Re: Movie Theaters

National Cinema Day

National Cinema Day will return this Sunday, August 27, for a second edition, the nonprofit Cinema Foundation announced today, with discounted admissions for all movies at over 3,000 participating theaters with 30,000 screens. Tickets for all shows, all formats will be no more than $4. Concession discounts are up to each exhibitor.

At last year’s event — which was held later, on the Saturday of Labor Day weekend — tickets were $3. In the midst of a slow Covid-recovery for exhibition, it brought 8.1 million people to theaters and grossed $24 million – up 8% from the previous Saturday. It was the highest-attended day for movies in 2022.

New openings Cinema Day weekend include Gran Turismo: Based on a True Story, Golda, The Hill, Retribution and Bottoms. They’ll join current box office hits Barbie, Oppenheimer, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem and Sound of Freedom; recent releases like The Super Mario Bros. Movie and Disney’s The Little Mermaid Sing-Along, Haunted Mansion, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny and Elemental; and re-releases of Jurassic Park (3D), American Graffiti, Greta Gerwig’s 2017 Lady Bird from A24. The helmer of Barbie is now the highest-grossing female director ever at the domestic box office.

“Following the rousing success of the first annual National Cinema Day, we welcome everyone to join us for the communal experience of one of America’s favorite past times,” said Jackie Brenneman, president of The Cinema Foundation, which was launched by the National Association of Theater Owners in early 2022. She said almost every exhibitor and distributor with movies in the marketplace is participating.

“We’ve been working on this for a while,” she told Deadline. Last year’s event was put together quickly and took some indie distributors and arthouses by surprise, although almost all participated in the end. “We tried to learn from that. To have conversations much earlier, give notice much earlier.”

Last year, the box office was struggling and Cinema Day was “to thank moviegoers for coming back,” Brenneman said. This year, it’s booming (albeit sailing into uncharted waters of ongoing Hollywood strikes) and the event “is about celebrating the moviegoing experience and how important movie theaters are to our communities.”

“Movies have the power to bring us together to share in the joy, the thrill and the magic of a great story told on the big screen,” said NATO CEO Michael O’Leary, who took the org’s helm from longtime chief John Fithian earlier this year.

According to a Fandango survey of 2,000 U.S. ticket buyers after last year’s Cinema Day, the top five reasons consumer said they’d likely buy tickets for the next one included: affordable pricing; ability to see a specific movie they’d wanted to see; time with loved ones; being a big fan of a particular franchise; and a fun weekend activity. Fandango is an event sponsor.

I did this last year and saw the extended cut of Spider-Man and it was nothing but screaming kids. Vowed never to participate again

Re: Movie Theaters

Regal has a new $5 Mystery movie tonight. I'm probably going to check it out. The site says it's Rated R and 117 minutes. Some on X think it's Freelance with John Cena. But the running time doesn't match. I would love it to be Thanksgiving, but I highly doubt it's that long.

Maybe The Killer with Michael Fassbender? That's R and listed as 118 minutes.

Re: Movie Theaters

I wouldn't put much stock in the exact run time advertised because it's usually not accurate. Freelance is likely the film.

Not a horror movie. It’s Freelance.

Was about to buy a ticket too. I enjoy John Cena, but I'll wait until November to see it.

Re: Movie Theaters

AMC Theatres is now doing a mystery movie program like Regal. It's called "Screen Unseen" and is also $5

https://www.amctheatres.com/events/amc-screen-unseen

The next one is next Monday November 6th. I believe A-List covers this too. Only clue is it's PG-13 and 109 minutes.

I'm going to guess it's Next Goal Wins

Re: Movie Theaters

Regal did this a year ago, but this weekend they are also doing $4 Screen X tickets. Selection is limited. Top Gun Maverick again, Spider-Man No Way Home and Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part 1.

Re: Movie Theaters

I wanted to take a second to plug See It on 16mm to everyone living in California: https://www.instagram.com/see_it_on_16mm/

I went to see the John Carpenter mystery movie last night and it turned out to be Dark Star, which a lot of people in the audience hadn't seen.

He travels the State, playing everything from A-list films to his sub-brand, Trash Mex. Awesome experience with a very respectful crowd that was super into it.

The infamous Nicole Kidman ad at AMC Theatres has finally been updated. Will roll out Friday. Apparently 3 versions were filmed.

Next thing I want to hear from AMC is that they're reducing coming attraction trailers.

Re: Movie Theaters

I forgot all about this . . . but when we went to see Mean Girls, I saw my first "Pledge." A teenage girl behind stood up, placed her hand over her heart, and recited the whole thing along with the commercial. It was fucking glorious. Of course, my wife and the vast majority of people in the audience had no idea what I was laughing at or what she was doing.

Re: Movie Theaters

Showing the same trailer for months on end is torture and a great way to get people to hate your theater or stay away from it altogether. When I worked at Regal we ran this for a long time right before every movie, I think I can still recite it:
