This might be a rental, Sydney Sweeney is my two favorite actresses in Hollywood today.

I'm still trying to figure out why they dressed her up in a She's All That kind of way

I noticed that all the cars in this trailer are late 80’s to late-90’s (maybe early 00’s-ish) models – like that almost-new looking Chevy Caprice that falls off the bridge, a model that stopped looking like that in 1989. Also, the doctor/optometrist’s computer is one of those big-ass boxy monitors from the era. There’s also a Calvin Klein billboard in one shot that seems to be from the olden days. And now that you mention SHE’S ALL THAT (1999), I’m wondering if there’s some reason this would need to be set around the turn of the century (possibly)? Is it from the comics? Were VENOM and MORBIUS set in that era? I can’t recall. Is it a “works better without cell phones” scenario for the screenwriters?

Also, I share the sentiment of a few folks in this thread that Dakota Johnson isn’t much of an actress. I get that vibe from Sydney Sweeney, too, based on this and the ANYONE BUT YOU trailer. Thought I hadn’t seen her before, then looked her up on IMDb to discover I’d seen her in three other movies: ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD, John Carpenter’s THE WARD (2010), and, oddly enough, SPIDERS 3D (2013). Don’t recall her standing out in any of them, although she was young enough in the latter two not to be a major character I presume.

It's set in the "early 2000s", per reports from Boston where they shot.

Sweeney is fantastic in Euphoria, but she is primarily unhinged and crying at any given moment in that series. It's weird to see her not doing that (also weird to see her with so many clothes on).

Watch Reality on Max.

In regard to the time period, Adam Scott and Emma Roberts are playing a young Ben and Mary Parker, so I'd assume it's "period" film.

Is there significance to that, though? Is it just because the comics these characters appeared in were published in that era? Or maybe they weren’t? I’m not familiar with any of them, to be honest. Seems like a lot of effort just to separate their world from the current Spider-Man or whatever, or is Sony expecting a bunch of spinoffs for each of the spider women in this, eventually dovetailing with Spider-man’s character (even though I guess that can’t happen, contractually?).

If I had to guess... it's just Sony's cheap attempt to include recognizable characters of the Spider-man lore. Making them younger... if they want to eventually link it to the Holland timeline, it needs to be pre-2017.

Yeah it's definitely because they want you to somehow believe the Peter Parker that they can't directly reference is somehow part of this universe in the future. But again unless all three of these spider women/girls are adrift in time, why would you want them set in the past before Spider-man?

Another anachronism is the Sony PSP someone is playing on the train.

For the timeline to make any kind of sense, the only one that needs to be in the past is Madame Web herself. But, even as a prequel, Johnson is to young for the role. Remember, this is how Madame Web typically looks:

I assume Dakota is supposed to be around the same age as Adam Scott's character, so considering Tomei as Aunt May a Madame Webb of around that age seems doable. Not that I think they thought through any of that, I just want a no-prize from Stan.

That trailer was a complete wreck. Looks worse than Morbius.

What exactly is Sony's plan with all of these Spider-verse spin off movies?

Desperate to capitalize on Spider-Man outside of the MCU.

As much as I love the animated Spiderverse movies, they should have just done live-action Miles Morales since Peter Parker was tied up with the MCU. I don't know whatever legal things were happening but that should have been a priority. It could have easily been concurrent with the Holland Spider-Man and wouldn't even have to cross over. They could have brought in Kraven, Venom, Madame Web, Spider-Girl, etc. - just pit them against Miles instead of Peter.

I like Venom well enough, but the fact that he's in the black "Spider-Man" suit without being associated with Spider-Man is deeply stupid and it just goes from there.

On the bright side we got Miles and Gwen in a far superior animated franchise so I can't say I'm all that disappointed.

Still doesn't make up for the crapfest the live action SSU has to offer. At least that El Muerto POS is off the books.

I'm just saying we could have an alternate timeline where we have crappy Miles (who probably couldn't even call himself Spider-man) and Gwen live action movies and no spider-verse...

or worse that and crappy movie tie in videogames instead of the masterpieces we're getting.

Across The Universe basically says all these SSU 'variants' can and do exist unfortunately.
