Red Rocket (2021, D: Sean Baker) S: Simon Rex

A24 has acquired the North American rights to “Red Rocket,” the next film from director Sean Baker.

“Red Rocket” is currently in postproduction and is Baker’s first film since 2017’s “The Florida Project,” which was also released by A24 and went on to score an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor for Willem Dafoe.

The new film stars Simon Rex (also known as Dirt Nasty) as Mikey Saber, a washed-up porn star who returns to his small Texas hometown, even though no one there really wants him back. Bree Elrod and Suzanna Son also star.

Baker wrote “Red Rocket” with his frequent collaborator Chris Bergoch. The director of photography is Drew Daniels. Sean Baker, Alex Coco, Samantha Quan, Alex Saks and Shih-Ching Tsou are the producers on the film, while Jackie Shenoo serves as executive producer.

A24 picked up the rights to “Red Rocket” from FilmNation Entertainment, which holds global rights to the film.

“I am very excited to be reuniting with the wonderful team at A24 who will once again be bringing my film to US audiences,” Baker said. “As a champion of the theatrical experience, I am thrilled A24 will give my film a theatrical release with their talent for bold marketing and distribution savvy. My gratitude goes out to FilmNation and the ‘Red Rocket’ cast and crew for helping me bring the film to fruition.”

Glen Basner, CEO of FilmNation Entertainment, added, “Sean is making another bold, original film and I am thrilled that it found a home in the U.S. with A24.

Is that the Simon Rex from MTV years ago?? Also known as Dirt Nasty?

I remember there being controversy about him when he was on MTV for shooting porn, so not much of a stretch here

That could be why Sean Baker cast him.

I hope this isn't based on a South Park gag.

"5 minute ovation" at Cannes (I always call bullshit on these but right on). Kind of a creepy plotline (middle aged old dude courting a 17 year old girl)

As I was reading the synopsis, I was basically thinking Rex was playing himself - as opposed to playing *with* himself, which is what he did in those early videos.

Drops in theaters this weekend!

Looking forward to seeing this as I love Sean Baker's work.

So far, the closest screenings to where I live are in San Francisco.

Hoping more theaters pop up eventually as I really loathe going to San Francisco for most activities nowadays.

They are supposed to add more theatres next week and then be wide by Christmas.

I was considering going into NYC to see this and Licorice Pizza today. But, like you, I do not like making a haul to a city. I’ll just wait.

Can't blame you there, for a city that had a lot of post pandemic gloom and doom predictions, everything was fucking slammed last weekend.

Man... Rex plays such a charming, sociopathic, asshole. Great performance. This isn't as strong as Baker's The Florida Project, but it could be a great companion piece to his film Starlet. I hope he keeps making these types of films about locations/demographics that you wouldn't normally see a film about. Definitely worth checking out.

Man, I'm still kicking myself for the year I was on the programming team at a film festival and we rejected an early (debut?) film by Baker...

A few theaters in the Sacramento, CA area started listing screenings for this film, so I bought a ticket to see it on X-Mas Day.

Mileage-wise, it's the same distance as driving to San Francisco but with 100-times less stress.

Saw the film yesterday and I agree with everything that you mentioned.

Loved the film and its performances, especially from Simon Rex & Suzanna Son.

One thing I really appreciate about Sean Baker is that he seems to get the most out of all of his actors, especially since he likes to cast first-time and non-professional actors.

I thought Simon Rex sounded familiar. I remember him quite a bit from MTV back in the day.

Had no idea he was an actual porn star.

This looks wildly entertaining

I enjoyed this one but it hasn't dethroned The Florida Project from the top spot in my ranking of Sean Baker movies...on certain days, I'd put Tangerine at the top. I spent about the first half of Red Rocket trying to decide if Mikey was actually worse than Halley from TFP. I think Mikey took the crown when
Spoiler:
he saw Lonnie getting called out for posing as a vet and walked away. Then Mikey gives Lonnie shit for his false claim despite living off of a bunch of lies since he got back to Texas City. That was the straw breaking the camel's back...Mikey of course goes on to do considerably worse things.

I think Halley at least had some awareness about the crooked things she was doing and knew she wasn't going to get away with it whereas Mikey seems to feed off how far his lies have gotten him and totally expects to get back to his former life. At least Halley was doing shitty things because she had to care for Moonee...Mikey is totally self-centered and has deluded himself into believing some of the nonsense he spews.

I give Simon Rex full marks for confusing the hell out of me for a while. It's blatantly obvious he's really bad news for anyone he gets close to, but he has this easy going charisma that's hard to resist. After the first half hour or so, I wasn't sure if I should be rooting for him or hoping he'd crash his bike into a telephone pole.

From the previous Baker films I've seen, I figured this one wasn't going to have a pat ending. I was in a fair bit of suspense wondering how it was all going to end, though.

Still, this didn't need to be over two hours. As much as I enjoy another tour through a part of America I've never seen before, I thought there were definitely parts that could've been edited out to give the movie better focus.

I'm hoping to catch Baker's pre-2010 movies in the next little while.

Spoiler:
I think this is the dark underbelly of Starlet. Jane is the exact opposite of Mikey: when she found the money in the thermos, she wanted to get to know Sadie to get a better understanding of who she is. If Mikey had found that much money, he would've buggered off back to L.A. without ever looking back. Your calling him sociopathic is bang on...he's easily Sean Baker's least likable protagonist, at least in the movies I've seen. I was at first amazed that he bothered to say anything at all to Lexi about leaving. I guess he felt he owed her that much after taking him back and allowing him into her bed.

I'll be curious to hear what you think of Take Out, the film I mentioned rejecting for a film festival. But like I said, it cost $3000, when we had a short (~15 minute) film that covered the exact same topic but had a budget of $20000 and it showed.

This is on A24’s screening room this evening at 9 pm eastern. You buy tix and can watch at home.

I believe it’s everywhere for home viewing on Tuesday, the 8th.

wow. what a performance by Simon Rex. it was like a documentary of that type of life. his character, his speed talking, Ritalin needed character was mesmerizing to watch and that last shot was just heartbreaking. you saw in that shot, everything he has gone through in his entire life. if Academy voters had any sense whatsoever, this and Cage for Pig should have been recognized.
just amazing. i mean pedophile, but you still felt for him, i think. at least i did. just an amazing single performance. i don't even remember anyone else except for him and Strawberry, but he owns this movie. is this based on a little reality? where was he originally from, MTV something show? is he a washed up pornstar like his character? anyway, just amazing single character/actor performance.

Older sociopathic guy chasing a teenage girl in rural America, with use of the song Musica Poetica by Carl Orff in the trailer. Looks like a much different film, but the Terrence Malick influence seems to be there.

This review is going to scare Decker off. STOP IT!

Simon Rex does not play a pedo in this. She turns 18 in 3 weeks.
