That means no real movies have resumed shooting yet.

With Spider-Man opening in December, it needs to be called "Spider-Man: Home for Christmas".

I saw The Karate Kid last night in theaters and asked the workers there if they knew they would be showing Bill and Ted and New Mutants. They weren't sure about Bill and Ted but said New Mutants definitely will if it is released on time.

Mulan will be a $30 premium video on demand rental for Disney plus subscribers only. It will also play in some theatres that are open.

Who knew Disney execs were lurking on the board!

Wow. Can't imagine many will be excited to pay $30 in addition to their Disney Plus subscription. Doing it this way (as opposed to through VUDU, Apple, Amazon), though, we will never be able to see how many purchases were made, right?

Only a low level exec though. Only the high level execs would have thought to charge 30 bucks on top of a + subscription.

Yeah since Disney is cutting out the middle man, these sales figures probably won't be made public unless Disney chooses to release them.

And yes most of the complaints online I've seen said the same thing. They think it's unfair that they already have a paid subscription to Disney + and you're putting on there, but want a $30 fee in addition to watch Mulan and you can't even own it.

I'm still curious what happens to New Mutants. They can't do this Disney + route because of the Fox licensing deal with HBO.

Exactly. Disney is probably going to dump it in whatever 300-400 theatres that are open in middle America, give it a small international release and just say they fulfilled their theatrical release commitment, release it on digital for $20, then BD and then it segues to HBO 6 months later.

They can't sit on this one any longer. It's had way too many delays.

Re: COVID-19 Virus -- Movie related news

I posted this in the Mulan thread as well. Here's an update.

You pay the $30 and the movie will stay on your subscription as long as you remain a member. And you can watch it as many times as you want. It's basically "unlocking" it earlier.

If you have a Regal that's opening up, here's what you will be able to see among their classic titles

I wonder if this is going to be the first salvo in "premium" streaming content.

So you're already paying $6.99 a month for a subscription, then, if you want to watch a new release movie, you're going to have to pay an extra $10-$20-$30 for it, sort of like paying for a DVD or blu-ray. Or pay an extra $5.99 to be able to watch The Mandalorian Season 3 before it becomes a catalog title three, six, or twelve months later.

I doubt it. This is a desperate attempt to recoup some of what the theatrical run would've earned. It only make sense for something originally budgeted for theatrical, but now going only streaming.

Something like The Mandelorian is specifically planned and budgeted for Disney+, as a way to encourage new subscribers and maintain existing subscribers. What they would gain from increased rent-seeking would likely be offset by people opting to drop their subscriptions.

Now, if theaters don't ever come back, this may become a new model. Or, if this is a success, maybe they'd consider putting theatrical films up on the service for a fee shortly after theatrical release, like while it's still playing in theaters. But they're not going to convert their normal Disney+ offerings to this, and something that's ended its theatrical run and waiting for a normal home video release isn't going to be an attractive option either.

We don't know, so this is wild speculation, but I could easily see them lengthening the delay between theatrical/rental release and a movie coming to Disney +. This gives a larger rental window and increases the perceived value of the rental.

Re: COVID-19 Virus -- Movie related news

Regal just released this welcome back video for Friday August 21st.

However, this will vary depending on where you live.

So their bestselling movie will look like a three-week old rom-com's Sunday matinee audience. And it'll be a movie that everyone in the theater can watch at home instead.

Ok, good luck Regal!

ONE movie that might actually look good on a native 1.85 screen.

Just saw this tidbit. AMC is celebrating 100 years and is reopening select theaters here on Aug 20th. Opening day ticket price will be like in 1920... 15 cents.
