Re: Movie Theaters

Good thing A-List membership covers the cost of at least one of those seats.

I also noticed that my AMC theater's non-premium screens have been upgraded to AMC Laser. Apparently this had started back in October, when all of AMC's would start getting new equipment from a new vendor or something.

Re: Movie Theaters

There are going to be a lot of people who buy a cheap seat then move to an at-the-time unattended better seat, then someone comes in and they have to get them to move. That'll be fun for all parties. One of the best things about assigned seats is not having to sit through the previews if you time it right.

Re: Movie Theaters

Lucky me here in KC, MO. How did we get lumped in with New York and Chicago? I'll have to see how things go moving forward. Really makes me miss Alamo Drafthouse even more.

It'll be interesting to see the pricing difference. Just in time for Titanic re-release.

Re: Movie Theaters

There aren't any AMC theaters in my area, so I don't have a dog in this fight... yet. Hopefully the theater chains in my city don't follow suit. I'd be totally cool if they stopped at just discounting the shitty seats to lure in extra business. But I'm a "smack dab in the middle of the theater" guy.

This just makes waiting for streaming that much more of an attractive option.

Re: Movie Theaters

AMC is already way overpriced for me and my family. Adding in more costs isn't going to entice me to go. Fortunately, we still have some smaller theaters around for family nights, and an Alamo for an occasional date night with the wife.

Re: Movie Theaters

Looking at seating map, it's not every showing. Looks like evening shows. Preferred Sightline is $1 more. The Value Seats up front are $2 less.

Re: Movie Theaters

Oh, so it's an actual discount on the value seats (or did they raise the price on all seats to give that 2 dollar discount?)

Re: Movie Theaters

I never paid enough attention to keep track of prices. I wouldn't doubt they raised prices slightly in preparation to this pricing change.

Re: Movie Theaters

It's also odd, because unless the evening shows are just naturally more expensive (matinee pricing?) you'd be paying less for that front row seat in the evening?

Re: Movie Theaters

The only time I've sat in the front row was Empire Strikes Back because that was all that was available and I didn't want to wait for another showing. Had kids with me.

Re: Movie Theaters

There's nothing like a movie starting while two guys right in front of you are arguing about seats and an underpaid usher has to come in with a flashlight to figure it out.

You can't really replicate that kind of moviegoing experience at home.

Re: Movie Theaters

Adam Aron, AMC's CEO, just got greedy after the Meme stock saved his company from bankruptcy. Otherwise, AMC would be in the same position as Regal/Cineworld.

I think most people, especially in this forum, are only casual movie goers and only go to 1-2 movies a month at most and all this is going to do is drive those types of people away who don't subscribe to A-List. And Premium screens, which this seems geared to, are already quite expensive. After a pandemic, which nearly killed this industry, they should be trying to drive in more customers, not trying to take advantage of them.

Re: Movie Theaters

At this point I'll only go to the Alamo. I want silence from the crowd and no cell phones at all and my local AMCs and Regals can't guarantee that. So charge away, AMC and cause even more disruptions in your theater. Sounds like a fantastic idea.

Re: Movie Theaters

I think movie theaters would be better off trying to sneak an extra $1 or $2 for that popcorn and pop combo than upping ticket prices. Going to the theater is an entertainment choice that actually gives me pause these days. My setup at home is a premium one and as long as we're willing to wait a few months, I'll choose that over the $100 experience for what may or may not be worth $100.

Re: Movie Theaters

I'm glad I don't have to mess with AMC to go see Titanic next weekend as my closest theater just listed their showtimes.

Glad my local theater is no longer an AMC. Thatís some bullshit with tiered pricing.

Re: Movie Theaters

I don't even sit in the middle anymore. I do the aisle seats closest to the exit in case I have to go take a piss.

I'm waiting for theaters to make you swipe your credit card before the restroom doors open.

How is someone an "asshole" for coming to sit in the seat they bought a ticket for? I get the guy's suggestion is silly, but the responder sounds like just as big an idiot.

Scott needs to slow his roll.

And if Jeff is hurtin' for $1, I'll send some $$ his way. Or start a GoFundMe for his cheap ass.

Ha, I was just thinking the one quality of life thing I'd like them to add is an intermission for long movies. Well, that and to make their concession stands more efficient, I swear they keep those lines long and people waiting on purpose sometimes.

Re: Movie Theaters

On its surface this appears to be more nickel and diming of the customer (I love the corporate spin that makes it sound like this is actually them serving the customer better), but the more I think about it, the more this just seems like a way to drive stubs/a-list subscriptions.
