Re: El Muerto (2024) - S: Bad Bunny - set in Sony Spider-verse

There was an independent film that no one saw back in the ate 2000's called "El Muerto" that starred Wilmer Valderama. It was based off of a n indie graphic novel of some kind. They later added the subtitle of "The Dead One" for the non-Spanish speaking crowd.

Kraven, Madame Web, El Muerto - yeah Sony's showing some pretty bad judgment, especially in the wake of Morbius.

I don't expect a big budget for El Muerto, so if it's a one and done to capitalize on Bad Bunny's fame... so be it. Obviously, like Aaron Taylor Johnson, Sony liked his work on Bullet Train to give him a starring role. Odd, but safe choice if they can get the budget under $50M.

This sounds like those old and out-of-touch movie producers in the 1960s trying to appeal to hip young rock-and-roll teenagers. They made movies that were just -- off.

"We'll use a Mexican hero to appeal to the Latin market."
"The star is Puerto Rican."
"So we'll make the hero a Puerto Rican. No one can tell the difference."

Disclaimer: I've never heard of El Muerto, barely heard of the name of Bad Bunny, and I know nothing about lucha libre wrestling.

Many Anglos don't remember the absolute SHITSHOW of bad press when they cast a Puerto Rican actress to play Selena (a Mexican-American). There is a lot of resentment towards Puerto Ricans from other Hispanic cultures.

Jonás Cuarón (“Desierto”) is on board to direct Sony Pictures’ “El Muerto” starring Grammy Award-winner and mega recording artist Bad Bunny, also known as Benito A Martínez Ocasio, TheWrap has exclusively learned. Additionally, Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer (“Blue Beetle”) is writing the script, which is in early development.

Aaaand as a Puerto Rican I never even heard of Selena until the movie came out (still haven't watched it either). Then again, if not for all the fawning over him down here regarding his small role in Bullet Train I'd be incapable to point Bad Bunny out in a lineup. I remember wondering why some girls in the theater went nuts when he appeared onscreen when I first saw the trailer for that movie.

You're not alone. My dad raved about some music video he did featuring the Simpsons (Spanish language cast). All I liked was the Simpsons. The song was muted rather quickly by me.

Pulled from the release schedule.

I'm betting this movie isn't happening.

Bad Bunny's publicist says he's out of this movie.

And as I posted in June, it was pulled from it's 2024 release. This project isn't happening.

At least the project was appropriately titled.
