Ryan Coogler Signs on to Write and Direct 'Black Panther' Sequel (Exclusive)
The filmmaker behind the $1.3 billion hit is expected to begin penning the follow-up next year, say sources.
Ryan Coogler is going back to Wakanda.
Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter the filmmaker behind Marvel’s landmark Black Panther has quietly closed a deal to write and direct the sequel.
While the move was expected — Marvel wanted to keep the creative team as intact as possible and a sequel was never in any real doubt — the timing was always unclear.
Black Panther, centering on T'Challa, the king of a fictional African country, was an outsized success both commercially and critically. The movie, which starred Chadwick Boseman as the titular hero, grossed $700 million domestically and more than $1.3 billion worldwide, and is also considered a contender for Oscar consideration. The movie became a defining cultural moment and touchstone, especially for the black community.
In the weeks prior and after to the movie’s February release, both Marvel and Coogler’s camp were hounded about when a sequel deal would be inked. Typically, a filmmaker is more than willing to quickly sign on for a follow-up and a studio is eager to snap up a key piece of talent in the lead-up to or right after a successful opening. But Coogler’s camp shook off the peer pressure and took its time in making a deal, which occurred under the radar some time ago.
Sources say the plan at this stage is for Coogler to write next year with an eye to start production in either late 2019 or early 2020. Marvel and parent company Disney, however, have not made any official announcements about Marvel's slate of movies beyond the release of the next Avengers movie in May 2019 and a Spider-Man: Homecoming sequel in July — and plans could shift.
Coogler is developing the drama Wrong Answer with his frequent collaborator and Black Panther star Michael B. Jordan. He is also executive producing LeBron James’ Space Jam sequel and acts in the same capacity on the upcoming Creed 2.
He is repped by WME and Cohen & Gardner.

So... Disney has the X-Men back now. Do you think they introduce Storm in Black Panther 2? I vaguely recall Coogler saying he wanted to use her. Maybe that was just clickbait during press for BP.

I have high hopes but low expectations for this one. People lost their minds over the first one, but I think it’s one of the weaker MCU entries.

The sequel was sidelined due to the sudden and unexpected death of star Chadwick Boseman and a planned March 2021 production start waylaid as filmmaker Ryan Coogler and Marvel tried to navigate grief and the need to move forward.
Multiple sources tell Heat Vision that Marvel is now readying Black Panther 2 for a shoot that will start in Atlanta in July and last for upwards of six months. Mexican actor Tenoch Huerta, who was one of the stars of Netflix’s Narcos: Mexico, is in talks to play one of the antagonist, according to sources.
Though 2020 is a year without Marvel, the studio is gearing up for perhaps its busiest year yet.

All they have said in reports is that Letitia Wright will have a bigger role and they won't do a CG Chadwick Boseman.

Feige just announced in the Disney presentation that T’Challa/Black Panther will not be recast. The movie is still coming in 2022.

I would think they partially adapt the storyline from the comics, when Shuri becomes Black Panther. T'Challa could die a hero and Shuri takes on his role as Black Panther. M'Baku could be a possibilty, too, but I think Shuri is the obvious choice.

I think they'll end up using a lot of unused and heavily manipulated footage from earlier films, a la Carrie Fisher in the Last Skywalker. Which looked pretty bad, imo.

They don't have to. The movie starts with a cold open. Masked Black Panther dies sacrificing himself and nobody has to see his face. Shuri takes on his tasks as Black Panther while coping with her loss, she has to live up to her new responsibilities.

I wonder if Lupita's Nakia will become Black Panther. Still, I wish the part was recast. As much as I love Chadwick's interpretation, the character itself is bigger than him. Is a symbol for the black community and the legacy of T'Challa should continue on.

I do hope they don't call it Black Panther II and instead give it some new moniker like they did with Captain America and Thor sequels because it won't feel like a true sequel no matter what they do.

Disney had an opportunity to do something extremely similar with Leia in the last Star Wars, but they instead chose to essentially write and shoot an entire film around the left over bits and pieces of Fisher's performance from the previous two movies. It worked so well the first time, I can't see why they wouldn't try it again here. /s

maybe it'll be a prequel set in the early 1960's where young T'Chaka meets four costumed adventurers who took a fateful rocket ride.

I'm not saying Chadwick Boseman won't appear at all, but I would be surprised if T'Challa is alive after 30 minutes into the movie.

Yeah, IF they do set the Fantastic Four in the 1960s, a Black Panther prequel set in that time period would be cool. Have T'Chaka face off against Doctor Doom.
