If that was the case, then Wandavision, Falcon & Winter Soldier and Loki would have bombed in streaming ratings. They didn’t and went on to become some of the highest streaming shows in history.

What I can tell you is that many in the audience have little faith on the DC films that WB puts out. Many felt burned by WW84, and the fact that the company has no long term vision and is in the habit of throwing shit at the wall and see what sticks, makes people think twice about going out there to watch another DC film

I just think the movie just had shit timing. I would have seen it in theaters a couple months ago, but won't venture out right now to entertain myself.

The rise of streaming series came at the perfect time. The technical advancements that the Mandalorian made to streamline production (the Volume) and high profile characters coming to the "small" screen for stories that really don't fit the movie format may not spell the end of the movie as the pinnacle of visual arts, but if they don't start putting out better product than Solo and Rise of Skywalker, they may find people staying away for reasons other than covid.

Of course, I'm only speaking of effects movies, but the biggest things in other genres, such as Handmaid's Tale and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel are not showing at your local cineplex anytime soon either.

I don’t like or watch superhero or comic book movies much at all, but I checked this out.

I don’t know much of anything about the characters but it was fun. Probably helped for me that it was a hard R and not a PG-13.

it was good but too long. The first 45 mins was good and final 30 was good. I took a break for about 3 hours and almost didn’t finish it.

but I enjoyed the starfish stuff.

I’d go 6/10.

Watched this on HBO Max with my girlfriend last night. I liked it pretty well, but I didn’t completely love it like I wanted to. I think I had it hyped up in my mind, and with all the positive reviews I expected more from it.

I would say that it starts out really good, and the ending is good. There are parts in the middle where it drags quite a bit though. Specifically the Harley stuff felt out of place. I almost feel like she could have been left out of the movie.

The film felt a bit overlong, and like maybe parts could have been cut out to tighten it up. The humor was also hit and miss in my opinion.

Another iffy aspect to me is that while I liked that the film went for it with its R rating at times it was a bit too much maybe. Like the film was trying really hard to see how much it could get away with.

I liked most of the core team members. King Shark was a standout as expected. Polka Dot Man was cool. Also liked Bloodsport and Ratcather 2.

Overall a fun movie for the most part. Not sure how much replay value it’s going to have for me.

I’m the odd man out. I’m not sure why people think King Shark was the standout. He didn’t seem to do anything particularly interesting. He was just…there. With the exception of his excitement when he saw the little squid creatures in the giant aquarium, Stallone didn’t bring anything special to the character.

I also didn’t think Polka Dot Man was very interesting either. He really didn’t really do anything until the last 15 minutes of the movie or so. His picturing his mother was funny the first time but by the third time was tired.

Some of the characters were interesting. Others weren’t. Some of the humor was funny. Some wasn’t. Some of the violence worked. The first part and the last part of the movie was good. The middle part dragged. It all evens out to just an alright movie.


The running joke in the second half of the movie with “Milton” was the best gag of the movie. I also enjoyed “the guy in the chair” yelling “Oh shit, we got a Kaiju up in this bitch!” when he woke up to see all hell breaking loose.

Highlights were King Shark and John Cena. I've always thought he was a shitty actor, but damn, when his lip was quivering pointing the gun at Flag, or maybe it was Ratgirl...

James Gunn thinks he's a better talent than he really is tho, and it was evident here.

As much as I liked the movie, it was way too overhyped. The beginning was good but if I'm going to be honest, Deadpool 2 did it better. But I did like the characters for the most part. King Shark was a little disappointing. It would have been funnier if he was more like Drax. Instead I feel like Stallone was a complete waste.

Gunn's style really shines though and I thought the pacing was pretty good. But in the end, I can't really say it's a whole lot better than the first film. Maybe a couple more viewings will change my mind.

I think the article makes some good points especially #4 and #7. I don't think superhero fatigue plays any factor.

I liked it. It's odd tone reminded me a lot of Mystery Men, more than Guardians or other DC movies. Overall fun. It didn't really hit any big emotional notes with me. Maybe the climactic bit with Ratcatcher.

It's pretty much all James Gunn and his crew. He takes plot points and turns them upside down. I wonder if he is a really annoying contrarian in real life. Like many things - if I were watching film after film like this, I'd get tired of it. But it's a nice change sometimes.

The so-so box office is a shame. No idea how it all works out with streaming. I watched it streaming. Probably the second time I opened HBO Max in the past month. So you could say I paid $10 to watch it. I'm guessing the 'big release on HBO Max' thing will end after they deliver what was promised (maybe it ends with Matrix 4).

Truthfully I think it’s that I wanted to like the character, but you’re right. He was slightly underwhelming. A bit like the film itself. I thought he would be the fun Groot type character. He was okay in parts, but the character did fall a bit flat.

Polka Dot Man is somewhat the same. I wanted to like him, and I did, but I can see the point about him not being the most interesting character.

Agreed. It’s a very uneven movie in my opinion. I really hoped James Gunn would give these characters and DC a boost, but it seems like maybe he tried a bit too hard, and missed the mark.

Well Snyder fans are still living in 2017 feeling vindicated in 2021 that JL “was always good”. This new Suicide Squad didn’t offer anything new to that DCU and they’re still running it all the old failed way. They have a lot more to worry about then Gunn’s version failing. I think the superhero movie genre is getting old when it comes to the DCU. Having Snyder running it again will only destroy it even more. Meanwhile the MCU is still talked and analyzed with several years of movies and shows planned that will probably all be very successful.

I have seen the Snyder cut of JL and while it was a lot better than the theatrical, I really didn't care for the route he was taking with the story. I think everything from the Snyderverse era needs to more or less be put in an "elseworlds" status.

I'd say 4 and 6 are the biggest reasons, and are tied together because people, myself included, thought it was an excuse to make another Harley Quinn movie, which no one wanted. But not only is covid a factor, Space Jam came out three weeks ago, which in our new delta variant timeline, is an eternity. The fact that it it made within $5 million at a time when people are starting to mask up and make contingency plans for the next shutdown shows it was a box office draw. I think it's going to have legs. Would be interesting to see stats on repeat viewings on HBOMax, if they even release such data.
