I wonder if this will open to more or close to more than the others grossed?

Seems to be some good buzz on it.

It'll probably make what the two other films made combined.

I'm tempted to catch this in theaters but I hated X and have not seen Pearl. Pearl is on PRIME to stream, though. A friend who already saw MaXXXine says it's awesome and that I'd probably like it.

I like both X and Pearl... I think?! It's weird. I thought they were good but not mind-blowing, so I don't get the hype. But I'm glad they're making some decent movies that are getting good traction and doing a bit of world building as a franchise. That's new territory for A24 and I'm glad they're finding success.

I haven't really liked anything Ti West has done since House of the Devil. I wanted to like In the Valley of Violence but that film is so incongruent in tone, it left me cold, along with everything he has done after House of the Devil.

Re: MaXXXine (2024, D: Ti West) -- X sequel -- S: Mia Goth

Just saw this tonight at an early 35mm screening. Someone from A24 was in attendance taking notes.

Up until the final 20 minutes this was the best of the trilogy in my book, a solid A.

The final 20 minutes are colossally stupid with a painfully obvious twist I really was hoping I didnít call in the first 30 minutes and West was going to swerve the audience. He didnít.

Overall it was worth seeing, but the brain dead final act knocked it down to a B.

Very small smattering of applause from a sold out crowd who seemed to be excited to be there.

it's July 4th, what were you expecting? i'm sure others have the outdoors in some fashion in mind for that day. i would think it's lucky at all to be open on a National holiday.

I expect to be watching an actress pretending to be a porn star trying to make it as an actress in 1980s Hollywood while the country is blowing itself up. This is America goddammit.

Saw this Wednesday night at an early access showing. The 7pm showing was sold out so we went to the 10:20pm showing. It was fun/good but i nodded off a bit near the end so I'll have to see it again before I give it a rating.

What are you even talking about? Movie theaters are open on Christmas. Fourth of July is historically one of the biggest days/weekends of the movie-going year.

That's my feeling as well. Based on the trailer, Maxxxine looks the most up my alley of the three and I can't wait to check it out. Hopefully sometime next week, but haven't been to the theater much the last two months and I have a lot to catch up on.

Re: MaXXXine (2024, D: Ti West) -- X sequel -- S: Mia Goth

I thought this was easily the weakest film of the trilogy. The plot is all over the place, which takes away the focus from the movie's title character and instead wastes screen time on a distractingly hammy Kevin Bacon, whose behavior throughout the film stretches credibility, and Bobby Cannavale and Michelle Monaghan as a pair of mostly generic cops who just seem to pop up here and there.

Was hoping the movie would be more about Maxine's rise through the adult and legit film industry and her psychotic devotion to becoming a star at all costs, but we don't get much clever insight into the movie world beyond the usual cliche dialogue ("The movie industry is a beast that will spit you out") and Maxine getting reprimanded by the director for showing up late to the set. Ti West needed to push the boundaries more and go much further with the story's lurid aspects. Despite its tawdry subject matter, the movie feels too safe and conventional.

There are some effectively stylish nods to the giallo genre, but the serial killer subplot isn't handled with much freshness and the movie as a whole feels like it was partly inspired by the 1984 exploitation flick Angel ("High school honor student by day. Hollywood hooker at night"), but fails to adequately deliver the 1980's nuttiness of that film (or the seediness of Ms. 45,which it also borrows from) and ends up feeling more like a mildly clever retro version rather than an inventive homage.

And then we come to the final 20 minutes, in which the movie completely loses its way and hastily wraps things up with a (clunky) action setpiece and the culmination of Maxine's character arc, which comes off as both predictable and unsatisfying. On the plus side, Mia Goth is in fine form here and holds your attention whenever she's onscreen, and Elizabeth Debicki and Giancarlo Esposito both provide effective support, but ultimately Maxxxine is one of those sequels that demonstrates the law of diminishing returns.

Thought this was decent, but I was expecting more. As others have said, the finale is pretty stupid.

will watch again on digital. I still think X is the best of the trilogy.

I absolutely agree.

This one really lacked the pure strangeness of Pearl and X, which stuck with me - it felt far more conventional down to all the distracting celebrity casting (except Debicki who was great).

I thought the third act was silly, but overall I liked it the best of the three films.

After the first few music choices, I was waiting for some Frankie Goes to Hollywood to drop. You have to respect the "Welcome to the Pleasuredome" selection though.

Re: MaXXXine (2024, D: Ti West) -- X sequel -- S: Mia Goth

I just got back from seeing it in a surprisingly full auditorium. I guess people wanted to escape the heat.

I enjoyed it up until the final act. I thought the final act was all over the place. Michelle Monaghan and Bobby Canavale felt wasted in this movie.

I wish the movie went more into the darker and seedier side of that era. I felt like they barely scraped the surface. They had the ingredients.

I know X is a little divisive here, but it's my favorite of the trilogy. This maybe gets 2nd and Pearl ends up being third.

Re: MaXXXine (2024, D: Ti West) -- X sequel -- S: Mia Goth

I took in a third viewing of X last night in preparation for seeing MaXXXine this afternoon. I think I liked X even more than the first two times I saw it at the theatre, it has no many wonderful details, and creates a real unique atmosphere.

The first half of MaXXXine is a blast. Great music, neon visuals, sleaziness... but as the movie went on my enthusiasm sagged.

I was very disappointed in the character of Maxxxine. Other than the scene between her and Buster Keaton, she was so passive. She didn't really do anything other than stand around while others controlled the outcome of the story. Perhaps that's what the filmmakers were going for, wanting to comment on the lack of control someone like Maxine has had her whole life, but it didn't make for a very interesting character. I would have been happier with Maxxxine the hero as opposed to Maxxxine the by-stander.

I only enjoyed the last third of the movie by reframing it as a needless 1980's sequel to a classier classic (Psycho III, or Texas Chainsaw Massacre Part 2), that you only like because its part of the series.

It's the Return of the Jedi of the series. Lots of good stuff, but an equal amount of lazy ideas.

Re: MaXXXine (2024, D: Ti West) -- X sequel -- S: Mia Goth

Other than a few missteps in the third act. I really loved it. 4/5

What a great trilogy.

On the subject of horror trilogies. I canít think of another single PLANNED horror trilogy. What I mean by that is, a trilogy that was designed to be a trilogy from the outset. With 3 films. No more. Almost every horror series I can think of is based on a successful first movie and then several sequels that are churned out until the brand is no longer profitable.

Is there another true horror trilogy?

Other than The Lord of the Rings and The Human Condition, I can't think of another other planned trilogy of ANY genre.
