No Mulan is supposed to be a worldwide release. No release in China. It's going to be postponed again any day now.

At this point Mulan should just go to Disney+ - it would drive more subscriptions for them post-Hamilton and it doesn't have a prayer of coming out this year in theaters.

To what end though? They have their subscriber base, they will have Mandalorian S2 coming out in a couple of months. They'd be better off sitting on this until next Spring and then releasing it in theaters. It will still come to D+ eventually.

Not if they can make more money on new subscribers than they would at the box office. No guarantees that they'd make money next spring (especially if theaters still aren't open and/or major chains have gone out of business). Releasing to Disney+ raises the whole network and could keep "Hamilton" subscribers who might be ready to drop it after a month.

Re: COVID-19 Virus -- Movie related news

Mulan cost roughly $200M to make and probably another $100M in marketing. It's going to be $300M plus in losses if they release it on Disney +

Sure you can try to sell it as a PVOD rental at $20-25. But, it's still going to lose massive money.

That's not money you can simply write off and just forget about. Those kinds of losses cost jobs. It's a tough call. It's easy for someone being a casual observer from afar and not really care that much and say it's not my problem because I have no stake in it. But, stuff like this has a ripple effect on the entire industry. Directors, Writers, and performers are going to lose opportunities to make more movies like this because of the financial ripple effect.

Well sure, but if it goes into a theater that can only hold 1/3 of the people it normally would, they aren't making money there either. At least Disney+ drives subscriptions and they keep getting money off it month-to-month.

I think they are much better off taking their chances at a theater auditorium operating at 30-50% capacity playing Mulan on 4 or 5 screens 7 days per week at $10-15 per head than just dumping it right now on Disney + for their $6.99 monthly fee and then risk the person dropping it after only 1 month. There's thousands of theaters, multiple chains and the movie can play from morning all the way to midnight. And then you can factor in Asia, Europe etc for the theaters in those regions that are open.

Anything can happen and obviously Disney's hands are tied right now because they are at the mercy of the local governments of all these states. If Mulan could just break even with having some kind of theatrical run, I think that would be considered a success considering the times and troubles we're in. Then when it's completely exhausted that, then sure it can segue to Disney + for those who aren't ready to venture to a theater.

Look Unhinged starring Russell Crowe was suppose to come out this month as well, but got pushed back. it's a relatively low budget movie, but the studio behind it wants it to get a theatrical run and is not dumping it on PVOD. From what I understand, it's already opened in Germany.

I think it's getting money now vs. money later. They have real-world numbers of how Disney+ is doing. No one ones how the theater scene is going to go. I would lean toward making money now vs. waiting in limbo for the potential of money a year from now.

You’re presuming that the movie is good and that tons of people are fired up to see it. This is no Hamilton.

And cutting the songs will probably prove to have been a bad idea.

I think D+ is close to max saturation already. They are at 55M subscribers. If folks didn't sign up for the pre-launch discounts, didn't sign up for the big launch, didn't sign up for The Mandalorian, didn't sign up for Hamilton, they are unlikely to be swayed by a live action Mulan without any big names.

Eh, we'll see. I'm far more interested in it without the songs (and I like the songs).

I still think they have the potential to make more money with added subscriptions (and people not canceling) than they will clear at a massively reduced box office.

AMC has delayed their reopening to sometime in August.

Regal also announced yesterday their reopening is delayed.

I got an email from Harkins theatres and they have no date set for reopening. Harkins is a really small family run franchise.

The Star Wars and Avatar movies are also delayed by a year by Disney.

Didn’t need any more info or movie release date changes to make that conclusion. Hey, at least next year will be, well what this summer would have been.

Man, I've got $150 in Regal Gift cards that I got back in February by using my Discover card reward points. Hopefully there will be a Regal to go back to one day.

Why on earth would they open here in September? What possible theater capacity would we have by then. 25% at best?

Gerry Butler movies make most of their money in Europe/Overseas.

If only 20-25% of U.S. theaters are open in September, I'm sure STX will be fine with that.

That's probably true. And it'll be on every single screen multiple times a day
