I remember years ago there were reported test screenings for a Karate Kid 2 with Chan and Jaden. Some emails went out to reserve spots to see it. I don't know if they were real or not. I think one of those emails was posted here. But, nothing was officially confirmed that a sequel was actually shot.

Jackie Chan and Ralph Macchio are set to star. So this is part of the KK universe after all. Just not with the Cobra Kai creators.

They are taking audition tapes for the young actor to work with them.

It seems more like it's JC's Karate Kid 2... with Sony convincing Macchio to make an appearance.

This is like the next level of IP hell. It's not enough just to remake/reboot beloved movies/franchises. Now you have to mash those remakes together with the original because, surprise, they were in the same universe all along! Thanks Spider-Man: No Way Home. I guess we owe you one for this.

Unless they call it "The Karate Kid...Who Is Actually An Adult That Uses Kung Fu And Not Karate" I will have to pass.

Ralph Macchio definitely needed another paycheck, since Cobra Kai is on the last season haha
I can't blame him.

The hair dye in that video is off the charts.
And my thoughts about present day Jackie Chan probably precede me around here.
Were people really screaming to see these two old dudes team up, and this franchise revived rather than rebooted from scratch, and with a lead potentially recruited from a YouTube casting call? IP hell indeed, and with Chan involved, I’m confident that his minders overseas will be involved as well (wink-wink, hush-hush). Then again, nearly all of his Mainland China pictures over the last six or seven years have been comparative flops, so I suppose revisiting his U.S. franchises was a given at some point.

Why did I jokingly want Chris Tucker's Rush Hour character (James Carter) to appear at the end of that casting call video?

Having a casting call as broad as this and then settling on someone who already had a pretty high profile acting job seems a little disingenuous. But good for him!

Ben Wang is 24. Not exactly a kid, but Macchio was 23 when The Karate Kid came out. I'll definitely watch this to see how it turns out.

Wow, I never realized that. He looked way younger in the first movie to me. I figured he was the real life age of his character or maybe a year or two older at most.

In the "thing that makes you go hmmm" category..
Joshua Jackson Joins Sony’s ‘Karate Kid’ (Exclusive)
He's doing it for the kicks.
March 1, 2024 2:02pm
Joshua Jackson is putting on his dogi.
In his first feature film role in almost 10 years, the actor has joined the cast of Sony Pictures’ latest installment of Karate Kid.
Ben Wang, who led the cast of Disney+ series American Born Chinese, is starring in the coming-of-age martial arts drama, which also has Jackie Chan and Ralph Macchio reprising their iconic characters to continue the mythology of the original franchise.
Plot details are being kept under the mat, but the new installment will bring the story to the East Coast and focus on a teen from from China (Wang) who finds strength and direction via martial arts and a tough but wise mentor (or two).
Details on Jackson’s role were unavailable but he is described as one of the main characters in the piece.
Jonathan Entwistle, known for the teen television dramas I’m Not Okay With This and The End of the F***ing World, is directing. Rob Lieber, whose credits include Sony’s Peter Rabbit and Disney’s Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good Very Bad Day, wrote the script.
Karen Rosenfelt is producing the feature which has a Dec. 13 release date.
Jackson is a go-to name in the TV game, consistently bringing to life characters that range from earnest to shady as all get out. He recently starred in the Paramount+ drama Fatal Attraction and the Peacock drama series Dr. Death, for which Jackson earned a 2022 Critics Choice Award. He appeared in HBO’s Little Fires Everywhere starring opposite Reese Witherspoon and Kerry Washington, and co-starred in Showtime’s Emmy-winning drama The Affair.
The actor, whose early film credits include The Mighty Ducks, The Skulls and Cruel Intentions, is repped by CAA, Anonymous Content, and Hansen Jacobson.

Ming-Na Wen has joined the cast of Sony’s new “Karate Kid” film.
Previously announced cast members include “American Born Chinese” star Ben Wang in the titular role, plus Jackie Chan and Ralph Macchio, who will reprise their characters from previous entries in the franchise. Joshua Jackson will also star.
Much like the film’s plot, details of Wen’s role are currently under wraps. The movie will be directed by Jonathan Entwistle, the creator and director of Netflix’s “I Am Not Okay With This” and “The End of the F—ing World.” “Peter Rabbit” writer Rob Lieber will pen the screenplay, while Karen Rosenfelt will produce. Sony Pictures will release the film in theaters on Dec. 13, 2024.

I’m going to guess that she’s playing Ben Wang’s Mom.

Production has begun. They are filming in Montreal. I don’t know if Karate Kid is the final title or just working title.
