Re: Madame Web (2024, D: Clarkson) S: Dakota Johnson
"Meanwhile, in another universe…” In a switch from the typical genre, Madame Web tells the standalone origin story of one of Marvel publishing's most enigmatic heroines. The suspense-driven thriller stars Dakota Johnson as Cassandra Webb, a paramedic in Manhattan who may have clairvoyant abilities. Forced to confront revelations about her past, she forges a relationship with three young women destined for powerful futures...if they can all survive a deadly present.

That looks better than expected for Sony.

Since this has been so long delayed I wonder how long they've wrapped up this cast if this actually does well. I know Merced is already on tap to play Hawkgirl in the Superman movie.

I kind of have a weird respect for Sony throwing millions of dollars at a theatrical movie featuring maybe the 103rd most important Spider-Man character. That's commitment to the i.p. There's almost 0% chance I'll see it, but I respect it nonetheless.

Not that I mind Miles and Gwen being in far superior animated movies, it just seems like a weird thing to pass on when all you have is the Spider characters.
Also Adam Scott as

It's really odd to me that they didn't do a live action Spider Gwen/Ghost Spider movie (I realize that would be tough without Gwen in the main movies, but it's multiverse so..) or a Jessica Drew Spiderwoman movie or basically anything else besides this and Morbius. I mean maybe someone had a vision about... Madame Web... and came to them with this but I doubt it.

And I don't believe for a second that those Spiderwomen (and spider girl) costume shots are anything more than a cameo in the movie itself, otherwise why not plaster that everywhere?

It looks better than the last several films by Marvel.
Seriously.
This definitely wasn't on my radar, and I have zero knowledge of how Madame Web is connected to the Spider-Verse. Who is the Spider-Man that keeps popping up in the trailer?
Sydney Sweeny looks like she thought she was in one of those ugly duckling movies where the girl puts on glasses, dumpy clothes and musses their hair and the jocks dare the popular quarterback to take her to prom.

He's basically not really a villain in the comics so like Madame Webb herself there's probably only a tangential connection between comic character and on screen character.
It was in JMS's run where Spider-man's powers weren't just given to him by a radioactive spider, they were granted to him by that spider through some hocus pocus spider totem. So he's like one of the original people with "spider totem" powers and he's been watching Peter all his life to protect him from some interdimensional bad guy named Morlun who hunts people that are granted the totem powers (he also hid Silk away). Morlun is the one who hunted spider characters across the multiverse and is where the whole spiderverse came from (though those movies wisely avoid him) And the only reason I'm putting this nonsense in here is because I'm sure it's not going to be touched upon in the movie.
Sydney Sweeney is Julia Carpenter, basically a Spiderwoman (but not Jessica Drew from the original cartoon) who was introduced in the original Secret Wars and originally had a costume like Spidey's black costume. Celeste O'conner is another Spiderwoman (still not Jessica Drew). Isabela Merced is Anya Corazon, Spidergirl. Basically all the E list characters that you might see in the background of spiderverse somewhere.

This looks like an easy pass, given how generic the trailer makes it look.

Looks utterly horrible. Dakota Johnson cannot act her way out of a paper bag. After watching the trailer, I agree with this take:

What's next, a Kraven the Hunter fi... oh, wait.
This whole "Spider-Man movies without Spider-Man actually in them" sub-sub-genre is not one I had on my bucket list a few years back...

I have to admit, I laughed when one of them threw something at her as she was claiming she could see the future.
Looks "bland with potential." Something enjoyable enough to eat popcorn to for 90 minutes.
