As you say, 3 years ago was a different time. I imagine that some of the success of Badlands is due to the goodwill built up by Prey. The franchise was kind of d.o.a. when Prey was released. Not to mention no "predator" in the title. I still think it should have been theatrical, but I don't think you can assume it would have done huge business just because Badlands has.

Which they continued to miss by not putting it in theaters sometime in the last few weeks . . .

I would have loved a double feature on the big screen.
