This will be headed to premium video on demand on September 8th. No theatrical release.

These lower budget movies can probably afford to skip theatres. I mean realistically this movie was barely on anyone's radar. It would not have done well in a theatrical release.

For casual movie-goers, the appeal of this film was in the advertising, believing that this was Jordan Peele's newest film.

Itís a good concept. Time travel back and find yourself a slave. And itís making a parallel that we may be slaves in our current lives as well.

I wonder whatís bad about it.

A couple of reviews I've read noted that . . .
Spoiler:
there is no time travel in the film.

(probably a HUGE spoiler, but it can sorta be deduced from the trailers. Sorta)

I just listened to a short review on NPR and it sounds like she’s unstuck in time. Living two parallel lives. Possibly mental divergent like 12 Monkeys.

Possible, but that sounds awfully science fiction-y for a movie built around the topic of slavery. I wonder if NPR was using a bit of misdirection to keep the real twist a secret. Again, more than one mainstream print review (that I regretted reading in full, although both did warn me) described it as, well . . .
Spoiler:
very much set entirely in the present day.

Donít want to be more specific than that, lest I draw fire for ruining anyoneís evening! Had I been able to go in cold (not now, i guess), I think they probably wouldíve tricked me good.

That doesn’t ruin anything. It could be argued that 12 Monkeys happens entirely in the then present 1995. There’s multiple ways of looking at it.

I may have been too soft with my spoilers above.
Major MAJOR spoiler (again, to me, this was evident in the trailers, but I suppose it was just a lucky guess):
Spoiler:
The plantation is essentially a well-hidden amusement park for modern-day racists who play dress-up and abduct "slaves" from the outside world, then abuse, rape, kill them, etc. as if it were the old south. There's no equivocation a la 12 MONKEYS or things like that.

Interestingly, I was reading an interesting negative review/rant – by a black critic – on Vulture and a huge number of the commentators ('triggered' types on both sides, not surprisingly) clearly haven't seen the film before weighing in most assuredly about what it is or isn't, with most taking the position that it's science fiction film, which I guess means the trailers (and thankful lack of spoilery reviews) certainly can be interpreted that way. The film itself, well . . .

I haven’t got around to watching this yet, but I might bite now that the rental price has dropped to $12.99.

I watched it, was okay. All I will say is, the twist reminded me of

Re: Antebellum (2020. D: Bush+Renz) - S: Janelle MonŠe

This finally made it's way to Red Box and I rented it last night. I know the buzz on this movie has been at best "It's okay" But, I actually thought it was pretty compelling.

From the trailers, I thought it was a drama covering 2 different time periods.

I didn't expect the big twist that:
Spoiler:
Monae's character was actually from present day and was actually kidnapped by a group of racists and imprisoned on a Civil War reenactment park. Others are also imprisoned with her as well.

It's basically a movie with an underlying message about systemic racism. There's a 1 hour documentary on the BD that goes more in depth into the movie, but I didn't have time to watch it.

I'd give this a B- I got enough out of it where I was kept engaged and wasn't bored.

I thought the story was pretty interesting, and I’m glad I hadn’t read any spoilers beforehand. I was actually surprised that I was having some “Fuck yeah!” emotional reactions to some of the action.

The people who are arguing about what genre it is should probably just watch the movie.

I watched this last week. Some gorgeous cinematography in the opening sequence. And Janelle MonŠe is stunning.
Beyond that... eh. It was OK. Worth the rental. I think they thought they were being more clever than the film actually turned out.

Re: Antebellum (2020. D: Bush+Renz) - S: Janelle MonŠe

I watched the bonus material and found it interesting. I rarely seek out bonus stuff these days, but I’ll often watch it when available. A lot of it was of the “look how authentic we were for hiring so-and-so” variety, but it did add insight to the making of the movie.

I thought about rewatching the movie before returning the rental just to see how it might unfold differently for me, but a lot of it was just unpleasant so I decided to skip it.
