Re: Crimes of the Future (2022, D: Cronenberg) S: Mortensen, Stewart, Seydoux

Enjoyed this, mostly because it was entertaining to see Cronenberg go back tackling his familiar bodily obsessions in his typically off-centered style. Dramatically the movie is very dry and overly dialogue heavy, and the events of the plot don't really build momentum in a cohesive or emotionally satisfying way as they did in his earlier films (The Brood, Scanners, Videodrome, The Fly, etc). The performances (particularly Viggo and Seydoux) are solid all around, but the characters are mostly mouthpieces for Cronenberg to spout off his beliefs and theories about our relationship to the evolution of our bodies and how society deals with it on a social and political level. That said, there are enough interesting ideas and provocative imagery to make this project a worthwhile viewing experience even if it feels like it's treading water for much of its running time.

Enjoyed the wonderful performances from Mortensen, Seydoux & Stewart.
Agreed. And the Shore score. Even Scott Speedman put in some good work. Stewart was really great.

A lot of great work in an, as you said, underdeveloped and (as Crocker said) dull film.

That was terrific. While the end credits were rolling, I decided I should treat myself to Shore's Crash soundtrack.

David Cronenberg returns to his roots by exploring the themes of his previous works of body horror, but from a different and more complex perspective.
This took me back to the days of some of his earlier masterpieces: Videodrome, Crash, and eXistenZ. Might be Cronenberg’s best work of the past 20 years.

9/10

Not sure I would call it a good movie but I enjoyed watching it. The one major issue I had with it was with the naked kid. I don't think he is old enough to give consent to something like that. Unlike the Nirvana baby people can identify him. I get they were doing a meta exploitation thing but I didn't think it was necessary. Using the kid in the movie was enough, no need to do it in real life. I hope they get sued for this.

Looked like a dummy to me during that part.

I kind of enjoyed it, being a nice bizarre movie. It took a while, but I was starting to get into the different stories, and then it just ended. Unless I missed something, I don't feel like there was any sort of conclusion to any of the plotlines. I doubt I'll watch it again.
