Looks like this is working it's way back onto premium screens. AMC in my area has 10:30 IMAX shows starting this wknd. (way too late for me)

This has made $475 million domestically through Monday.
I thought this would be a hit, but these numbers are amazing.

Yup it's doing incredibly well. It got all quadrants back into theaters and legged out strong enough to cover both Father's Day and 4th of July.
It's expected to be #1 again this weekend, topping Elvis and everything else. It should crack a billion worldwide in the next week.

Returning to IMAX in select theaters on Friday. I’ve seen it three times. I’m good. I’d rather watch something new.
If you haven’t seen this by now, you’re either not interested or simply have no intention of ever setting foot in a theater.

This was no accident. They sat on this film for a long time and released it at the perfect time. Brilliant move and damn did it pay off. Not only did it hit that trifecta, but also gave certain people a good reason to go back to the theater after not having gone for at least a couple of years.

I watched it in DD at an AMC but really wanted to watch it at our local true IMAX theater that's unfortunately 45 mins away. I thought this would be the perfect 4th of July movie so maybe it will be back in premium theaters for the holiday before Thor takes over. I checked their schedule and interestingly for the 4th of July weekend they have Minions scheduled for the afternoon shows but don't have anything scheduled for the night showing yet. I bet they bring it back. If they have the flexibility for that kind of thing I'm not sure. They're considered one of those educational IMAX theaters so I'm nos sure how all that wheeling and dealing affects them.

I don't see them putting it on streaming until sometime in August maybe with how well it's doing. Who knows when this will be out on UHD disc, since Sonic 2 and Lost City aren't hitting the format until 4 months after their theatrical releases.

I don't think I've actually seen the original Top Gun all the way through, but have absorbed the movie through bits and pieces and it's long-standing place in pop culture.
Like everyone else here, thought it was an astoundingly well-made entertaining movie.
I thought it was interesting how much Val Kilmer with his glasses, hair-style, throat covering, and perma-grin resembled how Roger Ebert looked during his final years. Hard to believe the filmmakers would do that, but have difficulty believing they didn't know what they were doing.

I took my 18-year-old son to see it this weekend (I went solo the first time). He say the attention it was getting online and asked me out of the blue if we could watch Top Gun. After wiping a single man-tear from my eye, I said "sure, son." Which he wanted to do because he wanted to see Maverick.
It was just as fun the second time. And watching them that close together really does drive home that it's the superior film to the original in almost every way (because of Goose, the original is funnier).
And it also shows there is just not a lot out there for people to see. We went to the Alamo again (I only see movies there now because I want a silent audience and no phones) which is spendy - and it was about 1/2 full for a 2PM matinee on a Saturday on one of their big screens.
I could see it getting another surge this weekend. The only new release is Minions.

I finally had the chance to see this today, and it completely lived up to expectations.
I'd give the original a C+ or a B- (if I'm feeling generous), but this was a solid A.
Compared to the original it had much better character development, better dialogue, much less like an extended music video with dialogue. This was a really well done movie. A ton of fun and entertaining as hell!
4.5/5
