Don't forget Ghoulies!

Really don't see The Gate as part of that genre.

Don't be Afraid of the Dark (1973) fucked me up way before Gremlins did when it came to creepy little creatures.

Gremlins in 1984. Then you have Ghoulies and Critters, for which the rip-off factor is up to debate. And Munchies is a clear rip-off of Gremlins. And four franchises do not constitute a genre.

The Gate is an entirely different thing altogether. The monsters were demons, and they were not necessarily small creatures, as they could possess bodies.

The Puppet Master films fall under the category of possessed toys. Other such films include the Chucky films, Dolls (1987), and Annabelle. And that's not a genre either.

If it weren't for Gremlins, we wouldn't have had Mulholland Drive.

Ghoulies and Critters were both conceived before Gremlins came out actually.

Ghoulies was filmed right before Gremlins came out in the spring of 1984, and Critters was conceived back around 1981.

And Gremlins was conceived in 1979-80 as Dark Skies. A semi sequel to Close Encounters that was never made.

The idea of destructive critters that fuck with technology goes back to WWII. There were some loony tunes that depicted them as Gremlins.

Not quite. Night Skies (which has its own Wikipedia page: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Night_Skies ) was the unproduced film that directly inspired E.T. and Poltergeist. Chris Columbus conceived Gremlins on his own as a student at NYU during this time (1981). If anything, perhaps Gremlins took the concept of one goodnatured member of a species of otherwise meanspirited creatures from Night Skies (since in early drafts of Gremlins, there was no genuinely friendly Mogwai like Gizmo).

Funny, Rick Baker worked on creature effects for Night Skies (so, he was pissed when all his hard work ultimately went to waste). When he was offered to do the effects for Gremlins 2, he dusted off the concept from Night Skies of the creatures having distinct personalities despite belonging to the same race.
