Re: Top Gun: Maverick (Kosinski, 2022) — The Spoiler Filled Reviews Thread

I think this was our first time back in a theater since Dec 2019.

Very good follow-up to the first one. A bunch of nostalgia and redos from the first movie, but they were done well. I felt it did get a bit over the top with the Star Wars trench run ending though.

I also liked having the main credits during the opening, I wish more movies would go back to that.

Right down to losing their guidance system and having to rely on “the force”.

Just got back from seeing this and absolutely loved every minute of it! We’ve never seen anything like those flying sequences on film before. Every time they were in their jets it looked spectacular and felt completely authentic. Everything from the little jolts of leaving the air craft carrier to the facial expressions when the pilots were pushing Gs. It all looked so authentic.

I also thought Miles Teller did a bang up job playing Goose’s son. He captured a lot of the mannerisms of a young, cocky, Anthony Edwards.

Jon Hamm also gave a great performance for having such a minimal, generic role.

I need to upgrade a few more items in my home theater sound system before this is released on home video.

I’ll have to let this movie sink in a little more and/or watch it a few more times but I think this falls into my Top 3 of the last 10 years, maybe more!

The ending kinda reminded me of Iron Eagle.

Re: Top Gun: Maverick (Kosinski, 2022) — The Spoiler Filled Reviews Thread

Saw it in Dolby Cinema. Bought tickets for the family, the inlaws, my wife’s aunt and my NP and her family. Spent almost $200 on tickets. Don’t care. It was great. Very fun movie. Really delivered the action but also better story and characters than I expected. Some stupidity and deus ex machina at the end but it didn’t bother me much. I was so entertained. Thought Connolly and Hamm were terrific in their roles, Didn’t know Glen Powell but thought he was outstanding. Even Miles Teller did a great job and I don’t like him much usually.
Top Gun was my NP and her husband’s favorite film so I was happy to take them and they were also really impressed. This film is so much better than I expected it to be (before the reviews came rolling in) and does way more than ride a wave of nostalgia, which is all I was expecting it to do.
He’s probably crazy and insufferable in real life, but man is Tom Cruise a movie star who DELIVERS for his audience. You have to admire and respect that.

I really like the Lady Gaga song "Hold my Hand" I think they used it really well in the movie. Light touches through the movie and it was a beautiful to use during the final scene and the cast credit video roll out.

I've streamed the hell out of the song over the last week. Too bad this isn't the 1990s. I would totally buy a CD single of it.

Gaga's second Oscar is in the bag. Can't imagine a better, more popular movie song coming out this year - - this is probably the best one since The Shallow ironically.

Did they ever explain why that mission could’n’t have be done with drones? Seems like the perfect sort of mission for tiny unmanned aircrafts actually.

Caught this Thursday night in RPX. Agree with what everyone here is saying. I would love to have a physical soundtrack, so I think I'll wait until they offer it on vinyl. It's interesting because despite having a lot of good songs, the actual ST doesn't seem to have that many .

Kevin Feige needs to lock Glenn Powell up in a multi film deal to play Johnny Storm (or some other top-tier MCU character) immediately before he becomes a top-paid guy. He's a fucking star.

Those are the types of questions we don’t ask about this kind of movie.

I guess Ed Harris’ character sort of mentioned it by telling Maverick he and his kind were obsolete.

I popped in my Top Gun 4K disc last night and watched one of the behind the scenes documentaries. The original movie was made for about $15M back in 1985 (when it was filmed) and that was considered really expensive at the time.

Don't know about star, but he does have one of the most punchable new faces that I've seen from these younger Hollywood actors. Smug would not begin to describe it.

This has got to be the best reviewed Cruise movie of his career in both critics and audience scores.

96% critics and still at 99% audience score.

I saw it also has an A+ Cimema score.

The only "known" critic that gave it a Rotten score was Scott Mendelson from Forbes.

Hangman started out as kind of a smug douche, but IMO grew more likeable towards the end. The character was definitely heavily inspired by young Iceman from the original movie.

I think that was the point. One might think of him as the Iceman character, but in reality is closer to the way Maverick was in the original. I'm glad that they decided to give him a redemption story arc rather than making him an asshole for the whole movie.

Glen Powell is great and has turned in awesome performances in the first season of Scream Queens, Everybody Wants Some, Set It Up, amongst other things. He was originally up for the role of Rooster and was my preference at the time when the casting news was going around. But I think it turned out alright with Teller in the role.

I didn't read Scott's review, but boy... the others sure seemed hellbent on not liking the movie going in. Still, 300+ reviews and 96% is pretty damn impressive.
Edit: Scott doesn't hide his bias on twitter either, he's no better than the others...

It's a shame the film only has 2wks for premium screens, I wonder if theaters will try to keep some IMAX showtimes when Jurassic World opens...but I'm sure all of that is negotiated ahead of time.

Oh shit, he played Chad Radwell in Scream Queens! Ok, no fucking wonder.

You must have dropped about $150 bucks on popcorn and sodas for everyone.

If I'm paying $200 in tix for Dolby, somebody else better be buying the beer and popcorn.

I liked that it wasn't a big turn or anything where he "saw the error of his ways" but that it all felt natural to his character--he might be a pompous ass but at the end of the day he is still US Navy and he was rooting for Rooster to succeed and was also there to save his fellow pilot when he needed to.

Nope. I bought the tickets. They can buy that stuff themselves. My NP 's husband wore his Air Force flight jacket and bought a souvenir popcorn tin.

WTF is NP?? Did you take your Nurse Practitioner to the movies?!
