Thanks to this thread, I decided to re-visit the film on Blu-Ray this evening.
Still an enjoyable film with fantastic FX work from Jim Henson's Creature Shop. As mentioned in pages previous, it still blows my mind how much movement the actors got out of the Turtle Suits, considering how they were built.
With that said, I'm still not a fan of how the Shredder was visually translated to film.
I agree, the tone in this film is solid.
There's enough goofiness for the audience that wanted a live-action version of the 1987 Animated Series but also enough grit for those who appreciated the source material.

It’s one of the earlier films based on a comic book property to take the source material seriously. Also when you consider it came out at a time when the cartoon series was at the peak of its popularity doing a film that was more gritty in tone probably was somewhat risky at the time. That probably is also partially why the following films became more kid friendly.

I loved the original Eastman/Laird comics back in the 80s. I had a few issues that are long gone and probably would have paid for my graduate school tuition. The cartoon came on by the time I was in college, it was enjoyable for what it was but firmly aimed at the kiddies. That said, I loved the movie at the time. While still very kiddie-based (too many cues from the cartoon) it had a great look and of course the Turtles themselves looked fantastic.
I always got a giggle out of Shredder the rat mimicking his master's moves in the cage. It looked absolutely ridiculous but so charming.
I tried rewatching it a few years ago and it didn't hold up at all. I think I made it about 15 minutes in before I gave up on it. Never saw any of the sequels.
What I'd give to see a black-and-white, indie comic-stylized animated movie taken straight from the pages of the original comic.

I loved this movie as a kid, and liked the second one, just not as much. I can't recall the third one at all. My kids love both the first one and the second one, don't think they've seen the third one. In fact, I asked them what movie they wanted to watch for family movie night last week, and they chose the first one, asking if we could watch the second one this week.
