She Said (2022, D: Maria Schrader) S: Carey Mulligan, Zoe Kazan
EXCLUSIVE: Nearly four years after New York Times reporters Megan Twohey and Jodi Kantor broke the bombshell Harvey Weinstein sex scandal report, Hollywood is ready to tell the story of how these two reporters persevered to break this game-changing story. Universal Pictures is prepping She Said, a drama based on the New York Times bestseller She Said: Breaking the Sexual Harassment Story That Helped Ignite a Movement. Uni is in negotiations with Carey Mulligan and Zoe Kazan to star as Twohey and Kantor. The film is set to begin production this summer and will be directed by Unorthodox director Maria Schrader from a script by Oscar-winner Rebecca Lenkiewicz.
Everyone in Hollywood remembers where they were when the first story ran on October 5, 2017 when Kantor and Twohey revealed an array of alleged sexual harassment and assaults against women by The Weinstein Company co-chairman and indie film mogul Weinstein, misdeeds that dated back decades. The article included details of hush money paid to cover up the sexual indiscretions, and first-person accounts by actresses accusing Weinstein of non-consensual sexual indiscretions. The article would not only lead to Weinstein being fired by the TWC board and eventually found guilty and sentenced to 23 years in prison for rape but also spurred the #MeToo and #TimesUp movements that are still making major impacts across the world while also completely changing the landscape of Hollywood forever.
The thrust of the film isn’t Weinstein or his scandal. This is about an all-women team of journalists who persevered through threats of litigation and intimidation, told in a procedural manner like Spotlight and All the President’s Men.
In 2018, Annapurna Pictures and Plan B Entertainment optioned the rights to She Said under their co-production deal. Oscar nominee Megan Ellison will executive produce for Annapurna with Sue Naegle. Oscar winners Brad Pitt, Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner will produce for Plan B.
Universal’s Vice President of Production Lexi Barta will oversee the project for the studio.
Universal giving the greenlight to the production makes sense given how Studio Chair Donna Langley has been at forefront at pushing for more female fronted projects. Given the female starpower in front of and behind the camera, this certainly falls in line with what she has been trying to do with her slate over her tenure as Universal Studio head.
Mulligan and Kazan starred in Ian Rickson’s Broadway production of The Seagull in 2008. In 2018, Mulligan starred in the critically acclaimed film Wildlife which Kazan co-wrote and produced. This is the first time they will appear together on screen.
Mulligan is coming off yet another critically-acclaimed performance in Promising Young Woman, which earned her an Oscar nom. She is currently filming Johan Renck’s Spaceman opposite Adam Sandler before she jumps into She Said. She’ll follow with Bradley Cooper’s Maestro in 2022. Kazan recently starred in HBO’s critically-acclaimed limited series The Plot Against America, the Coen Brothers’ Ballad of Buster Scruggs and Oscar-nominated The Big Sick. She Said reunites the pair on their third project.
Maria Schrader has been on major studio execs’ radar following her critically-acclaimed work directing the Netflix limited series Unorthodox, for which she won an Emmy. Lenkiewicz is a British playwright and screenwriter who authored Her Naked Skin, which was the first original play written by a living female playwright to be performed on the Olivier stage of the Royal National Theatre. She co-wrote the Polish-language film Ida that won the 2014 Oscar for Best Foreign Film.
Mulligan is represented by CAA, Julian Belfrage Associates and Jackoway Austen Tyerman Wertheimer Mandelbaum Morris Bernstein Tratner & Klein; Kazan is represented by UTA, Jennifer Konawal, Jackoway Austen Tyerman Wertheimer Mandelbaum Morris Bernstein Tratner & Klein; Schrader is represented by UTA, Players, Independent Talent Group and Circle of Confusion; and Lenkiewicz is represented by Casarotto Ramsey and Associates Ltd. Kantor and Twohey are repped by Anonymous Content and The Cheney Agency.

The trailer makes this look a little heavy-handed but I’ll check it out if the reviews are good.
It’s interesting that Brad Pitt is a producer on this considering the story of him threatening to Kick Weinstein’s ass if he messed with Gwyneth Paltrow in the 90s.

That looks pretty good. I watched the Ronan Farrow docuseries on HBO and recognized some of the characters. Not sure if I need to see this in a theater, but I always love Mulligan so I hope she gets some acclaim for this as well.

Aside from the two journalists, are they mostly changing names in this? In the IMDb credits, it doesn't seem like there are many folks playing 'real name' people. Looks like there's a brief shot of "Weinstein" in the trailer, but no one (so far) credited with playing him (?). Always thought Jeff Garlin was a dead ringer, or Jordan Gelber from Dark Horse, but casting like that probably would've made the movie too much about the perpetrator rather than the victims and the writers.

If you haven't seen it yet, Curb S10E1 deals with that very topic.

Saw this today. It was pretty much just a very straightforward telling of the journalist's experience telling the story. Nothing flashy, but that isn't a bad thing. Great performances from Kazan and Mulligan. Samantha Morton has one scene in the film and she knocks it out of the park. Interesting to see some of the real-life actresses participate.
Maybe it will get some award recognition.
This didn't make much money at the BO this weekend. $32mil budget for this seems like way too much.

I'll add that the (actual) audio used of Weinstein & Gutierrez was particularly chilling.

Watched this tonight. What a great film. I would put it way up there with "All the President's Men". I thought it was riveting. One of 2022's best.

I watched this last night. It was decent, but nothing great.
It really didn't offer much that I didn't already know - and the stuff I did learn from the film wasn't earth shattering or anything. This would've worked just as well as a documentary... or maybe even better.
Spotlight does a much better job at taking real life investigating/reporting and making it a film.
Not surprising that James Austin Johnson (SNL) played Trump's voice in this. His impersonation is so accurate that it actually hurts its comedic effect on SNL.

Great movie and that they used similar voices and people like Ashley Judd. Boy, she’s had work done. Donald Trump actually said that. Not all together, but they pieced it so well. Very powerful story. Started the whole movement. Would have liked to actually see Paltrow, but still great. Like Spotlight. Which I loved. Oooh, it’s good.
