Let me know when the sequels to SALVADOR and PLATOON come out. Then I'll show some interest.

Are you going to post this is every thread that has a sequel you have absolutely no interest in? Or just this one?

A key stat:

https://variety.com/2022/film/box-of...rd-1235281049/

As expected, nearly 55% of ticket buyers were 35 or older. But that turnout is still impressive because adult audiences have been the most reluctant to return to theaters amid the pandemic. And, the dazzling stunts in “Maverick” managed to entice a significant percentage of younger moviegoers. The film’s reception should be helpful in continuing to appeal to younger crowds.

The stat I'm most interested in is what percentage of gross was from premium screens? I'd guess higher than the typical event picture. I wonder what that portends for box office legs and how soon before those IMAX and Dolby screens get taken by other films (I imagine Jurassic World will have them all in a couple of weeks).

Oh, come now. Aside from AVATAR, I haven't complained about a sequel in years. (Well, maybe a remake or two.) I just happen to be the only one this time.

Same! The old men were lining up at the bathroom after the movie

Had a blast with it. They did everything they could with Kilmer and that was a great scene. The flying was breathtaking

Loggins recorded a new version of Danger Zone, but the studio passed on it

https://variety.com/2022/music/news/...aa5dee56334940

Is this updated version of “Danger Zone” what we hear in the film?

No, I tried to do a re-recording where it was sounded, if not exactly like the original, as close as possible — but with better audio and sounds. Because that was 36 years ago and the audio had only gone so far. But he wanted the original vibe that song had. It was recorded at Musicland Studios so it was well-recorded, but it would have had a lot more punch if I could have done it in 5.0 But that said, he wanted to keep it reminiscent of the first “Top Gun” and set that mood right from the beginning.

Probably a good idea they passed on it. Loggins is 74 now and his voice isn't going to be as sharp even with improved studio equipment as it was 36 years ago.

^ Agreed. Even updated, “Danger Zone” is all 80s cheese.

Shockingly for a big summer blockbuster sequel, they continued to make the correct decisions every step of the way.

I do wonder if there were reshoots and re-edit and focus group on top of focus group. I don't mean that as a criticism, but few movies get five years between principle photography and release. Maybe some of the reason it works as well as it does, and much better than most sequels, is related to the luxury of time and an almost unlimited budget.

On that note, the listed budget for this is $152m, with Variety saying $170m and nobody knowing quite for sure. Either way, they did seem to utilize it pretty well.

For me, the Penny scenes dragged a bit more than I would have liked, but it was a fun movie. I was impressed that Glen Powell managed to out douche Miles Teller while also being more charismatic.

From what I recall, they only did one planned set of reshoots which delayed it from 2019 to 2020 and then 2020 was a wash. It’s been picture locked for at least 2 years now.

So apparently Val Kilmer's voice was actually re- created with technology for this movie.

I would swear this is old news and was discussed in the long-winded pre-release thread.

Saw this over the weekend and was not disappointed. Although Jennifer has slimmed down I feel she is a rarity like Selma Hyeck that still looks amazing into her 50s. Wish there had been more Ed Harris in this but I did enjoy John Hamm in his role. It's almost a shame there is unlikely going to be a part 3 as Cruise is going to be in his 70s by the time he wraps up the next Ghost Protocol MI movie. I loved the football scene with offense and defense going at the same time. I guess my biggest question is if we are willing to bomb an airfield why not hit the bunker with a couple of guided-missile bunker busters, and if that is not feasible why was the airfield so easy to hit. I guess the answer is not to overthink it and enjoy the ride. I guess I would rate this 4/5.

The Kilmer voice was discussed I believe in his documentary thread.

I'm not really that surprised it was digitally recreated even in a slight raspy way. He can barely talk in actuality.

Re: Top Gun: Maverick (Kosinski, 2022) — The Spoiler Filled Reviews Thread

Finally saw this. First time at a theater that has a screen bigger than IMAX. It was pretty damn big. And was only $5 for the matinee show. Theater holds 400 people and it was mostly full. There were a few things that bugged me but I won't get into them. It was still one of the better movies I've seen. And Jennifer Connelly was a nice upgrade to Kelly (her cheek bones were always seemed too prominent).

5/5

Yeah my showing for Tuesday discount day was also almost entirely sold out in their largest auditorium. Felt like things were back to normal (the Marvel crowds around here are usually younger, this had a broad age distribution)

3rd biggest May Tuesday ($15.8m) after The Avengers ($17.6m) and Infinity Wars ($23.4m)

That's not bigger than most IMAX, perhaps you have been to some "Lie-Max" screens. The IMAX that I saw the movie at is 6 stories tall and 84 feet wide.

"Most"... Which IMAX is more prevalent out in the wild? I would say "most" are digital IMAX vs "70mm" IMAX. (I don't have actual installed numbers. I'm not that much of a nerd nor do I give a shit). Not everyone has access to 70mm IMAX.

Bottom line, got a really nice presentation for $5.
