Re: Everything Everywhere All At Once (2022, D: Kwan & Scheinert) S: Michelle Yeoh

I never expected this to hit me emotionally as it just did.
The first 30-45 minutes I laughed and was trying to figure out what was happening. For the next 45 or so minutes I was still trying to figure it out, but was still enjoying the ride. The last 15 are what pushed it over the top.
This was outstanding. I’m not a fan of most A24 releases, but this is head and shoulders above them all.

I was re-watching this on Delta's movie service while flying yesterday. I forgot about the dildos, that scene is awkward in that particular situation

Didn't make it to the butt plug battle.

Weird to re-release it in theaters for 8 minutes of outtakes/bloopers. You would think they are already on the digital and physical media. I already saw it twice in the theater. Just waiting for the 4K UHD disc to go on sale.

Disney did the same stunt with Toy Story 2.

Just caught this last night. Is it too late to get Ke Huy Quan in the next Indiana Jones movie?

Funny that you should ask.

Rented this last night. Man, what a wild and trippy ride. I'm with everyone else though, too long. You could shave a good :30 off this and not affect the characters or story in any way.

Looking forward to revisiting it again down the line.

I purchased the 4K disc blind on Black Friday. Loved every minute of it and just had to watch it again the next day.

One thing is for sure...the movie is way too long...it sort of outstays its welcome/should have been about 45 minutes shorter. Still, given the regular diet of reboots and sequels, this was a nice change of pace, although it's still quite similar to all the multiverse stuff we've been seeing in the MCU, with a dash of The Matrix thrown in.

B+ from me.

30 minutes in I was thinking this is kinda meh and not really what I expected.

45 in I am thinking what the hell how is this getting all the praise it is? It is stupid as hell.

90 minutes I am like fuck there is an hour plus maybe left? I was not distracted either.

I finished it but would never recommend it. Nor watch again probably. I may but ugh.

I am glad a movie like this is making bank however the next type of this I may get into.
I finally saw this and have to agree with both of these comments. It was the most batshit bonkers movie I've ever seen. I liked it, didn't love it. And yes, it was just way too long.

I will still be shocked out of my mind if this doesn’t win Best Picture.

There just isn’t anything else. It’s not close IMO.

I love the movie, and have no doubt it will be nominated, but I don't think it will win. I think too many voters will have trouble with the pacing, or think it's too silly. I'm still waiting for the official list of nominees, but my gut tells me the academy would probably select Banshees for Best Picture over EEAAO.

I would LOVE to see EEAAO celebrated with a Best Picture win. It's the kind of ambition and originality the Academy should be rewarding. But I expect them to reward something stodgier but still challenging, like Tar. I could get behind a Banshees win, but with far less enthusiasm than EEAAO.

Yeah, I thought it was a unique ride and a blast but I can't see old people voting for a movie with an anal plug fight and a dildo fight.

EEAAO led all films with 11 nominations.

I think it's a buttplug fight away from being a real contender.

Re: Everything Everywhere All At Once (2022, D: Kwan & Scheinert) S: Michelle Yeoh

Happy to see Michelle Yeoh nominated, too (not unexpectedly, of course). Not to mention most of her co-stars. She's officially, by far, the most successful export from Hong Kong's golden era to Hollywood now – and has been for a while to these eyes – something her fellow stars from there could never really sustain, including one-time box-office draw and current CCP stooge Jackie Chan. It certainly can't hurt her profile, thought that's already pretty high, with a lot of potentially cool shit in the hopper: the next three AVATAR movies, Kenneth Branagh's next Agatha Christie adaptation, WICKED, TRANFORMERS, various animated shows, the AMERICAN BORN CHINESE adaptation, etc. She does have one Mainland China movie coming up – yet another NEZHA movie, yaaawn – but I suppose she's gotta represent there, too, even if the projects are pretty forgettable.

I dunno what I saw when I first watched some of this, but watching again with no distractions, it’s pretty damn good and love the love it’s getting. Where’s Short Round been? He’s great, Yeoh, of course. Just a quirky, incredibly fun movie.

^ He was in some Netflix Goonies knockoff a year or two ago. Besides that, I hadn’t seen Quan in years.

And prior to that, he had a decent role in a Hong Kong film called SECOND TIME AROUND in 2002. And prior to that, he was in the lead in a Taiwanese/HK action film I've long wanted to see called RED PIRATE, from the director of a couple of Jackie Chan's 70's films and partially shot in Quan's home country of Vietnam, in which he seems to have been cast as a kickboxing, gun-blasting ass-kicker. Lost to the ages, I guess.

It's almost sad that it took the better part of three decades for filmmakers to come along who could showcase so much of his range in a single film. So much wasted potential, but surely this film has corrected that (I see he's already set to appear in the next season of LOKI). I particularly liked his look and performance in the Wong Kar-wai style 'film industry' universe.

I've noticed a comment here and there on the interwebs (mostly YouTube as I recall) claiming Jackie Chan would've been ideal for Quan's role, or even Yeoh's role (!), but THANK GAWD that never happened (and not only because of my distaste for what Chan actually represents nowadays). He would've made this an entirely different picture, and nowhere near as compelling. Chan plays Chan, always (FOREIGNER excepted). Both Yeoh and Quan have infinitely more range than him. On the commentary, though, the Daniels reveal that they did deliberately steal from Chan for Quan's fight with the security guards near the elevator as they try to leave the tax office, which was definitely a highlight.

Also surprised to learn that veteran Hong Kong movie henchbabe Michiko Nishiwaki was Yeoh's stand-in for this film, and even appears for a split second getting punched by her in a couple of the universes. Probably best known for the hallway fight with Sibelle Hu in MY LUCKY STARS back in the 80's:
