The Exorcist: Believer (2023, D: Green) -- S: Ellen Burstyn, Leslie Odom Jr. -- Blumhouse sequel

Blumhouse Productions and Morgan Creek are developing a sequel to The Exorcist for David Gordon Green (Halloween 2018) to direct, Observer has exclusively learned.

It is not yet clear if the project will be his first directorial effort following his delayed sequel Halloween Kills, now set for October 2021.

Jason Blum, David Robinson and James Robinson will serve as producers on the film. Blumhouse is one of the companies behind the successful 2018 legacy sequel Halloween, which grossed more $255 million worldwide, and was the second-highest opening for a horror movie that year. The production company was also involved with Jordan Peele’s Get Out, Spike Lee’s BlacKkKlansman, and the popular Purge franchise.

Blumhouse and Morgan Creek had no comment.

I thought Green was doing Halloween Ends, so this would come after that, right?

That was originally supposed to film over the summer.

There was a Deadline article recently that mentioned an Exorcist movie getting released in 2021. If this is actually happening with Green (and trying to release next year), it’s possible this gets fast tracked and films before Ends in early 2021 for a late 2021 release. Then Ends can film mid to late 2021/early 2022 since that isn’t coming out until 2022 now.

He is a busy dude lately. He’s also directing for the Hellraiser HBO show.

I’m all in on this!

As long as DGG stays away from stupid stoner comedies, he’s a great filmmaker. I think he did a great job on Halloween for the most part so I expect this to be of high quality.

I saw a pretty effective poster for this with “Regan” doing the spider walk down a hallway. I’m not sure if that was official or fan made but it was pretty creepy.

I wonder if this is going to continue in the tradition of their Halloween reboot and ignore all the sequels and bring back Linda Blair and Ellen Burstyn.

And I assume he's still producing and possibly directed episodes for season 2 of Dickinson, which airs next month on Apple TV+

Exactly, so why mess with the original? Blumhouse does good stuff, but stop poaching these classic horror franchises and aim for some original stuff. The Exorcist doesn’t need an update/reboot/“new vision” or whatever the hell he’s attempting.

re: The Exorcist: Believer (2023, D: Green) -- S: Ellen Burstyn, Leslie Odom Jr. -- Blumhouse sequel

William Friedkin tweeted he has zero to do with this a few days ago.

Also, spoiler for the TV show - it was already a direct 8 hour sequel. And about as entertaining as it could be. Some of the imagery was really good. It was as faithful (heh) as it could be while brining it to a modern age of filmmaking (the feel, the effects, the editing are all modern). And it really expanded on the first film.

If you haven't watched the TV show yet, you should. I forget if the second season had any connection to the movie - I remember it being more of a spinoff with the priests.

I’m really not that sold on David Gordon Green as a horror director. He’s attached to all these franchises, but he’s only directed one horror film and it was just okay.

oh I agree. I'm not that interested in this. I just interpreted what he said about William Peter Blatty as "Blatty should be involved in this." Maybe I was wrong.

Green is very hit or miss as a director. George Washington, All the Real Girls, Undertow and Joe are all fantastic films. Everything else is pretty average.

If it's a sequel to The Exorcist, is it a reboot of The Exorcist 2?

I'm okay with that

Green's also done great work on shows like Vice Principals and Eastbound and Down. One thing I like about him is he brings good characterization to genres that normally don't focus on that, like comedy and horror.

The important question: which canon will this follow, "Dominion" or "The Beginning"?

re: The Exorcist: Believer (2023, D: Green) -- S: Ellen Burstyn, Leslie Odom Jr. -- Blumhouse sequel

Universal Spends $400 Million on New ‘Exorcist’ Trilogy Starring Ellen Burstyn, Leslie Odom Jr.

Universal is shelling out an eye-popping $400 million to buy a new “Exorcist” trilogy with plans to screen some of the films on Peacock, its new streaming service. In a coup, Ellen Burstyn, the Oscar-winning actress who first did battle with the devil in the 1973 original, will reprise her role as Chris MacNeil.

David Gordon Green, the filmmaker of the studio’s latest “Halloween” reboot, is directing the upcoming “Exorcist” franchise, which will be produced by Blumhouse. In an ironic twist, Blumhouse made a name for itself producing low-budget horror hits like “Get Out” and “The Purge,” which enjoyed capacious profit margins due to their paltry costs. Streaming has scrambled those economics.

The pact is the latest in a long line of massive deals for movies signed by streaming services. It follows the more than $450 million that Netflix shelled out for the rights to two “Knives Out” sequels, as well as the $125 million that Amazon paid for “Coming 2 America” and the $200 million the e-retailer spent on the Chris Pratt sci-fi adventure “The Tomorrow War.” In recent months, media conglomerates like Disney, WarnerMedia, and Viacom have launched subscription services and the increased competition has led to a boom time for content creators. In this race, Peacock has found itself punching up, unable to land buzzy projects to equal the likes of “The Crown” (Netflix), “Ted Lasso” (Apple TV Plus) or “The Boys”(Amazon Prime), but this deal should help raise its profile.

The first of three planned “Exorcist” movies is expected to debut on the big screen in 2023, with subsequent installments to potentially land directly on Peacock, NBCUniversal’s newly launched streaming service.

“Blumhouse has always experienced incredible partnership from the team at Universal, and I’m grateful to Donna Langley and Jimmy Horowitz for believing in the vision of David’s film and having the foresight to be flexible with distribution, so the team feels top notch support through the lifeline of the film. They’re committed to theatrical exhibition and will also serving streaming viewers well by bringing an exciting franchise like the ‘Exorcist’ to Peacock too,” said Jason Blum, the CEO and founder of Blumhouse. “I’m grateful to be working with David Robinson and the great team at Morgan Creek on this iconic franchise.”

Burstyn will star in the new trilogy alongside Leslie Odom Jr. of “Hamilton” and “One Night in Miami” acclaim. In the first entry, his character tracks down Burstyn’s after his child becomes possessed.

Along with Blum, David Robinson, via his company Morgan Creek Entertainment, will also serve as a producer. Blumhouse’s Couper Samuelson is executive producing.

“There’s no better time to be joining forces with the team at Peacock, reuniting with the great team at Universal and finally getting to work with my friends at Blumhouse, than on this classic franchise,” Robinson said in a statement. “David Gordon Green, Danny McBride, Scott Teems and Peter Sattler have put together a compelling continuation of this iconic tale and I can’t wait to bring this to fans around the world.”

The New York Times first reported the deal.
