Collider hosted an early screening tonight at SDCC and here is the reaction afterwards.
Shame that this is being shown on your TV 1st run.

The story was that it was supposed to be a secret that this was a Predator prequel until the end of the movie. That had to be a very different script than the one that got made, right? Because this looks very much like a Predator film from the get-go.

Really? Seems like they were referring to this as a Predator film from the start... maybe my memory is wrong.
Now Prometheus, on the other hand... they pushed the "totally not an Alien movie" for quite a while, from what I remember... up until there were just too many leaks indicating it really was one, and then the first trailer solidifying it.
edit: I guess my memory is that bad. Could have sworn they tried to distance this from Alien for the longest time, but, at least going by the thread here, it was leaked as such from the start. hmm.
edit2: I was 50% right! Fox tried to pull a fast one, saying that the Alien prequel was dead and that Prometheus was an original story after reworking the script. That was the bit I had remembered. Funny!
Then there's Split... a POS movie that got an even bigger POS sequel. But at least they kept the 'secret' about Split up until the release day.

That reaction seemed more of "Thankfully, it didn't suck." SDCC reactions can be overhyped due to the audience. Since this was at the AMC 20, away from the convention center, maybe the hype might've been lower being so far from Hall H. Plus the director and cast was there for a Q&A.

The director did not want this leaking. I think he planned on calling it something else and then having a surprise ending that ties it to the Predator franchise.

Right. What I meant was, by the time the project was announced (ie: the start of this thread), it was already clear that this was a Predator movie. That's all I was getting at. There was no like secret marketing campaign touting this as something else. That 2016 Blair Witch movie comes to mind as well... originally announced and marketed as its own thing, then after the first 'special' screening, they announced it was really Blair Witch.
I wish Trachtenberg had got his way... would have been interesting to see how that played out, but it looks like they didn't go with his plan.

Out on Friday. Reviews are very positive: https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/prey_2022
A shame it isn’t getting a 30 day theatrical window.

I clicked on the link to Owen G's Variety review and it made me chuckle, you can tell that he really wants to not like the film, but just can't commit to savaging the film because he found it entertaining to watch. It is actually refreshing that a film that for a brief moment in time started to get a bit over-hyped (like the equivalent of a film that folks declare is the next best thing in life compared to Wonder Bread at an event like Comicon) actually seems to have come through. I was already looking forward to this film but reviews like Owen's put me at ease that I am in for a fun watch.
Great to hear that Amber Midthunder does not crumble under the weight of having to pretty much carry a film on her shoulders.

I’m keeping my expectations low, but will be checking this out on Friday. The drinks I have with my fish fry dinner will help.

They totally should have released this in theaters. It probably would.have been a word of mouth hit.

I know the arthouses would have loved to have something to put up that would get asses in seats, and I think the Comanche with subs would have done that perfectly.
But yeah it seems like a huge miss by not putting this in theaters.

This whole "should be in the theaters" thing is getting tiresome to hear, same with the Batgirl fiasco.
Streaming is the new way. Think of how many films became big only after releasing on VHS and later DVD.
I've only been going to the theater in recent years for new Star Wars movies, but now the good stuff is on DIsney+ and I'm quite okay with that.
