I've seen the trailer three times at the theatre now, and I'm still not sure what to make of this :lol: It shows a lot of different visuals, but I have no idea what the story or even the tone is going to be. The trailer brings to mind Charlie Kaufman, The Truman Show, and The Wizard Of Oz... but something tells me that's all misleading.

Although I will definitely make an exception and see this in a theater.

This isn’t going to do well at the box office. It will be available at home within a month or so.

Just watched it. BEWARE OF SPOILERS. If you’re in any way interested in this just go see it. I’m still wrapping my head around it but right now I’d say I like it about as much as Midsommar (that could change) which I have always liked more than Hereditary. To me Hereditary was terrific and powerful until the “seance scene”, soon after which we start seeing spirits and ghosts floating around the house and hiding up in wall corners. 🙄 I will never understand how some people get affected or scared about stories about “ghosts” and “spirits”; it’s so ridiculous and silly to me. Midsommar was superior imo because it was like Ingmar Bergman remaking The Wicker Man as a twisted comedy but to me was still actually horrific because it was entirely GROUNDED in its depiction of sects and Swedish cultism which Aster was actually researching even before he filmed Hereditary.

But anyways, Beau is Afraid is good imo 🙂

I guess the next movie I see in theaters will be Mission Impossible.

The 3 theaters I have near me in the midwest did not get this. Unreal. Must not be on as many screens as I thought.

But, unlike Licorice Pizza, which came out in November and my area didn’t get it until mid-February, I wouldn’t be surprised if A24 drops this on digital after just 17 days, 30 days tops.

It's a limited roll out this weekend, about 962 theaters. I mean, that is still a fairly wide release but way more limited than say Evil Dead Rise which is set for 3,300 locations.

I'm just watching it because it's the weekly IMAX movie but does this really need IMAX? Why not give another movie another IMAX week.

This movie was something else. Not sure what to say other than at times it is so surreal. Beau lives in a feverpitch world of hyperbolic conservative fears of what a city is really like. At times it felt quite oppressive with splashes of humor. It's also right at three hours long.

About to watch it. 2 couples, a guy, and me. I had the whole movie spoiled by an article that didn't mark spoilers so I know the ending but I'm not sure if it's not better that way because I will see the movie differently now.

Yeah, the best thing I can say about it is that it's over :lol: I almost walked out several times. Maybe I didn't understand it.

Saw it in IMax (or Regal LieMax). prime time saturday night and only about 15-20% of theater filled.


I liked Midsommer a lot more.

Showtimes are: Friday at 3:45 pm, Saturday at 12:15 pm and Sunday at 7:30 pm.

After seeing it, I feel like it's biggest influence is Pink Floyd's The Wall album, particularly the "Mother Do You Think They'll Drop The Bomb" song.

Just saw it at my local art theatre with the shitty seats. Look, I'm all for 3 hour movies, but it's unreasonable to have to be physically uncomfortable for the last hour of the picture. Why are we so resistant to intermissions?

Wonderful movie. Pulls you in to give you a panic attack along with Beau. Sits nice next to something like Synecdoche New York. It’s a long, exhausting film and something entertaining in pretty much every moment.

I wanted to love it but I was into in the beginning and up to the scenes where Nathan Lane and Amy Ryan come in and then just got lost.

Probably a simpleton for not appreciating the true artistry of this film.

I watched it over 3 days and not in one sitting.

Phoenix was great as usual and I hope he is doing ok and has no mental issues since he can portray that on -screen so well.

Might watch it again someday

A bonus you get a sex scene with Parker Posey and she shows her tits.

I made this my "long-ass movie" choice for New Year's Eve. Still not quite sure what to think of it. It'll probably go down as another Magnolia in my book; a director who got a little full of himself after making an excellent film, and made one with a lot of subtext but forgot to make it an interesting film on the surface. I admit I was drawn in at first, to the dystopian world Beau was living in, and wanted more clarity on that. Was it truly the society he was living in at that point, or more of a representation of his paranoia? A full movie made in that world (but probably less than 3 hours) would have been great. Instead it just went to places, literally and figuratively, that I cared about less and less.

But did anyone else notice
