Disney's Strange World (2022, D: Hall/Nguyen) V: Gyllenhaal, Quaid, Young-White, Union, Liu

Disney has announced its next animated feature will be titled “Strange World.” The original action-adventure is scheduled to debut around Thanksgiving 2022.
The studio on Thursday also shared concept art and plot details, but stopped short of revealing the film’s voice cast. “Strange World” centers on the legendary Clades, a family of explorers whose differences threatened to topple their latest and most crucial mission. On Instagram, Disney Animation teased that “Strange World” “journeys deep into an uncharted and treacherous land where fantastical creatures await.”
Don Hall, whose credits include “Big Hero 6” and “Raya and the Last Dragon” is directing “Strange World.” He says the movie is a nod to pulp magazines, popular fiction from the first half of the 20th century that was printed on inexpensive wood pulp paper.
“I loved reading the old issues of pulps growing up,” he said. “They were big adventures in which a group of explorers might discover a hidden world or ancient creatures. They’ve been a huge inspiration for ‘Strange World.'”
Qui Nguyen, who co-wrote “Raya and the Last Dragon” with Hall, is returning to co-write the screenplay for “Strange World. Roy Conli (“Big Hero 6,” “Tangled”) is producing.
Though the release calendar could change before then, “Strange World” is currently set to premiere in theaters on the same day as “The Fabelmans,” a semi-autobiographical drama about director Steven Spielberg’s upbringing in Arizona.
Disney has come to own Thanksgiving at the box office, with family-friendly animated movies like “Frozen,” “Coco,” “Moana” and “Frozen II” becoming massive commercial successes around the holiday. This year, Disney opened “Encanto,” a musical fable about a magical Colombian family, around Turkey Day. By COVID-19 standards, “Encanto” is faring well at the box office with domestic ticket sales at $60 million and global revenues nearing $120 million.

Definitely seems like a decent attempt at adding in Studio Ghibli fantasy elements in a Disney movie. Should be a fun experience.

To be honest, I am kinda' getting tired of CGI animated flicks and would love to see more returns to classic animation.

In theaters November 23!
The feature film introduces a legendary family of explorers, the Clades, as they attempt to navigate an uncharted, treacherous land alongside a motley crew that includes a mischievous blob, a three-legged dog and a slew of ravenous creatures. “Inspired by classic adventure stories," said director Don Hall, “‘Strange World’ is an original animated adventure/comedy about three generations of the Clade family who overcome their differences while exploring a strange, wondrous and oftentimes hostile world.”
The voice cast includes Jake Gyllenhaal as Searcher Clade, a family man who finds himself out of his element on an unpredictable mission; Dennis Quaid as Searcher’s larger-than-life explorer father, Jaeger; Jaboukie Young-White as Searcher’s 16-year-old son, Ethan, who longs for adventure; Gabrielle Union as Meridian Clade, an accomplished pilot and Searcher’s partner in all things; and Lucy Liu as Callisto Mal, Avalonia’s fearless leader who spearheads the exploration into the strange world. “Strange World” is helmed by Don Hall (Oscar®-winning “Big Hero 6,” “Raya and the Last Dragon”) and co-director/writer Qui Nguyen (co-writer “Raya and the Last Dragon”), and produced by Roy Conli (Oscar®-winning “Big Hero 6,” “Tangled”).

I went to see this the Saturday of its opening week, there was only one another person in the theatre, another man in his mid-40s. I thought the movie had a lot of cool visuals, but somehow didn't come together in any way that felt engaging. It might actually have been the "there's no villain" thing. While having no villains in real-life is great, it kind of kills the potential for drama or excitement in the movies.

Disney basically sabotaged their own movie. There was really no ad or promotional campaign for this movie. The actors didn't even go out and help promote it. Maybe it could be good? I don't know. There was really nothing to help encourage me to see it. Even at AMC, which I frequent, I don't think I even saw one trailer for this. I guess I'll try to see this on Disney + since I don't have to pay for it and see if it's any good.

I don't think I even knew about the movie until I started seeing articles about it bombing.
The movie had little to no promotion or branding. I'm not the audience for this movie, but I usually know about whatever new animated movie is coming out from Disney just through cultural osmosis. (Though I don't think I heard about Moana until I saw the toys in Walmart while I was shopping.)

There weren't really any new movies this week so I used an A-List reservation to see it tonight, in what turned out to be a private screening. The visuals were sometimes interesting and the story was mildly entertaining, nothing more than that.

Caught up with this since it dropped on D+ yesterday. Curious to the reaction by the general public of 1) the interracial couple 2) their openly gay son and 3) how people are parasites to the world they live on. Interesting concept, a little bit up UP's adventure with some Adventures thru Inner Space and Osmosis Jones thrown in.

Caught this on Disney+ with my kids. It’s got some ok visuals but was pretty vanilla overall. I feel like I’ve seen the exact same father/son story in about a dozen other movies.
I also didn’t find the “twist” that
The interracial couple and gay son stuff didn’t bother me. I thought they were incorporated well and just played “normal,” like it should have been. Anyone who would be offended by it should have already been boycotting Disney for…reasons.

I thought the diversity angle was more interesting than the main plot line. Like I expected
So yeah, pretty dull overall.

If Jake Gyllenhaal was not in this there would be no reason to watch it

This was a weird movie. And I'm not talking about the in movie universe. It had all the elements in there for a typical big Disney hit. Had pretty nice visuals. An interesting story. An emotional story involving family and finding oneself. But for some reason or other it just didn't really come together. I'm not sure if it was the whole (extremely predictable, my wife called it within the first couple minutes of them being in the underworld) twist that fell flat. The relationships between family members not having the emotional gravitas it was desperately trying to grasp, or the whole strange world just not being strange enough. It just didn't really hit it's stride. I think this will be a lot like Pixar's Good Dinosaur. Not bad by any means but utterly forgettable with exactly zero cultural relevance.
Between Stranger Things and Strange New Worlds I also didn't think calling it Strange World helped it any. It was also oddly familiar in tone with Lightyear but without the known IP to back it up so it's no wonder why it was an absolute and utter commercial failure.
