The Super Mario Bros. Movie (2023) - Illumination - V: Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor Joy, Jack Black
I'm curious to see how this turns out. It has to be better than the live action film, right . An animated Mario movie from the Despicable Me and Minions folks.

Re: Animated Mario movie (Illumination, Nintendo)
As a Nintendo fan and of Mario games I’m curious about it at least. In some weird way as bad as the live action movie is I kind of like it in a so bad it’s good way but the series definitely has potential for a better film to be made. Glad this one will have Miyamoto involved as that should help steer it in the right direction.

Illumination Entertainment also did The Secret Life of Pets and Sing:

I mean, they already have a game together.
What, those are Rabbids? But what's the difference?
Seriously, though, I doubt the minions will show up except in the Illumination opening logo or something.
I'm kind of surprised we've gone a long time without an animated series or an anime from other nintendo properties, besides Kirby.

Mario’s cartoony voice in the games is fine in short bursts, but if you’ve heard that one voicemail message that Charles Martinet did, with Mario speaking for a minute, it sounds ludicrous. Hopefully they find a solution in beteeen that and Brooklyn tough guy.

God no joke. His voice doesn't work for longer than 5 second sound bites, and even that is pushing it. But he doesn't usually talk much, he usually gets talked to.

Super Mario Bros (2022) - Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor Joy, Jack Black
This looks like a disaster in the making. Of all people, why Pratt as Mario?

Why any of those people? Although I think Jack Black as Bowser will be really fun and I could see Charlie Day being OK as Luigi.

I mean it's an animated movie. If it were live action, sure, disaster (the money alone to get that cast could be disastrous) but as voices for an animated film, eh fine. The guy who does the Mario sound effects for the Nintendo games is involved in some cameos as well, Miyamoto said.

Cast seems really off to me. I mean I like them all pretty much, but I just can't fathom any of them as the characters they're cast for.

They could have gotten Hank Azaria to voice Mario. After all, he’s voice this guy before
Seriously though, someone like Matt Leblanc could easily voice Mario, sounding Italian American as he’s supposed to be. Chris Pratt is not famous for his range in voice or acting.

Also, judging by his voice acting in the Lion King as Pumba and in the Simpsons, Seth Rogen can’t stop sounding like a high as fuck stoner when doing animated work

I mean stoner DK sounds fine to me. Honestly the one that will take getting used to is Anya Taylor Joy because I can't imagine they cast her in a voice role for her to not use her natural accent.

What an uninspired cast, save for Jack Black.
I mean, Sonic got Idris Elba to play Knuckles, you think they could stretch out a little.

I know the 1990's one was such a failure. But I would have liked to see them do live action in 2021. Just to take another stab at telling some kind of story. Hopefully this one has a cohesive story. The live action one is admirably strange.
Zelda cancelled at Netflix was disappointing too. Seems like there would be endless material in a Zelda cinematic universe. An easy companion to fantasy movies like Lord of the Rings and His Dark Materials. The concept of different eras and endless adventures is pretty much built in reboots and anthologies.

I’m guessing this will follow along the same lines as The Lego Movie. It’ll live or die on a heavy dose of nostalgia and will cover most of what people think of when they think of Super Mario Bros.
I’ll call it now and say at the end we’ll find out it was all a dream as the camera zooms out to Mario sleeping in his bed dreaming about saving the princess.

And I just cannot see a live action Mario movie working, like at all.

I mean, I loved the first Lego Movie, I thought it was great that they didn't go the "easy" route when it comes to this kind of tie in, so if this follows along those lines I'd be thrilled. That's the absolute ceiling though, and the floor is far, far below.
And I just cannot see a live action Mario movie working, like at all.
