I watched this movie a lot as a kid as well. I also didn’t catch the (obvious) racial tones. Of course I was I was in my late teens before I caught the joke that the kid was called “Master Bates” throughout the whole movie too.

I was watching "The Deer Hunter" for the first time in 25 years. During the wedding party, the wedding singer (Joe Grifasi) dances with John's date; he repeatedly grabs her backside. John is teased by his friends about this and he builds up a head of steam. Cazale then walks over and punches the girl. It's meant to get a chuckle because you were expecting him to hit the guy. There are no repercussions for this, though Cazale is presented in the film as a bit of a jerk.
