Looks cute, Clue/Knives Out in a theater done with a dash of Wes Anderson style.

A mildly amusing but mostly inconsequential murder mystery that involves characters based on famous personalities like Agatha Christie (and her play The Mousetrap) and actor Richard Attenborough. There's a surfeit of suspects at play once the murder takes place, but the unraveling of the mystery isn't particularly compelling or thrilling. It's a wink-wink, tongue-in-cheek British comedy, but in a mostly conventional and understated manner -- not in a Monty Python-esque or Edgar Wright way. The movie works as a somewhat bland satire of the theater and cinema communities and of murder mysteries in general -- as it early on pokes fun at all the usual tropes you typically find in these type of productions. Rockwell mostly sleepwalks his way though the role of the jaded inspector on the case, but Saorise Ronan seems to be having a lot of fun as the eager but inexperienced inspector-in-training.

Just saw this. Almost managed to stay awake through the whole thing; nodded off in the last few mintues. The main characters were pretty boring and/or annoying; didn't care about any of them. At first it seemed like the movie wanted to be a comedy and then later a murder mystery but it failed at both and was just kind of meh.

I wanted to see this so I was excited to see it pop up on HBO MAX. The comedy worked better for me than the mystery, and while I enjoyed the theater and movie references and the historical setting, ultimately it felt more clever than entertaining.
