Memory (2022, D: Martin Campbell) S: Liam Neeson, Guy Pearce, Monica Bellucci
Liam Neeson is set to star in the action crime thriller “Memory” to be directed by the U.K.’s Martin Campbell (“Casino Royale,” “Goldeneye”). STX International is handling the international sales rights and will unveil the project at the Berlin Film Festival’s European Film Market.
“Memory” follows Neeson as an expert assassin who himself becomes a target when he refuses to complete a job for a dangerous criminal organization. The FBI is also on his tail, forcing the assassin to call on his exceptional skills to stay one step ahead.
The script is written by Dario Scardapane (“The Bridge,” Netflix’s “The Punisher”) and adapted from Dutch film “The Memory of a Killer.” Production begins in August.
CAA Media Finance, which arranged financing for the film, will represent its North American domestic distribution rights. STX will distribute the film directly in the U.K. and Ireland.
Academy Award-winning producer Cathy Schulman (“Crash”) will produce through her Welle Entertainment banner. Rupert Maconick and Arthur Sarkissian also produce. Black Bear Pictures’ Teddy Schwarzman (“The Imitation Game”), Michael Heimler (“I Carry You With Me”) and Ben Stillman (“Gold”) will executive produce. Black Bear Pictures will fully finance.
“Memory” is a reunion of sorts for STX International, Campbell, Schulman and Sarkissian. They were all previously involved in the action hit “The Foreigner,” which starred Jackie Chan and Pierce Brosnan, and which made over $145 million worldwide.
“Memory is an exceptional high-concept script, and we could not be more excited to have Liam on board to star,” said John Friedberg, president of STX International. “Martin (Campbell) is a true expert in elevating the genre, and will make an explosive version of this compelling and pulse-racing story.”

I suspect the Dutch version will remain the superior version. There is a plot point/character trait in the Dutch version that is completely omitted from the synopsis above, and it won't be the same film without it (assuming this version jettisons it altogether instead of making it a surprise).

Wow, another new Neeson movie already? I did see Blacklight and I wasn't crazy about it. Very forgettable. At least this one has Martin Campbell directing it.

At nearly 70 years old, one wonders how many Taken clones Neeson has left in him. 😳🤕

I just got back from seeing it. I actually thought it was decent. It's one of Neeson's better recent mid-budget movies. This movie is more of a thriller than it is an action movie. There really isn't that much action in it. And I didn't realize until I got my ticket that this is actually an R rated movie. There is some bloody violence that involves throats getting slashed and it deals with sex trafficking of minors.
Neeson is the lead for the 1st half of the movie, but he's relegated to a supporting role in the 2nd half and Guy Pearce becomes the lead in the 2nd half of the movie.
I thought his last movie Blacklight was awful and so by the numbers. It was just another dumb watered down Taken knockoff. This one had some interesting character dynamics and Neeson was probably his most vulnerable here. I won't go into details of it.
Overall, I'd give this maybe a 7 out of 10 and maybe a generous B-. I liked that it was "different" enough from his recent output.

I didn't think it was "good", but with Campbell directing it was at least competently made which puts ahead of most of Neeson's recent output.
Ray Stevenson has kind of let himself go.

Could this finally put the nail in the coffin for Neeson action flicks?
Then again he will do Taken 4 and go right back to the top of the box office.

This was a pasable way to spend 2 hours. It's certainly a more ambitious screenplay than some of Neeson's recent outings. Lots of ideas thrown out there, but none of it really comes together the way you'd hope. Monica Bellucci's character suffers the most. She and her brood are the villains, but they never really comes off as such. We hear a lot about the terrible things they've done, but never see much of it. Not that I wanted to see some of the things they got up to, but there just wasn't much in the way of menace.
I don't begrudge Neeson for cranking these out. I wish there was more variety, but if no one else is going to make these sorts of throwback action/thrillers, then I'll accept Neeson for as long as he can do it. That said, this one felt like it should be the end. Not just because he looks old, but thematically it felt like closure. Just wish it had been a bit better.
