Eh, it's a perfectly fine popcorn action movie. I do not get the extreme love or need to rewatch, but that's just me.

Way, way, way late to this game, but finally got to watch this last night with my wife. We enjoyed the hell out of it. Hit the right notes of nostalgia while also being something completely new and different. The ariel stuff was freaking amazing. Loved it. Glad I bought it, so we can show our kids. They hated the original.

I think the original pales in comparison to this. Might be outlandish to say, but I’m sticking to it. This will be my most watched movie past five years.

Agreed. Also, it was a little too convenient that Maverick and Goose's kid didn't get captured after landing in enemy territory; then they discovered a perfectly good American plane that Maverick could fly in a hangar they managed to get to without being shot at; and then they managed to take off in said plane even though the runway had just been blown up to prevent the enemy from using it.

You can suspend disbelief or not, but everything seemed to be thought out here.

Damn, this movie was incredible- can't believe they did all that just for a movie. Got goosebumps....that hasn't happened since I was a kid lol.
Although the characters weren't fleshed out at all, I still cared for all of them and didn't want to see them die.
Really fun flick.

Hah, Paramount gunning for that 1.5 Billion! I saw it three times in IMAX, I'm probably good. Still, if I have an open weeknight....

I'll likely go to check it out again, hoping it will remind me of the warm, sunny summer when I originally saw it. Big bonus if we have snow that day.

I didn’t realize until just now that the guy who played “Bob” is Bill Pullman’s son.
The movie is still awesome and now that we’re near the end of the year, I can see this doing pretty well at the Oscars. At the very least, picking up a ton of technical awards.

This movie is eminently rewatchable. I’m in my fourth viewing and just can’t get enough. Popcorn and just plain fun.

This will be on Paramount + tomorrow for those who still haven't seen it or don't own it.
A friend gave me the 4K disc for Christmas and I did purchase the 4K digital copy from Vudu in September, so I'm good.

I just watched this for the fourth time. Still catching things I missed. Such a blast. I haven’t ever seen a movie this many times in such a short span of time, ever. Just something about this movie.

Part of me wonders if it's because I'm just so starved for a fun movie without a superhero in it. But yes, I know what you mean. It managed to play off nostalgia while not being a complete retread of the first movie (unlike a few other "reboots" I can think of).

Re: Top Gun: Maverick (Kosinski, 2022) — The Spoiler Filled Reviews Thread
I think aside from being a non-superhero movie, it’s just an all around well made movie. On the surface it feels like a rehash of the first, and there are just enough elements to make it feel familiar but there’s so much more under the surface.
Take Jennifer Connelly’s character for instance. The surface impression is that Penny is just like all the other wife/girlfriend characters in these types of movies that stays at home pining for her man to return but she’s the opposite. She runs a successful business, had a life while Maverick was not around, and when he returns, she’s the one calling the shots. After he triumphantly returns from his mission to give Penny her “An Officer an a Gentleman” moment of carrying her out to live happily ever after, Maverick walks into the bar and where’s Penny? She’s not there. She had shit to do and it wasn’t waiting for Maverick to show up to “rescue” her. She was the one who got him at the end, on her terms.
It’s those little touches that makes the movie special, IMO.

^ that’s a great analysis. I thought the same things. Similar, but different.
