According to a new report from Puck News, Cruise could earn close to $100 million from Top Gun: Maverick due to his contract. The outlet reports that Cruise was paid $12.5M as a base salary, but he also stands to make 10 percent of the movie's first-dollar gross "with escalators that increase his percentage at certain milestones." The star's backend pay does not kick in until Paramount has earned $125M in revenue, but that will not be an issue for Cruise's billion-dollar film. Between the theatrical performance and what the movie will earn in rentals and streaming. Puck News estimates an $80 to 90M payday for Cruise based on Top Gun: Maverick.

Interesting about Cruise not getting his extra money unless/until Paramount makes 125 million in profit off the film ..

Saw this last night and the more I think about, the less impressed I am with it. It as essentially a remake of Top Gun, but with a wiser Maverick and finale directly lifted from the trench run of A New Hope. It seems like the entire conflict between Rooster and Maverick could have been solved off screen years prior if people were capable of talking to one another.

Seems like this would be the reason Cruise was so bullish on not just dumping this on streaming platforms last year.

Yes, it was a brilliant move to continue to sit on it and wait for the right time to release it… and it PAID OFF.

If this went to streaming in 2020, it would have been pirated to hell and would not have made anything close to a profit with streaming revenue. Tom and his reps negotiated a really good deal for this movie and he bet in himself that this movie would be a hit. And it worked.
And 2021 the theater market probably wasnt strong enough yet for this movie and thats why they waited to gamble another year. The timing was perfect.

We took the whole family, We all liked it. It was "okay" to our youngest but our oldest loved it. We adults both liked it better than the first one, which I've had no interest in revisiting.

Saw this yesterday and enjoyed it. Good nods to the original and was pausing at three points in the movie.
First was when Rooster and Maverick were shot down and the dialogue between them in the forest. I paused but the crowd I was watching it with really enjoyed it so that worked.
Second was at the end when (can't remember call sign) came in and saved them. Knew they wouldn't kill off Maverick but was wondering, who is going to save them?
Third was a combo throughout the movie. How old was Rooster supposed to be? If 2020/2022 40 something? Also Maverick and then Jennifer Connelly never wearing a helmet while riding a motor cycle. Safety people.

I dont think Tom Cruise has ever worn a helmet on a motorcycle.

We saw this the other day and both really enjoyed it. I still wasnt eager to go to the cinema (first film since COVID); and wearing a mask for 2+ hours wasnt fun. Anyhow, it was definitely great to see it in the theater. I dont think streaming will do it justice.
Whats quite interesting is, much like Star Wars, the plot and beats are very close to the original. However, here it felt more fresh for some reason.
I had also totally forgot this was direct by Joseph Kosinski, so that was an added bonus.

Is it just me or is that highly misleading? What does TITANIC's "first run" even mean. TITANIC was in theaters for months. That was one long first run. There's no way TOP GUN MAVERICK has beaten that. And it's certainly not "Paramount's highest grossing domestic movie of all time." Not after just a few weeks in theaters. What's going on here?
Paramount Pictures today announced that Top Gun: Mavericks first-run release has surpassed Titanic first-run releaseas the studios highest-grossing domestic film in its 110-year history, with over $601.919M in US box office to-date. In its original 1997 release, Titanic grossed $600.788M.

Domestic Releases:
December 19th, 1997 (Wide)
April 4th, 2012 (Wide) as Titanic in 3D
April 4th, 2012 (IMAX)
December 1st, 2017 (Limited)
It made $600m (unadjusted) from its initial 1997 run, it made $59m more from the re-releases for a total of $659m. Top Gun Maverick has now made more than Titanic's initial 1997 - 1998 run, but hasn't made as much as Titanic + re-releases yet.

Sony pictures says they deserve some credit for Top Gun Maverick's massive success
The gist is, their studio heads say their movies got the ball rolling getting people back into theaters.

Right? Like how TF do you even attempt to take credit for that? Should they also take credit for it if the trailer for Maverick was showing before Carnage?
