Silent Night (2023, D: John Woo) S: Joel Kinnaman

EXCLUSIVE: A bountiful American Film Market just got even better. Buyers are buzzing about Silent Night, the first U.S. action film in decades to be directed by the iconic Chinese filmmaker John Woo. Joel Kinnaman will star in an film that will tell a loud action tale, without a word of dialogue.

Sources tell Deadline the story is basic, as a normal father heads into the underworld to avenge his young sonís death. The film is in negotiations to be financed by Capstone. John Wickís Basil Iwanyk, Erica Lee, Christian Mercuri and Lori Tilkin are producing and Capstoneís Ruzanna Kegeyan is overseeing with Joe Gatta. Other casting is underway.

The prospect of a Woo return is as intriguing as his intention to make has buyers sparked up. After directing the stylistic Hong Kong action classics from A Better Tomorrow and The Killer to Bullet in the Head and Hard Boiled, Woo came to Hollywood and directed action films that included Broken Arrow, Face/Off and Mission: Impossible II. Woo returned to making his films in China after the 2003 Ben Affleck starrer Paycheck.

Woo is repped by ICM Partners and Hansen Jacobson; Kinnaman by WME and Magnolia.

Sounds gimmicky but Iíll give it a shot because of Kinnaman and Woo.

Production has begun. Woo's first Hollywood movie in close to 20 years.

re: Silent Night (2023, D: John Woo) S: Joel Kinnaman

Scott “Kid Cudi” Mescudi (Don’t Look Up) is the last addition to the cast of the action-thriller Silent Night, from iconic action director John Woo (Face/Off), John Wick producers Thunder Road Films and Capstone Studios. He’s set to star alongside Joel Kinnaman, Harold Torres and Catalina Sandino Moreno.

The film currently in production in Mexico City centers on Godlock (Kinnaman), a father on a mission to avenge his young son who was tragically caught in the crossfire of gang violence on Christmas Eve. Shot and nearly killed while in pursuit of the murderers, Godlock vows to avenge his son by any means necessary. Mescudi will portray a detective named Dennis Vassel.

Robert Lynn penned the screenplay. Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee are producing for Thunder Road, with Christian Mercuri for Capstone, and Lori Tilkin for A Better Tomorrow Films. Capstone’s David Haring, Joe Gatta and Ruzanna Kegeyan are exec producing alongside Mike Gabrawy and Will Flynn for Thunder Road.

“Based on what we’ve seen from set so far, it’s clear that Scott has a presence and gravitas that is incredibly captivating,” said Gatta. “He is a powerful addition, and perfect complement, to this stellar cast.”

Woo’s daughter is running an IG for him.

(but I guess IG links still aren't working on here?)

Re: Silent Night (2023, D: John Woo) S: Joel Kinnaman

Lionsgate has plopped John Woo’s next action movie, Silent Night, on December 1.

Silent Night is an acquisition by Lionsgate.

That’s the post-Black Friday weekend frame, which typically sees genre pics pull in a young audience. Currently, 20th Century Studios/Disney has the Jeff Nichols-directed The Bikeriders on that date. There’s also MGM’s expansion of Emerald Fennell’s Saltburn.

Silent Night is Woo’s first American theatrical movie since 2003’s Paycheck, starring Ben Affleck and Aaron Eckhart. The new film, which uniquely has no dialogue, stars Joel Kinnaman, Scott Mescudi, Harold Torres, and Catalina Sandino Moreno. Robert Archer Lynn wrote the script. The pic is also produced by John Wick producers Thunder Road Films.

The gritty revenge tale follows a tormented father (Kinnaman) who witnesses his young son die when caught in a gang’s crossfire on Christmas Eve. While recovering from a wound that costs him his voice, Kinnaman makes vengeance his life’s mission and embarks on a punishing training regimen in order to avenge his son’s death.

Producers are Christian Mercuri, Lori Tilkin deFelice, Basil Iwanyk, Erica Lee and Woo. In addition to Thunder Road, Capstone Studios and A Better Tomorrow Films are the production companies.

I'll be interested depending on the trailer. The premise sounds crazy in a good way. I immediately thought it was a remake of silent night deadly night.

The trailer is currently playing in front of Saw X and online via EW: https://ew.com/movies/silent-night-t...joel-kinnaman/ (there may be cellphone versions). The action looks good, but the no dialogue aspect seems like it is going to be a stretch for this type of film.

Yeah I saw the trailer last week when I watched Saw X. The action does look good, but not sure about having no dialogue. If it's like 80-90 minutes tops, then maybe I'll be okay. But, any longer would be a huge stretch.

It seemed contrived in No One Will Save you, even though that was kinda the perfect movie for it, so I doubt it will work better here.

Re: Silent Night (2023, D: John Woo) S: Joel Kinnaman

Lionsgate posted the trailer now:

In Theaters December 1. Starring Joel Kinnaman, Scott Mescudi, Harold Torres and Catalina Sandino Moreno. Written by Robert Archer Lynn. Directed by John Woo.

From legendary director John Woo and the producer of John Wick comes this gritty revenge tale of a tormented father (Joel Kinnaman) who witnesses his young son die when caught in a gang’s crossfire on Christmas Eve. While recovering from a wound that costs him his voice, he makes vengeance his life’s mission and embarks on a punishing training regimen in order to avenge his son’s death. Full of Woo’s signature style, Silent Night redefines the action genre with visceral, thrill-a-minute storytelling.

That looks decent. I was under the impression there wouldnít be any dialogue at all in the movie. If itís only Kinnaman who doesnít speak, I think itíll be a lot less gimmicky than I thought.

Hmm, looks cool enough. I get him not talking (and that's a neat premise). But I'm not sure how believable it is that no one around him talks either.

That's my issue... at least based on the trailer. I'll reserve judgement on if it works until seeing the actual film though.

I hope so. I was just watching and thinking "man I hope they let John Woo do his thing".

Some directors should be "conventional" and "traditional". And some should "indulge" in everything they're allowed to, without producers standing in the way. It's disappointing when an auteur director is restrained by a producer.

I still enjoy revisiting The Killer, Hard Boiled, Broken Arrow, Face/Off, Mission Impossible 2.

funny how in an action movie with "no dialogue", the writer gets higher billing than the director (at least in the card at the end of that trailer)

This looks really good. The overuse of cgi is a shame, but Iím officially excited for this.

I'm going to be honest, normally I wouldn't even bother to watch the trailer for a movie like this but...........It's John Woo so I had to and it looks really good to me.
