Re: Disney/Pixar’s Luca (2021, D: Casarosa)

Just watched. Very obviously rushed. Needed a lot more script work. It’s like a first draft, albeit a very good first draft. The kind a teacher or editor would read and say “very good, but rewrite the entire thing”.

And the subtext is about as subtle as a sledgehammer. Yes, they’re just kids and there’s nothing sexual. But the comparison is as obvious as the day is long. And there are LGBT kids who may be comforted by this, and for them I hope it helps not just them but also any parents who may not be as accepting at first.

I think this is the very first Pixar film that bored me. I guess they can't all be gems.

This movie was “meh” in terms of Pixar quality. Animation was amazing as usual, but Alberto cockblocking Luca all the time was just annoying . Let the bro go to school with Guilia, which I’m glad he finally did.

Guilia’s Italian/English dialogue was catchy and makes me want to learn Italian haha beautiful language

It's weird, I didn't really "get" those kinds of undertones when watching the movie the first time, mainly because he still technically ends up with the girl. And I guess that fact caused a lot of LGBT people to be up in arms.

But Luca doesn't get the girl, he's not even interested in her. He's interested in learning, knowledge and information. She just happens to be the catalyst for that and a way for him to go to school. And he very much thought Alberto was going to go with them and was heart broken he chose to stay behind.

Giulia is seen as that female friend of the gays. No real physical or romantic attraction, often there to help and support.
Maybe its because I have a lot of gay friends and a lot of female friends that fall into that 'friend of the gays' profile that it seemed rather obvious to me.

Yeah, there was no romantic vibe between Luca and Guillia that I saw (even accounting for their age). She was the friend and gateway to learning. It was all Luca and Alberto.

You know, I posted that I wasn't overly impressed with this, but I can easily remember how the look of it made me feel. A sleepy little fishing village with lots of pasta and beautiful hills. Kinda feels like one of those movies where you become more interested in something happening off to the side than the main plot. Like a story about having to make a big haul of fish to save the village from foreclosure but there's secretly a curse on the surrounding area.

It's the least complicated story out of all the Pixar films. It's about acceptance with a very small, singular set piece (the fishing village).

My family loved it. About the only gripe I had was ripping of Flint Lockwood's dad's design from Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. Too similar for my tastes.

That's actually kinda cool. My teens love Luca so that might be fun on the giant screen.
