Three Thousand Years Of Longing (2022, D: George Miller) S: Idris Elba, Tilda Swinton
George Miller’s anticipated fantasy-romance-drama “Three Thousand Years Of Longing” with Idris Elba and Tilda Swinton will world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, Variety has learned.
Both Miller and Swinton are Cannes regulars. Swinton appeared in five movies at last year’s festival, while Miller served as jury president in 2016 and his most recent film “Mad Max: Fury Road” played at the fest in 2015.
The intriguing plot, for which details are being kept under wraps, revolves around the encounter between a scholar and a djinn who offers her three wishes in exchange for his freedom. Their conversation, in a hotel room in Istanbul, leads to consequences neither would have expected.
Miller previously described the film as being dialogue-driven and “anti-Mad Max” with some action scenes. Budgeted around $60 million, the movie is produced by Doug Mitchell.
MGM has North American rights will distribute via its United Artists Releasing label. The movie is also co-produced by Victor Hadida at Metropolitan FilmExport who will distribute in France. Sunac Culture, meanwhile, has Chinese distribution rights. Both the North American and Chinese deals were brokered by CAA Media Finance. FilmNation handles international rights.
Variety has reached out to FilmNation for comment.

"Mad Max: Fury Road" was so fucking awesome that I will at least give all George Miller's future projects a look.

I thought this was going to be a documentary about the wait for Furiosa.

Looks like Jeunet to me, but he's always been Gilliam esque so I guess go to the source.
I'm down.

This is looking to get shorted in theaters. Rogue One us getting all of the IMAX screens for the re-release. There are no Dolby Cinema screens for this yet. I'm holding off getting tickets for now.

This is out this week.
More reviews have been added since Cannes, but still seems pretty mixed.
I'm surprised there isn't more buzz around a new George Miller film.

I’m actually surprised my theaters are getting this. Hoping I’ll have time this weekend to see it.

My theater is giving this one the shaft. The IMAX screens are all being taken up by the re-release of Rogue One and the Dolby Cinema screens have Maverick for two showtimes and Elvis on another one. This is only getting it on regular non-premium screens. That kills my buzz. May have to switch and go to an unfamiliar AMC with DC.

My theater is getting this, so I'm checking it out. Odd that it's getting a screen, as my local AMC didn't screen either Fall or Vengeance, both of which had bigger marketing that this one. I honestly didn't know it was a George Miller movie until this month.

Props to the marketing time on that initial trailer because that sold me on a movie that this definitely is not.
If you want to see a movie with Tilda and Idris, dressed in bath towels, telling each other stories in a hotel room then this is the movie for you. It was all just rather dull.

I loved this movie. The bulk of the screentime is spent showing a series of stories about the Djinn's multiple imprisonments and his attempts to free himself over thousands of years. As anyone can see from the trailer, the visuals are awe-inspiring. The stories pile fascinating events and characters one on top of the other. In turn, they are funny, sensual, riveting, solemn. There were moments various members of the audience gasped out of surprise, or appreciation, or sadness. Given the emotional overload, and fast-pace of what's come before, I may not have appreciated the shift in tone and location of the final twenty or so minutes, although they certainly gave me lots to think about as they played out.
Obviously, I found the movie nowhere near as "dull" as dex14, but our taste is individual, we can't all like the same things. However, to describe this movie as "Tilda and Idris, dressed in bath towels, telling each other stories in a hotel room", is like describing Top Gun Maverick as "If you want to see Tom Cruise trying to strike up a relationship with a woman who runs a bar, then this movie is for you." I don't want people thinking 3000 Years Of Longing is like a stage play of two people talking in a hotel room. Put together, that's maybe twenty minutes of film. The movie I think this is best compared to is The Fall.
This is an overwhelmingly visual movie. The stories' inventiveness may only be outweighed by their heartbreak. I hope people give this a chance.
Like all movies, there's things to nitpick I don't feel like going into because they're either minor, or something that might be cleared up on a second viewing.
And finally, I was amused looking at the poster afterwards, and seeing the MPAA rating "R: For some sexual content, graphic nudity, and brief violence". Here in Ontario, it's rated PG. I'm not sure if they're too strict or we're too lenient

Massive bomb
I've seen the trailer for this, but even right now with new movies coming out at a snail's pace, this wasn't something that I was interested in.

Between this and Jupiter Ascending, if you as an actor find yourself wearing elf ears and it isn't LOTR, you should run away as fast as you can! How something like this came to be financed would be a far more interesting story.

I feel like Idris Elba is a great actor who picks some really terrible projects. Dark Tower, anyone?
