AMC is not happy. They're basically refusing to screen Universal movies in their chain.

Welp, I had AMC on my shortlist of potential stocks after all this but apparently the CEO is a toddler. No avoiding that upcoming AMCQ ticker.

Will they no longer show WB films as well? I can't imagine Scoob being much less of an anticipated theatrical release than Trolls 2.

Re: COVID-19 Virus -- Movie related news
The issue is Universal said they will continue to do VOD in the same day as theatrical when theatres reopen. That isn’t something WB has said they would do.

Jeff Shell, the CEO of Universal, made some comments in the WSJ gloating about Trolls and it’s PVOD financials and that’s what really pissed off AMC.
The math for it’s attributed success doesn’t really add up though. Someone did the numbers.

They spent a shit load on marketing for the first. They didn’t this time. I assume they were also talking domestically. If you factor worldwide, it’s another story.

A good CEO goes a long way, and they've shown sparks of forward thinking. But they seem to be repeatedly shooting themselves in the foot.

Oh. That is different. I kind of am with the theater owners. They can't stay in business if every major theatrical release goes VOD. I share that concern.

Trolls 2 hasn't been released internationally yet, not fully, it's actually going to theaters in South Korea soon.
But yeah, insiders say Trolls 2 ad budget was maybe $30m, which is a fraction of Trolls 1. They also kept 80% of the profit instead (current ~ $77m) of the 50% share they got from Trolls in theaters (~ $76m).
Universal's comment suggested they'd continue playing with PVOD and theatrical releases (later clarified only on some releases.) The knee jerk reaction by AMC from a very vague overall comment was just odd, it should be a release-by-release thing like it is now, not a blanket statement.
Like a theater chain in S. Korea isnt allowing Trolls 2 to show since its same day PVOD there too, that makes sense. Saying they're also going to block Fast n Furious movies would be silly.

I think you completely missed the point and are ignoring the fact that, at least early on during the crisis, there were people congregating in church and completely ignoring the distancing rules...Keep going on though, it's fine...

Out of all the tens of thousands of churches out of the entire country there were only a few crackpot churches that defiantly held services. And at least one pastor was arrested for it.

Looks like Universal also lost Regal as an exhibitor as well.

Their comment was better than AMCs. AMC said, angrily, that they won't carry Universal movies. Cineworld basically said if the movies are available same day on demand they won't be shown in their theaters, which is what they already do.

John Campea and Robert Meyer Burnett did the math. They think as of right now, Trolls World Tour is about $53M in the red.
Campea used to work for AMC theatres and Collider video and knows the theatre business. They make good points.

Universal would be silly to think that this would be the norm. Release a movie geared toward adults and see how many pay $20 for it, it'd be much lower.
I couldn't listen to Campea for the full thing, his CNBC style shout talking is horrible. But looking at it yeah, nobody said they were currently profitable, just that they made more from the $95m domestic PVOD than they did for Trolls 1 domestic $150m take in theaters. The other guy touched on that.

I just mentioned that in the dedicated thread -- I thing King of Staten Island is next. Also, they did release The Invisible Man, The Hunt, etc., but don't remember if they ever released those stats. I know Trolls' stats were released because it was 100 million dollars, but don't remember what the others made on VOD.

They're more tight liipped about the other ones. But the studios did get a treasure trove of data from the March VOD experiments.

Who could have imagined that there would be a huge shitstorm around Trolls World Tour that would end up tearing Hollywood and theater chains apart?

A handful of movie theaters in San Antonio and Austin, Texas, are set to reopen in the coming days, providing an early test case for coronavirus protection measures.
EVO Entertainment plans to open two theaters on Monday using “airport security-style check-in,” says CEO Mitchell Roberts. Guests will enter a cordoned area near the front door, where they will be asked if they are anyone in their household have had flu symptoms in the last 14 days. They will also be subjected to an infrared temperature screening, with anyone over 100.4 degrees turned away.
“I feel like it’s really important for our guests to come in and see what we’re doing to protect them,” Roberts says. “The focus is on earning that customer confidence back.”
Texas Gov. Greg Abbott allowed theaters to reopen beginning on Friday at 25% capacity, as several states around the country have loosened their coronavirus restrictions. Despite that, the vast majority of theaters in Texas and elsewhere — including all the major chains — have remained closed, citing the lack of new movies to show and the challenges of providing a safe experience.
