The Whale (2022, D: Aronofsky) S: Brendan Fraser, Sadie Sink, Hong Chau
EXCLUSIVE: A24 and Darren Aronofsky’s Protozoa Pictures are teaming up for the first time on the upcoming film The Whale with Brendan Fraser set to star and Aronofsky on board to direct.
A24 will have worldwide rights. MacArthur winning playwright, Samuel D. Hunter (Greater Clements) will adapt the film based on his critically- acclaimed 2012 play of the same name. The production was praised by the New York Times and won the Drama Desk Award, Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Play, GLAAD Media Award, Drama League and Outer Critics Circle nominations for Best Play.
“Adapting my play into a screenplay has been a real labor of love for me,” said Hunter. “This story is deeply personal and I’m very thankful it will have the chance to reach a wider audience. I’ve been a fan of Darren’s ever since I saw Requiem for a Dream when I was a college freshman writing my first plays, and I’m so grateful that he’s bringing his singular talent and vision to this film.”
The film marks Aronofsky’s first film since his Paramount thriller Mother starring Jennifer Lawerence. Fraser was most recently seen in the FX limited series Trust.
Aronofsky is repped by CAA and Fraser is repped by Gersh and Brillstein Entertainment.

Reading about the play it sounds like it might be interesting. Aronofsky is a good director too, even though I don’t like all of his films or find some of them hard to watch.

I wonder if Fraser starred in the play, or if this is a Tarantinoesque ego based career resurrection attempt by Aronofsky. (Or maybe he just likes him for the part). Either way, with the shitty year its been for Hollywood, I'm surprised someone is financing a movie with Brendan Fraser as the lead.
Anyway, I like Aronofksy and Fraser, so I'm onboard.

On the outskirts of Mormon Country, Idaho, a six-hundred-pound recluse hides away in his apartment and slowly eats himself to death. Desperate to reconnect with his long-estranged daughter, he reaches out to her, only to find a viciously sharp-tongued and wildly unhappy teen. Big-hearted and fiercely funny, The Whale tells the story of a man's last chance at redemption, and of finding beauty in the most unexpected places.

I've seen the play performed live and it's good, although as you can tell from the description it's mostly two people just talking to each other. Not sure how cinematic it will be.

Could Fraser be a Oscar favorite next year?
Aronfsky and a A24 prodiction could help him with that.

I’m disappointed with TIFF organizers that they only scheduled one more screening of this film besides the Gala, in one of the smaller theatres available. It was sold out before reaching public sale.

Anyway, I really don't feel like spending a bunch of time digging into the history of Brenden Fraser so what's the big deal about his "personal life and what happened to his career" that makes this such a special story? Quick Cliff's Notes, anyone?

From Wikipedia
The physical demands of the stunts and maneuvers Fraser performed in his action and comedy roles eventually required him to undergo several surgeries over a period of seven years, including a partial knee replacement, a laminectomy, and vocal cord surgery.[57] He also badly injured his back when clearing a fallen tree after Hurricane Sandy (2012), requiring surgery and rehabilitation.[citation needed] Fraser alleged in 2018 that he was sexually assaulted by Philip Berk, the then-president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, at a luncheon in the summer of 2003. The assault, his subsequent divorce, and the death of his mother launched Fraser into a depression that, combined with his health issues and a backlash within the industry over speaking out against Berk, caused his career to decline.[53][58]

I know this is an older comment, but yea... that seems to be what this is. I'd assume that Aronofsky and Fraser are friends (going back from when Aronofsky was married to Weisz and The Mummy connection) and this was basically a gift of career resurgence (hopefully).

I don’t see that. You never know if your movie is any good until you’re filming … or till it’s in the can. Filmmaking is a very risky gamble.
They made a movie and apparently it is a good one. As of now. How was Mother received? Noah? The Fountain? Now that I think about it his movies get a lot of love and hate.

Since that’s a big blank spot above the article, I assume the trailer finally came out. Thanks for posting nothing!

I never understood why studios sometimes release tiny 1 minute trailers for an already - completed (and shown in competition) movie. Why not just cut a full trailer?
