Karate Kid 2? I guess I'll merge with that thread when we find out more.

We have learned that Jackie Chan is in talks to return for the new upcoming Karate Kid film from Sony Pictures, which will be directed by Jonathan Entwistle.

Jonathan Entwistle has served as a director and executive producer on two popular Netflix original series including I Am Not Okay With This and The End of the F**ing World. He has since been attached to work with Netflix on a new Power Rangers franchise that would span over both film and television.

Entwistle has also been developing Fred & Ginger, a biopic starring Margaret Qualley and Jamie Bell that follows the Hollywood icons Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, looking to examine what drove their careers while celebrating the magical chemistry between both of them. More recently, though, Entwistle has directed a handful of episodes of the original series Hello Tomorrow! for AppleTV+.

Jackie Chan is expected to reprise the role of Mr. Han, previously seen in 2010’s The Karate Kid led by Jaden Smith and directed by Harald Zwart. The remake followed 12-year-old Dre Parker (Smith) who moves to China and finds himself like a fish out of water. When he begins to be bullied by the local kids, Mr. Han steps in to teach Dre in the art of Kung Fu. While it is unknown if Jaden Smith will return in any capacity for Jonathan Entwistle’s new film, his screen partnership with Jackie Chan was seen as highly popular, receiving a collective Favorite On-Screen Team nomination at the People’s Choice Awards. Chan won Favorite Butt Kicker at the Kids’ Choice Awards for the film as well.

The Karate Kid (2010) was highly successful and grossed $359 million worldwide on a mere $40 million budget. Fast forward to the present and the original Karate Kid franchise has seen a resurgence in the form of Cobra Kai on Netflix. Created by Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz, and Hayden Schlossberg, Cobra Kai reunites Ralph Macchio and William Zabka in their respective staple roles of Daniel LaRusso and Johnny Lawrence in a legacy sequel series that passes the baton to a fresh group of kids within the modern All Valley Karate Tournament bouts.

Cobra Kai was originally one of YouTube’s only scripted originals on their Premium Red streaming service platform. Even though successful, the show was facing a doomed ending when YouTube announced an end to their original content pipeline. That was until Netflix picked up the series and Cobra Kai has since received even higher viewership and acclaim. The Netflix original has been renewed for a sixth and final season which has also been delayed due to the ongoing WGA strike. It is expected that the production will be given a new start date once the WGA strike ends with a strong deal for writers including fair pay and conditions.

Sony officially announced the new Karate Kid movie a few months ago with a release date of June 7, 2024. That release date will be pending any production delays caused by the ongoing WGA strike as well as availability of talent if the film does have its production delayed. While it is expected that Jackie Chan would reprise his role as Mr. Han, Sony officially stated in their announcement of the film that this next entry would be a return to “the original Karate Kid franchise” rather than continuing the legacy of the 2010 reboot. Only time will tell what direction Sony is going in with this new Karate Kid.
