I'm assuming the writer is playing along, and just decided to write a parody of a review.

Her criticism is that self-described "white and nerdy" WAY is appropriating the work of Black artists and all he wants to achieve is being funny.

She sees Black artists as being disrupters in American society, and wants WAY to use his comedy to be disruptive and have something substantive to say, instead of settling for just being inoffensively amusing. Or at least, she wants some self-examination on WAY's part of why he would devote a 40 year career to never trying to say anything important through his comedy and platform.

Al has been disruptive his whole life, in my opinion. How many songs with actual meaning and stories behind them did he parody and turn into a 3 minute joke about food? He's been doing a great job for decades, of keeping pop stars in their place.

Re: Weird: The Al Yankovic Story (2022, D: Appel) - S: Daniel Radcliffe

I heard a clip from a Weird Al interview on the radio here late last week, presumably recorded back around the time of the TIFF premiere, where he plainly said (paraphrasing) that he and his collaborators chose to spoof the biopic genre because there isn't much in his own life that is interesting enough to justify a realistic treatment.

Also, pretty much the only reason he made it is because of the fake funny or die trailer that was made in 2013, and people kept asking him when the movie was coming out.

I've mentioned it before but in his Behind the Music, at the 45 minute mark when most of the time the band in question has broken up or the tour bus has crashed or the lead singer has checked into rehab for the 10th time, the best they could do with Al was that Coolio kind of got mad at him once. It makes sense that he'd go completely the other way with a parody of a biopic.

He's a Christian vegetarian who's been married for over 20 years and has had the same drummer, guitar and bass player since they all first joined. Of course he has to spice up the bio for the movie.

Re: Weird: The Al Yankovic Story (2022, D: Appel) - S: Daniel Radcliffe

I thought this was really fun for the most part. The "oh my god we're at a polka party" at the beginning had me in stitches. I was kinda bummed out by the assassination ending. Other than that, I had a blast and it definitely had me feeling some UHF vibes throughout, especially when he goes to rescue Madonna.

The movie was OK, but I expected something funnier. I really liked the beginning when polka was cool and even his roommates read the polka magazine, but I didn't like the direction it took from there.

Re: Weird: The Al Yankovic Story (2022, D: Appel) - S: Daniel Radcliffe

Just finished it. I get it. The movie is a parody of musician biopics. The blowup at the band, the disapproving parents, the drugs. He has the same band mates, he's a great person and human being and family man, the worst thing you can say about him is that he made Coolio mad once. He made a joke trailer once and people kept asking him when it was coming out but he didn't feel his life merited a movie so he made this.

It was the stupidest thing I've seen in a while, in a bad way. I hated it. And I like his music and parodies. Even something low brow like Scream.

I laughed when the real Weird Al as a music executive had Will Forte go full Mcgruber on the Weird Al in the movie.

I was really looking forward to watching this tonight with a few friends, but it appears we are shit out of luck. We aren’t going to all huddle around my iPad.

I watched it last night and loved every minute of it, especially when it went full UHF. Certainly not the movie I was expecting, but perhaps I should have known better.

Just watched it and loved it. I cried multiple times. I wasn't suspecting it would be so serious. I haven't watched the last season of Narcos yet so didn't know what Madonna did. Hopefully zombie Al got his revenge and hasn't started a zombie apocalypse.

Any casting ability? I sent it from my iPad to my AppleTV. I thought I saw you could do the same with Chromecast.

I almost bought a cheap Roku stick for this too but the iPad worked just fine.

^ I couldn't straight up cast it from my Android phone to my Nvidia Shield Pro. I had to mirror my phone's screen, and then zoom in a bit for it to just fill the width (I'm fine with black bars, but windowboxed was just bad), so quality wasn't great and there was a perceptible lag in the audio. Shitty experience, but I still loved the movie.

That’s basically what I ended up doing. I borrowed an AppleTV from a friend and I was able to cast it to that.
My Sony tv has always been a bastard about casting/screen mirroring.

All that being said, I very much enjoyed this film. It was definitely worth all the hassle. It sure would be nice if it came out on disc, but I won’t hold my breath.

This was pretty damn awesome if not a bit too long. I hope this sends people looking for UHF. I have a Roku so easy enough to watch. Just sucked it had commercials. I’ll almost certainly pick this up if they release it on disc.

My Roku Channel stream from iPad to AppleTV did NOT have commercials. There were obvious commercial breaks (screen goes black at the end of a scene) but it never played an actual commercial.

No commercials here either. Had the same black breaks though.

Re: Weird: The Al Yankovic Story (2022, D: Appel) - S: Daniel Radcliffe

Oddly enough when I had my adblocker on it showed the time bar onscreen at each commercial break. That annoyed me more than just letting the commercials play so I turned the adblocker off and it then played seamlessly still with no commercials. I’m done with Roku for various reasons but will watch some other Roku Channel stuff this way until they catch on and “fix” it- though it seems the people there in general don’t know what they’re doing, working out in my favor this time.

I can't recall if I saw any commercials now. I may have to watch again.

Had plenty of commercials on my Roku.

Al was on Bill Maher’s podcast and confirmed there should be commercials. You guys are lucky.

Re: Weird: The Al Yankovic Story (2022, D: Appel) - S: Daniel Radcliffe

After Roku dumped private channels I’ve had no reason to use their unit anymore. I mainly use the NVidia Shield with Kodi to watch streaming services without their annoying interfaces and SmartTube for YouTube with no forced ads, then Apple TV for Apple Music and casting from my iPad which was how I watched this.
