Untitled Tom Cruise Film shot in space (D: Doug Liman)

EXCLUSIVE: I’m hearing that Tom Cruise and Elon Musk’s Space X are working on a project with NASA that would be the first narrative feature film – an action adventure – to be shot in outer space. It’s not a Mission: Impossible film and no studio is in the mix at this stage but look for more news as I get it. But this is real, albeit in the early stages of liftoff.

Mission: Impossible Fallout took a break, literally when he broke his ankle in a leap from one rooftop to the other and he also hung from a helicopter; he hung from the side of a jet plane during takeoff in Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation, and in Mission: Impossible: Ghost Protocol he scaled the Burj Khalifa, the Dubai skyscraper, and executed stunts 123 floors up. He is meticulous in preparing these stunts he does, which are frightening just to watch.

There has never been a leading man (Jackie Chan might dispute this) who puts himself at risk as often as does Cruise, in the name of the most realistic action sequences possible. If he is successful shooting a project in Musk’s space ship, he will be alone in the Hollywood record books. Stay tuned.

Dunno how or why or whatever but if Tom Cruise says wacky stuff like actually going into outer space to film a movie i believe him because hes crazy enough to do stunts in his Mission Impossible movies

Kind of worried if he'll come back from outer space since hes with Elon Musk or whatever his name is.

Wasnt it rumors a couple of months ago Elon Musk was talkin crazy talk about going to Mars for the rest of his life?

On the surface it sounds like a good idea but I have to wonder how well it’ll really work out if it even happens. Plus I’m sure it would add major costs to the film’s budget.

I can’t see this happening ever. He’ll have to be trained as a real astronaut, no? The avg. age is 34. He’s 57, I think. C’mon. If Elon Musk hasn’t been to outer space yet (even though his ship and stuff), no way Cruise does this. No way.

re: Untitled Tom Cruise Film shot in space (D: Doug Liman)

Cruise and the entire film crew (I’m assuming that would be insanely small) would have to be on the ISS for 6 months. Unless they launch a shuttle specifically to pick them up. That would only add $450 million to the films budget.

That’s not including the added calculations for food, water, living space, waste storage, etc. for adding an additional handful of people onto the ISS. There are a lot of things that would need to be worked out, to say the least.

I’m not sure I see this happening anytime soon.

As impressed as I am with Cruise’s stunts in his films, they have a tendency to lean to publicity stunt with a lot of his stuff. More hype than anything else. This reeks of the same thing.

I would put some money on him following through on this. Cruise seems pretty relentlessly committed to topping himself.

Phfff! Six months on a space station would be nothing to Cruise after suspending his career for over a year to shoot Eyes Wide Shut.

I'm not surprised this is something Cruise is considering doing, and fully believe it will happen.

Yeah, and really when he’s thinking of pulling something like this it gets absurd. I get that he wants to be a daredevil and do all these stunts and top himself, but going into space to film is to the point where it’s ridiculous. I mean that isn’t just something that you decide to do. You have to train for it, and on top of that it probably wouldn’t just be him but at least a small crew to help on board. Plus there’s the logistical aspect of figuring out how to film in space. It just seems like a lot more work than it probably will end up being worth for what boils down to a publicity stunt. I like Cruise but just think it’s silly if he’s really considering this.

Well, he's a scientologist, so if anything should go wrong he'd know he was the only one who could really help.

People need to get over the age thing. Taking care of yourself adds many years to your life and you don't even need to be a health nut.

I believe Cruise is more than capable of being trained - BUT I hear you, astronaut training is no damn joke and I don't see how you can half-ass something like that.

On the surface to me it sounds dumb as hell. What would the point be? Other than being the first to do it.

I wonder how much training Cruise had for Top Gun 2? Based on the trailers, it looks like he was really involved in some of the pilot maneuvers. I’m guessing he was involved in some type of pilot training to teach him how to handle the G-Forces.

For all we know, with the Top Gun training, he may be halfway to being an astronaut already.

I should restate what I said. On the surface it sounds cool. When you really think about the logistics of it though, I agree that it’s dumb as hell if he actually tries going through with it.

Well, John Glenn went to space when he was 77. Granted, he was a trained astronaut, but I don't think Cruise passing the proper physicals will be an issue.

Even if you believe that Tom Cruise could do it. To actually film a movie probably you'd need to have dozens of others to go with him. If 2001 can be filmed on Earth that's good enough.
