Another Pirates of the Caribbean Movie (S: Margot Robbie)

Margot Robbie is setting sail with help from her Birds of Prey writer Christina Hodson.

Hodson has been tapped to write a new, female-fronted Pirates of the Caribbean for Disney, with Robbie attached to star.

While plot details are being kept in Davey Jonesí locker, the project, in early development, is not intended to be a spinoff of the long-running franchise that had pirate Jack Sparrow at its center, but rather a wholly original story with new characters under the Pirates moniker, itself inspired by the long-running attraction at Disneyland.

The new project is said to be separate from the already announced reboot of the popular franchise that has Pirates scribe Ted Elliott and Chernobyl creator Craig Mazin developing the story.

Longtime Pirates producer Jerry Bruckheimer is attached to produce both the Elliott/Mazin project and this new Robbie/Hodson project.

Re: Another Pirates of the Caribbean Movie (S: Margot Robbie)

So two concurrent but separate Pirates of the Caribbean franchises?

I guess it'll add some content to watch on Disney Plus in a few years...

I'm guessing Margot Robbie will look very nice in a low-cut pirate's blouse.

I'm down, but Robbie isn't a boxoffice draw. I mean, if they make it for 50 million cool, but if they spend 200 million on it like a Depp one then it will make Cuthroat Island look like a picnic.

I have no idea what this means.

It seems like they throw around terms like "spin-off" and "reboot" randomly.

Is the Margot Robbie movie not in the same continuity of the previous five films, then? They said it isn't a spin-off, which it would seem to be if it was in the same continuity as the five Depp films, no?

And then there's the "reboot," which makes it sound like they're going to start the franchise over from scratch. Or do they just mean they're reworking the existing continuity without Jack Sparrow? A reboot would imply that they're going to cast someone new as Jack Sparrow and completely restart the franchise, wouldn't it.

At any rate, I think they might be getting ahead of themselves. I think the appeal of the franchise is tied to Johnny Depp, and it's going to be difficult to get audiences to accept films that don't feature him. If they want to keep the series going without Depp, they should do one more film with Depp and the new lead to pass the torch, which I think might be the best shot at getting audiences to accept the series without Depp. Have Jack retire to an island somewhere after an adventure with Karen Gillan (or whoever), and then hand the Black Pearl over to her.

Or maybe start a prequel series with a twenty year-old actor playing young Jack Sparrow.

I dunno. I think it's going to be tricky to pull this off. They've had diminishing returns with later films, both critically and financially, that I don't think they can rock the boat too much.

Re: Another Pirates of the Caribbean Movie (S: Margot Robbie)

Iím down. Iíve been ready for them to replace Depp for two movies now.

Although, after watching Ready or Not Iíd prefer Samara Weaving star in the reboot.

So are there two new reboots in the works? Is the other one with Karen Gillan or was that just fan wishlist casting that I kept seeing pop up around the interwebs?

Yeah, apparently there's a Pirates of the Caribbean 6 in the works that's being referred to as a "reboot" that is separate from the Robbie movie they just announced. Karen Gillan, Emma Watson, and Daisy Ridley are rumored to be up for the lead according to several trade articles.

I did mention a while back that I thought Karen Gillan would make a good lead in the POTC franchise playing Anne Bonny, who was a real-life pirate.

I could see either Gillan or Ridley taking up the mantle; they're both kind of spunky and already connected with Disney. Watson seems a little too posh to play a pirate. I can't really see Hermione swinging from ropes and engaging in sword fights.

Why not just make it a triple bill? Make all three leads. That would be amazing.

Emma Watson could be the governorís wife trying to deal with the pirates but getting roped into an adventure.

I donít know, man. Having all three leads could result in the story being somewhat convoluted and giving the movie a bloated run time. I donít think the honchos at Disney would allow that to happen to one of their PoTC movies.

Pirates had Depp, Bloom and Knightly. It's not like they need to be three Jack Sparrows, just three lead roles.

Re: Another Pirates of the Caribbean Movie (S: Margot Robbie)

It's funny, I've been hoping that the movies would have far less focus on Depp as they went on, but now I'm finding I'm not particularly interested in a PotC without him at all. I hope whatever they come up with can capture the fun I had with the first movie in the series.

I probably should have put the sarcasm or wink emoji in my post.

Re: Another Pirates of the Caribbean Movie (S: Margot Robbie)

Part of a larger article:
Disney had already backed away from a Pirates future with Depp well before the U.K. trial, even if it never formally severed ties. Bruckheimer, who has been one of Depp's biggest champions and once suggested the finger injury happened because "he got it caught in a car door," was hoping to at least bring the Captain Jack Sparrow character back briefly in the next outing — said to be a female-centric incarnation fronted by Margot Robbie. Disney balked.

Insiders say Depp's relationship with Bruckheimer has frayed in recent months.

Re: Another Pirates of the Caribbean Movie (S: Margot Robbie)

I like the idea of a Pirates Universe. I donít think Depp needs to be involved in any of the new movies. Capt. Jack Sparrow could just be referenced as being a notorious pirate somewhere out in the Caribbean without actually bringing him in for the audience to see.

Heck, if these new movies are a success then they can triumphantly bring Depp back for a movie later in the series. That would give it a little more time for his personal life stuff to calm down.

I'm really past having any more "universes", especially one coming from Disney.
