Shang-Chi was entirely shot with IMAX cameras and was screened entirely in IMAX 1:90:1 aspect ratio.

Watched this yesterday. I was expecting something mediocre based on all the reviews I read, but I was pleasantly surprised. It was a pretty good flick. Definitely seemed different than the normal MCU stuff, but that wasn't necessarily a bad thing. The fight sequences were legit. The ring powers were very cool how they could be used as different types of things. Overall, I would out this in the upper half of marvel movies.

Agreed, the fight scenes were all badass. The bus fight and the fight on the scaffolding were both top notch!

For those interested, on Disney +, there is a 66 minute behind the scenes documentary on the making of Shang-Chi. It's episode 6 of the Assembled series, which is all making of documentaries.

Re: Shang-Chi & the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021, D: Cretton) -- S: Liu, Leung - The Spoiler Reviews Thr

I watched it last night on Disney+. I liked it. The cast is very good, and the action scenes are well done. I thought the climactic battle was a bit CGI-heavy for my liking, but that's kind of the nature of the beast (so to speak) with superhero movies these days.

The family dynamics were interesting. I felt like there should have been at least a little time spent showing the father changing and softening when he fell in love. It just seemed like an abrupt change from ruthless bad guy to good(?) guy with a family to bad guy again, and all of that was in flashbacks. In the post-credits scene, it looks like the sister has taken over her father's gang. Is she going to be some kind of crime lord? The actress who played Shang-Chi's mom was beautiful, she reminds me a lot of the actress who plays the Madam in Warriors. Loved Michelle Yeoh as the aunt and I hope she will return in future Shang-Chi movies.

I was not expecting Kingsley as 'The Mandarin' to show up again in this, but it worked well because he took over the comic relief role and allowed Awkwafina's character to be more serious and have a little more depth.

Overall, I really enjoyed it and will be watching it again soon.

This was such a fun movie, really well done. I think I was almost more excited seeing Tony Leung in an English speaking role, but all of the actors across the board were great. I’m glad Awkwafina had a regular role for once, rather than a comedy relief. My kids and wife really loved the movie. I’m looking forward to see what they do with this in the MCU.

Going back and watching the first post credit scene again.. makes me wonder if and how it ties into Eternals and if it's part of the Dr Strange reshoots...

I have and she’s great in that. That was the first time I relived she had range in addition to her comedy sidekick thing. She can hold her own.

She has some nice moments in Nora from Queens, too.

Just watched it, thought it was great. Refreshing to see an almost all Asian cast in a Marvel movie. Hope there are more Marvel movies like this.

Re: Shang-Chi & the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021, D: Cretton) -- S: Liu, Leung - The Spoiler Reviews Thr

The Marvel studios "Assembled" documentary on the making of this movie is great. Just finished it. They thoroughly cover the production and casting of this movie. They even cover how COVID shut down the production and how they managed to get up and running.

Gosh, this movie took over 1 year to make. Simu Liu started training and pre-production began in September 2019. They filmed through March 2020. COVID happened and they managed to resume in July. Liu finished his final scene in late October 2020 and the rest of the crew wrapped in November 2020. The documentary covers all that. They also showed how they the bus fight scene. it was all filmed on blue screen in Australia. Pretty much the entire movie was filmed there.

These Marvel behind the scenes documentaries are totally worth your time if you care about the filmmaking process. Liu has some a great and friendly personality on camera as he's being interviewed.

I've good news for you. Except the all Asian cast most Marvel movies are pretty much the same.

Shang-Shi is an entertaining movie, but come on Marvel. After more than 20 movies you could at least get a little bit innovativ. Having an all Asian cast is fine, but like an mostly black cast in Black Panther, it's just casting. That in of itself is not "new", if you tell the same 3 stories over and over again. An origin story where the hero gets his powers in the last 10 minutes of the movie. Come on, that's just lazy.

Finally saw this on Disney+ and loved it. Like others have said above, I wasn't expecting much and was pleasantly surprised. The story was good, and character development was interesting, and the fights scenes were top notch.

Saw this on D+ over the weekend as well... thought it was pretty good overall. One thing I am not looking forward to is Akwafina being a "superhero" or even a tag-along to Shang-Chi... why?

The "first" movies are origin stories. That formula isn't followed by the sequels or the team-ups. The characters have to be introduced to the audience. And for the record, Black Panther started with all his powers.

So did the latest Spider-Man reboot that introduced the MCU version. Already had his powers.

Re: Shang-Chi & the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021, D: Cretton) -- S: Liu, Leung - The Spoiler Reviews Thr

We can do this with all the character-led characters:

Iron Man - discovered his powers
Captain America - given his powers
Thor - started with his powers, lost some of them and then got them back
Black Panther - started with his powers
Black Widow - started with her powers
Hulk - given his powers
Guardians of the Galaxy - started with their powers
Dr. Strange - discovered his powers
Spider-Man - started with his powers
Shang-Chi - started with his skills, got the rings at the end
Eternals - started with their powers
Captain Marvel - started with her powers (flashbacks to when she got them)
Ant-Man - given his powers

Hulk already had his powers at the start of Incredible Hulk. It's not a sequel to Ang Lee's Hulk, which isn't part of the MCU.

She's "hot" right now? She's comic relief, that's fine.

Saw this in the theaters in 3D and watched again over the weekend on Disney +. Still enjoyable but feel it was better suited for 3D.

Akwafina has grown on me over the last few years. I find her amusing for the most part. I don’t know if/what her character is like in the comics but I think the MCU is keeping their options open with having her go along with Shang-Chi at the end. She could be Shang-Chi’s Pepper Potts by being around as a helper but not necessarily go along for the adventures or she could be the “regular” person who the audience can relate to if she does go on adventures. I also think of done right, she could have a pretty good story arc from being an unambitious slacker at the beginning to finding her purpose in life and becoming heroic. There’s plenty they could do with her character.

Akwafina's character, Katy Chen, does not exist in the comics (at least not yet). She was created for the film.

We watched this on Disney+ on the weekend and really enjoyed it, especially my 12 year old daughter who thought it was great (she's a big MCU fan). It was wonderful seeing Tony Leung in a big Hollywood film, and he was expectedly great. The only disappointment for me is that I was really hoping it would be Fin Fang Foom imprisoned behind that portal, but I guess not.
