I wonder if movie theaters could maybe employ some sort of "sparse seating" arrangement. Block off alternate rows, and make sure there's always one empty seat between strangers in the same row (couples/families/groups could sit right next to each other). In between screenings, the staff scrub down the seats that were just in use, then switch the rows that were blocked off, so the next screening people are sitting in seat nobody has sat in for at least two hours (or whatever length the movie is).
Also, maybe take people's temperatures as they come in, and check for coughing and sneezing.
Theaters with reserved seating could alter their systems to incorporate this sparser seating. Those without reserved seating could maybe assign seats as people arrive.
Theaters may be reluctant to reduce their theater capacity to a max of 40% full, but with no promise that the theater won't be completely full of people, people might just avoid going, so that screening are only 10% full. If people know precautions are being taken and they won't be sitting side-by-side with strangers, they may be more willing to come out.

One of the locally owned theaters just announced they are limiting each of their auditoriums to 1/3 capacity.
And next week they are closing 40% of their auditoriums. Although sounds like this was planned for renovations.
They have 14 screens, but it's at the beach and I doubt it's that crowded this time of the year anyway.

Our county just issued a 250 person limit on any event ... not sure how that translates to theaters with separated auditoriums, malls, etc.
Theaters are going to be forced to close with no product. There is absolute shit out right now, they couldn’t survive for two to three weeks on this sparse of a selection.

Considering there isn’t a major release for the next month now, the theatres are going to be at limited capacity regardless.

It looks like movie theaters are voluntarily capping all showings to 50% capacity to allow for space. It doesn't sound like they're deliberately orchestrating the space. They seem to be hoping that people will voluntarily space themselves out, instead of all huddling in the middle seasts. Then there's this:

It’s also worth noting, for those considering venturing out, that reserved-seat theaters offer the opportunity to choose a seat away from others...

Start coughing and see how fast they move to a different seat. Remember the scene in THE STAND when Stu is being held prisoner in the government facility. Some guards come for him and he does a fake cough and the guards back up real fucking quick.

I bought a ticket to the Fathom Events screening of Braveheart on March 22nd about two weeks ago. I just hope it doesn't get cancelled.

Well, then there's the possibility that they get up and leave... to go find an usher and tell them someone obviously unwell is in their theater. Or maybe someone else in the theater would. So then you have to leave, and they get the seat.

No. If an usher shows up you deny it and accuse the other guy of making it up so he can have a seat alone.
