The Matrix Resurrections (2021, D: Wachowski) S: Reeves, Moss - The Spoiler Reviews Thread

Synopsis:

From visionary filmmaker Lana Wachowski comes “The Matrix Resurrections,” the long-awaited next chapter in the groundbreaking franchise that redefined a genre. The new film reunites original stars Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss in the iconic roles they made famous, Neo and Trinity.

In “The Matrix Resurrections,” return to a world of two realities: one, everyday life; the other, what lies behind it. To find out if his reality is a physical or mental construct, to truly know himself, Mr. Anderson will have to choose to follow the white rabbit once more. And if Thomas…Neo…has learned anything, it’s that choice, while an illusion, is still the only way out of—or into—
the Matrix. Of course, Neo already knows what he has to do. But what he doesn’t yet know is the Matrix is stronger, more secure and more dangerous than ever before. Dj vu.

Reeves reprises the dual roles of Thomas Anderson/Neo, the man once saved from the Matrix to become the savior of humankind, who will once again have to choose which path to follow.
Moss portrays the iconic warrior Trinity… or is she Tiffany, a suburban wife and mother of three with a penchant for superpowered motorcycles?

Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (“Candyman,” the “Aquaman” franchise) plays the wise and worldly Morpheus who, as always, serves as a guide to Neo while also fulfilling his own greater purpose on a very singular journey of self-discovery.

Jessica Henwick (TV’s “Iron Fist,” “Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens”) plays the hacker Bugs, the proverbial white rabbit on a mission to discover the one who sacrificed himself for humankind--and willing to take any risk necessary in search of the legend she idolizes.

Jonathan Groff (“Hamilton,” TV’s “Mindhunter”), plays Thomas Anderson’s business partner, a slick, confident corporate type with insouciant charm, a disarming smile and an eye on the bottom line--everything Mr. Anderson is not.

Neil Patrick Harris (“Gone Girl”) plays Thomas’ therapist, working closely with his patient to understand the meaning behind his dreams and to distinguish them from reality.

Priyanka Chopra Jonas (TV’s “Quantico”) plays a young woman with a wisdom that belies her years and an ability to see the truth, no matter how murky the waters.

And Jada Pinkett Smith (“Angel Has Fallen,” TV’s “Gotham”) returns as Niobe, the fierce General who once fought for the survival of Zion and who now sees to the welfare of her people with a familiar fire in her eyes, despite a sense of disbelief and suspicion upon Neo’s return.

Lana Wachowski directed from a screenplay by Wachowski & David Mitchell & Aleksandar Hemon, based on characters created by The Wachowskis. The film was produced by James McTeigue, Lana Wachowski and Grant Hill. The executive producers were Garrett Grant, Terry Needham, Michael Salven, Karin Wachowski, Jesse Ehrman and Bruce Berman.

Wachowski’s creative team behind the scenes included “Sense8” collaborators: directors of photography Daniele Massaccesi and John Toll, production designers Hugh Bateup and Peter Walpole, editor Joseph Jett Sally, costume designer Lindsay Pugh, visual effects supervisor Dan Glass, and composers Johnny Klimek and Tom Tykwer.

Warner Bros. Pictures Presents, In Association with Village Roadshow Pictures, In Association with Venus Castina Productions, “The Matrix Resurrections.” The film will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures. It will be in theaters nationwide and on HBO Max via the Ad-Free plan on December 22, 2021; it will be available on HBO Max in 4K UHD, HDR10, Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos (English only) on supported devices for 31 days from theatrical release.

Not exactly glowing praise but a guy I watch on YouTube seemed to enjoy it and called it the best sequel in the franchise. I may need to revisit the trilogy as its been a long time since Ive watched the films.

Looks like the reaction to this one is going to be a lot like Ghostbusters: Afterlife - you're either going to love it or hate it.

Well, most people didnt care much for the sequels. How bad could this one possibly be?

From what I have read, this new one is different and pretty good compared to the other two.

Is she no longer a filmmaker? They are both so brilliant. V for Vendetta, Matrix, kinda trilogy. Creating new things like James Cameron and all his new fangled stuff…

Works on a Showtime series called Work in Progress, which is a stark change from previous endeavors

V For Vendetta was not directed by the Wachowski's.

Adapted from a comic book isn't a stretch.

I think that's probably right.

Looks to me like Resurrections is going to go all meta on us, and I'm kind of indifferent about that.

Liked the first movie; thought the two sequels were overwrought and pretentious -- and not in a good way.

69% so far which is way better than I thought, out of 140 reviews so far. So it seems way more watchable than the previous 2.

Some of the reviews Ive read seem to think it is very hit or miss, somewhere between 2-3 out of 5 stars. Well, I have HBO already so Ill probably watch, not sure if I can force myself to watch the third one again tho.

I'm 2 minutes in and I'm already annoyed how incompetent the agents are.

"So deja Vu and so obviously wrong"
"Why use old code to mirror something new"
A little too on the nose there?

They were terrifying in the original, and now just fodder.

The husband's name is Chad?

This is the second Warner movie this year I've seen where Warner Brothers is responsible for the plot happening in the movie lol

So it changed a bunch since I last popped in. Gotta say, didn't really enjoy it

I loved it. The spoilery prediction video posted in the other thread wasn't quite right, but a good effort. :)
Waiting for the credits to end now, as I heard there's a scene.

Edit:  perfect

I LOVED the first 30 to 40 minutes of this movie...had it kept that vibe (which I'm guessing a lot of you may react negatively to) throughout, I would have really liked this one...sadly, after that first act, the movie loses all its energy and it turns into just a bad action film...so bad that I really struggled to get through the final hour. Huge letdown after what I thought was a great start.

The movie does a great job of setting up an almost Total Recall-like scenario for Neo/Anderson, but never follows through on it - it just throws up its hands about halfway through and says "okay, this is really happening - it's not all in his head." Had they had the guts to keep the "mind f$&k" going throughout and left everything ambiguous, this might have been a GREAT movie...but it seems like they decided, okay, we had our fun, now viewers are going to expect an actual Matrix film - which, sadly, is where the movie turns completely dull and repetitive. Two stars from me.

If this was going to be a parody or dark comedy, then I think this film works ...otherwise it's a complete clusterfuck.

Ghostbusters/No Way Home---- the right way to utilize nostalgia. This film relies heavily on it and that is simply because it's a bad film....period

It tries to be clever, but in the end it just seems like fan-fiction and it was just written to give Trinity powers/make her The One.

What a complete waste. So many other possibilities/potential that could've been used to resurrect this property.

It was an action movie with poor action.
tried to be deep and thoughtful but was kind of shallow and dull.

This is what a Matrix movie feels like if WB revives it 20 years later without the creative force of the original..the fact that it had that creative voice (somewhat) is kind of baffling to me.

The first half made it feel like WB was making fun of the Matrix movie and it's fans.

That was ok. A bit too meta. I did like the ending though.

Jonathan Geoff plays an amazing evil person.
