Exactly it's like 75 foreign Mary Hart's and Ryan Seacrest - types who schmooze with celebrities and lunch with their publicists and then hand out gold trophies to drunk movie stars on TV and we treat that award like it's the second most prestigious accolade in an actor's career.

Sucks since this was a more exciting show than the boring Oscars and you had hosts like Ricky Gervais and Tina and Amy and they did not show 90 minutes of technical awards before handing out the major prizes.

How exciting is it to hand out meaningless awards that are chosen by 75 foreign suck-up entertainment reporters with questionable taste?

All the awards are meaningless.
The Oscars aren't any better than the Globes. Half the members don't even watch either any or all the movies (especially foreign language films), and the ones who do vote go often vote for safe bets or friends or based on some agenda, etc. The whole thing is dumb... just the industry patting themselves on the back.

I still think the Oscar (especially acting directing and screenwriting Oscars) still carry some cachet. Winning an acting Oscar is a stamp of validation. And it was a big deal back when Spielberg and Scorsese didn't have one yet. Oscar winners are still recognized as such for all future projects, identified as an Oscar Winner in trailers for their new films and such. Check out write ups about the cast of Don't Look Up and you will immediately see they discuss the fact that it has five Oscar winners in the principle cast as a sign of how impressive the cast is.
Compare that to the Golden Globes whose winning status is completely meaningless.

I'm not ashamed to admit that I've seen the Golden Globe Awards like 1 time in my life. However I have seen Miss Universe several times throughout the years.

They can be serious career-boosters for up-and-comers, as well, or expose younger audiences to talent that they're unfamiliar with. We saw this with Bong Joon-ho and I think Jane Campion will get similar treatment this year.

I do also think that while the Oscars make a LOT of screw-ups, they do have pretty defensible winners most of the time.

Because the point of a message board is to communicate. You choose to do so in an incredibly obnoxious way, which is weird since your posts have always seemed sincere.

I have no doubt it's meaningful for the people involved because it seems to get them extra work, and audiences may invest more money in a film that has some Oscar clout behind it.
But I no longer think it means much anymore. It's too political, too American-centric and there's just not enough film knowledge from Oscar voters. It's really hard to take seriously.

The Globes had some memorable speeches from people who got the lifetime achievement award and nobody watched when Gervais and Tina and Amy hosted?

Because in the past 5 years we've seen a Mexican and Korean born director both win best picture and director, with a Chinese born director winning last year. Moonlight- Super American, Super Political.
Unless you're one of those people who think diverse means political.

You've seen my post saying it's too American-centric and the members of the Academy don't watch foreign-language films - so of course I don't have issues with foreign films getting recognition. In fact, that was my biggest complaint with the Oscars - so many great films and performances from foreign films getting ignored. I probably watch more foreign films than most on this forum. Yes, the Oscars are getting better at it in recent years - but they're still being very selective with foreign films.
By political, I mean they'll jump on the hot topic of the month/year and give more recognition to a film because it deals with that hot topic. Or snub a film because of an actor/director's personal crap.
I also think it's dumb to give someone an award over more deserving people because of their "body of work" nonsense - or making up for getting snubbed in the past.

Can you cite an example? I can't really think of one except maybe Moonlight. And that was a damn good film, even if I liked LA LA Land more.

I get that. But without that, Paul Newman, AL Pacino, Martin Scorsese would be Oscar-less. And I don't think that would have been good for the Academy.

And even those three didn't get their Oscars for bad movies or performances. The competition for Scorsese and Newman wasn't that strong either. I can see both as winner, although personally I would have chosen James Woods and Clint Eastwood instead. Al Pacino gave a strong performance, but all the other nominees were even better. Those body of work Oscars are pretty rare, though. Last year the Academy got it right, when they honored Anthony Hopkins and didn't go for the popular choice.
